(SPWAW 8.4 pre-battle report) June 1943 Italians are fighting on their own land. Operations have gone badly and the frontline has been pushed back. With fresh reinforcements arriving to the field, Colonel Gatto will attempt a counterattack to regain positions lost yesterday to the Brits. Enemy is well dug in and and many brave Italians will fall. Italians are however well prepared to battle, but there are no intelligence reports on the enemy, and the attacker has no experience. Colonel Gatto, a fat commander in his fine suit and ornamented hat with risible rally rating of 29. It will be a long day for the Italians. Italian force 1x Tank Platoon 2x Assault Gun Platoons 1x Battery of 210 howitzers 2x Batteries of 149 howitzers 1x Artillery Battalion with 105mm cannons. 1x Infiltrator Company 1x Engineer Company 3x Infantry Companies 4x 90mm Anti-Aircraft Guns Strategy: - Engineers spearhead the attack and clear the minefields. Artillery will fire all along the Front to keep Brits opporturnity fire down. Infantry will follow the engineers and engage British infantry. Tanks and Assault Guns advance after infantry and attempt to enfilade the enemy while avoiding long range combat with British tanks. Assault Guns have 75mm Guns and they are used to eliminate hard targets. Col. Gatto will attempt to get best shots with them avoiding duel with British tanks. Updated some spelling errors.

Turn 4 (There was a short delay because of Finland-Macedonia soccer match. Finland won 3-0) It's raining and visibility is four. There will be no English aircraft. I should have checked weather before the battle started, for there are no use for my 90mm AA-Guns. Especially as their gun teams reported that they could not carry their guns. 90mm's were too heavy for horse teams. Damn! As for attack I concentrated all my forces to the left side of the front. Infantry follows artillery barrage with 2 hexes per turn speed. Raining makes movement difficult. Oh, yeah I lost two M13's as immobiles to mud. Another was recovered, but I had to redirect my Semoventes to road. I wouldn't have any use of my tanks if they all were immobilised in mud. NO CONTACT WITH THE ENEMY - YET There was heard a British airborne section fleeing after my initial bombings. Brits have lost probably just one man so far. Just looked at my troops, what a bunch! Leaders have command ratings of 30 and less and there seems to be no average troops at all. Even the special forces, arditi are less than average. I sent those arditi to infiltrate behind enemy lines. We shall see will they even turn up for this fight.

Turn 7 Contact with the enemy on turn 4. British paratroops fired at our advancing infantry and forced them to retreat. One brixia team was lost to direct fire. I set artillery to bombard Brits, but first rounds hit our own men inflicting 4 casualties. When fire finally hit the Brits they suffered 2 casualties and suppression. My whole C-Company that is at our centre is engaged and suppressed, but I did not expect anything else from them. Just to engage enemy was their mission. Bravo, soldati! On the left flank our engineers bumbed into bunkers. Cpt. Boccaccio managed to rally his troops to safety. Victory hexes are now open to one of Boccaccio's platoons as bunkers can be passed by. I'll move one of my Semoventes next to one bunker and see how it goes. An English 40mm AA fired at infantry from the hill, I'll order some artillery to bomb that one. It's not too badly so far.

Turn 11 VICTORY HEXES TAKEN! Bravo, signor Alfonso! Molto bene, grazie! Sgt. Alfonso's engineer squad takes first victory hexes. British defense seems to be planned by that same guy who build the bridge over the river Kwai. Col. Nicholson! This is your game! One of my Semovente's blast a British MG bunker, those two with 18pdr Cannons may well be left alone. Bunkers firing sectors are so small that our infantry can just leave them alone. I will move some flamer teams to annoy one of those. Finally my artillery hit the target. The Bofors AA-Gun crew panics and my Line Inf has a easy match. 2ndLt Cesario's Engineer platoon reaches the other victory hexes. The Infantry platoon starts to reach good defensive positions. The one M13 that was stuck in mud is again ready for combat. Some 60% of Victory hexes are now ours! Bravo! Enemy passivity is still a huge surprise to me. So far I have encountered: A Paratroop platoon (with some 6 men lost: 3 for artillery 3 for small arms fire) A 40mm AA-Gun 3x Bunkers Brits should have more forces. I'm currently waiting a British counterattack and that's why my engineers started to build minefields around victory hexes.

Turn 17 Still no British counterattack! I was right. This was Col. Nicholson's game. I have no trouble with British HQ Troops as my Semoventes arrive to take victory hexes. At the same time my arditi appear on the other side of the map and they start to run towards the last remaining victory hexes. My flamer team blast another of Brits' bunker. I don't call this much a fight.

Turn 19 and the battle is over! Decisive victory for the Italians Casualties are for BOTH sides 52 men and 2 artillery. British casualties are actually fewer as I have argued that the report lies on some occasions. True British losses should be some 40 and two bunkers (artillery). British counterattack came, but too late. Time ran up. Brits have there an entire company of paratroops, but I did not attack them. I selected another route and took the hexes. And to General Erich Ludendorff I say: You was wrong. I won the battle and contolled the field without defeating the enemy. Those last shots that the british paratroops shot at my forces clearly cost me more blood, but I had piled my infantry at the victory hexes. They could not have taken them back without considerable losses. As more my arditi arrived on the battlefield I took the last objective. There was found even more bunkers, but I approached them from behind and they were not much harm. The battle is over and it's a Italian decisice victory on offensive. It was pure luck that I selected the left flank and not the right, because all British infantry was posted on the right and I won the scenario without encountering them all.

Nice summary Puukkoo. I was wondering if the lack of the 90s in support was going to hurt you. The AI must have put a ton of points into bunkers instead of tanks so that worked out in your favor. Also, it sounds like your artillery did an admirable job clearing the way. Did you use 152s or mortars. I really like the 152s but sometimes they seem a little to gamey because they are so good.

I had only those brixia mortars. They caught one british paratrooper, but created suppression. Bunkers were a true waste of points because I engaged only 2 bunkers out of six.

Impressive. I am not as adept at using the Brixias as some of the other fellows that run Italians--and I need to address that weakness as there probably is not a more representative Italian weapon than the Brixia mortar. The fact that you were able to use them effectively and not have to rely on the heavier stuff is a good thing tactically. I'm with you on the bunkers. They use up a lot of points and they can be bypassed so easily that it doesn't make much sense to ever use them. And when you have artillery that can fire smoke, bunkers become worse than useless when playing the AI.

I had still a considerable artillery force. 105mm's are very useful even if they don't cause much casualties on fortified enemy. I selected some target hexes for FO's use and one of them was pretty near those British positions. If mission had been advance vs. delay I think the defender had been quicker in reacting. Perhaps I try that next time, for I don't think I got the worst from the Brits. Considering the mistakes I made (the immobile AA-Guns, ignoring the weather raport) makes British showing here even worse.

It was easy to use the brixia, because there was a seat for the crewman.
