I was noticing leaders being auto-assigned who I didn't recall seeing their names in the wph.dat. After editing all of the leaders' attributes to test whether I was imagining this or there was another pool of leaders somewhere, the mystery leaders continued being assigned.

From where are these leaders coming that we do not have in the database?

Could this be a solution to the pilot pool size problem? Rather than add to these pool of 20,000 that we can edit, add another pool of 10-20k for replacement pilots that are not editable (if being able to edit them is the challenge to increasing the pilot pool).

These are in-game random generator leaders.
There is a table of last names, which program will recycle with an initial to generate names to put on fragments/spits and any unit classed as having a "random" leader.

There is room for 25K leaders to be held in the game - 5K for totally random leaders.

The game space for pilots is only 20K both in program and in database file (wpp.dat)
It does generate random names like with leaders but it stores them within the 20K pilot space. When a pilot is killed, his slot is freed up to make available to a random pilot.

I doubt it. The list of names to use with the generator is coded into the program itself, and if the program is going to worked on, there are other areas that need attention.

You could always get a hex editor and hack into the part of the exe that lists the names. [:D]

They are at 1b029ch through 1b509dh but I couldn't tell what the format was. They are names with some 00h between them but they are not uniform.
