Which are your most useful ships Allied and Japanese in the first wekk of the war 12-7-41 to 12-14-41????

Allied would be the AUS CL Aledaide she has turned back several landings alone.

Japanese would have to be the IJN CVL Ryujo on turn one if you can get her near Jolo she can really cut off alot of escapes from the PI.

What are some of your opinions I am curious.

IMO the best ships at the start of the game are the subs....if i was the Japanese player i would hammer Manila's port first turn and destroy these rather than Clark Field.

I'm fond of Force Z removed to the NEI. There the Japanese have no torpedo bombers or air cover in range as comporable to that in Indochina (until they have captured bases in Mindanao or the NEI itself). It's easy to intercept a Japanese invasion force in the Tarakan-Menado-Davao-Amboina area in the first week or two of war. Plus, Prince of Wales has a fantastic AA value - compare Nagato's 384 to Prince of Wales' 1000+.

Good reaction ships and they work well keeping the Japanese on their toes. You can't cover everywhere!

For the Japanese, I suppose the most "useful" would be the Kido Butai - I am a big fan of the "SINK EVERYTHING YOU SEE" way of carrier warfare.

Whilst I agree about Force Z, I am a big fan of USS Boise - she has given Japanese opponents severe headaches in the past, she eats Fubuki class DD's for breakfast[;)]

As a Japanese player, my worst opponent as an individual ship is the PoW. Seeing it sail on day first to S DEI is really bad news.

Allied submarines sink more ships but that is more an attrition battle and won't repulse invasions. While Force Z may win naval battles and trash convoys in December 1941.

POW and Repulse are far more of a treath than the slow lumbering obsolete US BB's at pearl harbour. One of the first things i usually do is wreck havoc on anything in the DEI, or it least scare them off so i have total control of the sea.

as for the japs, quite easily the KB. any place it shows up is doomed. resistance is futile

I think your correct about those two ships.

With the Allies the more useful ships is the British destroyers and APs to transport the troops in the malaya to other site and with the japs is the asw units.

Feinder -> RE: Most useful Ships 12-7-41 (8/16/2005 5:23:22 AM)

Hm.

In my single PBEM game, early game the most useful ships I have are my TRANSPORTS. It sounds trite, but the name of the game for me thus far, has been getting as many troops on the ground, as quickly as possible. There are never enough transports, and the're always moving something. I see posts where folks have 100+ AKs stacked up on the West Coast 1942, and I'm thinking, "Sheesh! How many LCUs or squadrons do you have stacked up at San Francisco or Pearl?! I -know- you can't move divisions without a lot of transports, and I know how busy mine are. That means if yours are just sitting in port, so must your LCUs!"

But it's mid-May at this point, and (pretty much) the only transports of mine that are sitting in port, are doing so for repairs.

I would have to agree with Feinder, As the Allies, my transports are worth more to me than any other ship. Stocking strategic bases with troops and precious fuel/supplies is most important early on. The upgrades and new arrivals outclass the dated warships you begin the campaign with.

Sardaukar -> RE: Most useful Ships 12-7-41 (8/16/2005 3:35:51 PM)

Don't forget that PoW has best AA value in game before South Dakota class arrives. So it may be worth of saving.

Terminus -> RE: Most useful Ships 12-7-41 (8/16/2005 4:05:09 PM)

Yup. Save all of them if you can.

Q-Ball -> RE: Most useful Ships 12-7-41 (8/16/2005 9:57:00 PM)

I also agree with Feinder. Part of the brilliance of WITP is the importance of logistics; in the end, carriers and BB's only exist to protect transports that carry LCU's. Early on as Allies, it's a sin to have any transports doing nothing. They should ALL be moving SOMETHING, even just dropping supplies/troops in Pearl if you can't think of anything else to do. At least there they will be closer to the action when the counter offensive starts.

I find the Allies are short of AP's pretty much the entire war up to maybe 1944, so those are most dear. AK's, you start to get more than you need in mid '43. Early on, I particularly want to save the 2000 Cap Dutch AP's, they are great for invasions until you get LST's.

niceguy2005 -> RE: Most useful Ships 12-7-41 (8/17/2005 1:27:27 AM)

In my gamet (my first full campaign) it was the Adelaide and other CL's. For the first two months the Australian and New Zealand CL's fought off or severely hampered numerous invasions of Rabaul. Consequently, Rabaul is still in allied hands.

For the Japanese the most important ship has been the KB. Whereever it goes the allied offensive comes to a screeching halt.
