Puukkoo -> Scenario with Finns (8/29/2005 2:38:00 PM)

As I have a relatively good chance to produce a historical scenario using Finnish sources, I may do it.

Any suggestions about what battle?

Korpraali V -> RE: Scenario with Finns (8/29/2005 4:56:24 PM)

Taking Suursaari 27.3.1942 in snowtorm?

Puukkoo -> RE: Scenario with Finns (8/29/2005 5:11:44 PM)

Thanks for your suggestion Korpraali V! I have at least some material on that event, a 'Kansa Taisteli' magazine article.

It would be another scenario with Col. Aaro Pajari. Map would be a plain winter map with the island in the middle.

Korpraali V -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/1/2005 5:25:21 AM)

...and in big snowstorm. I have few lines written about it in "G. Mannerheim: Muistelmat, II" (1952, Otava)

And here seems to be very good source (in Finnish):
http://www.rannikonpuolustaja.fi/rp203/suursaa.htm

Puukkoo -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/1/2005 11:54:44 AM)

Thanks for the link, man. I had 'Kansa Taisteli' number 3/77 which had Gen. Pajari's own account of the matter. I also found an article on German amphibious invasion to take that island in September 1944. That would be nice too (and only occasion where Soviets collaborated with Finns, if just with airforce).

I see that the battle is better to produce as three separate pieces, like the TULAGI offensive on scenario roster. It is still possible to make it as one massive package, but the weather changed during the operation and there was later a considerable airforce involvement too.

Korpraali V -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/1/2005 5:55:56 PM)

So what about a small Finnish campaign? I think that would be the first one.

Or even two small campaigns: Fin-Sov and Fin-Ger?

Puukkoo -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/1/2005 6:27:32 PM)

Why not a Finn campaign. About three battles with ski troops.

That German amphibious invasion would work fine just as a scenario. They took only the northern beach head and failed.

As for the Finnish campaigns, The Games Depot has at least that Finn-USSR campaign by some non-Finn. It was fun to play.

Korpraali V -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/1/2005 7:26:22 PM)

Found one but it was reworked to three scenarios.
[:(]

If you choose to make a campaign I'm ready to test it and give some feedback (although I'm rookie in testing stuff).

IBTyrone -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/2/2005 12:07:49 AM)

Do the campaign. Sign me up to help test if you end up doing it. We always need: A) more campaigns, and B) more of the smaller guys to spice things up. That's part of the reason why I play Italians all the time.

Puukkoo -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/2/2005 11:02:26 AM)

Nice to hear that, boys. I will proceed with some further research and planning. There may be some delays due to soccer match Finland-Andorra and ice hockey matches against Russia and Sweden.[;)]

Korpraali V -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/2/2005 2:31:56 PM)

Perfectly understandable situation.

It has been written about going war:

5. And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
6. And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof.
7. And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
8. And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart melt as his heart.

(Deuteronomium 20:5-8)

However, Finnish translation includes ice hockey game against Sweden

(I don't mean to offend, I'm Christian and Finnish myself)

Puukkoo -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/5/2005 1:15:10 PM)

Okay it was just a horrible weekend. I should really have done something else than just watch those games. Humiliating draw against Andorra (0-0) was probably the worst possible show-up in our soccer history. Ice hockey did not fare any better at all. Three games and two goals! Despite these national misfortunes the U21 team and women played much better games. And Räikkönen overcome his ill luck by finishing 4th at Monza after Montoya, Alonso and Fisichella. It seems however probable that Fernando Alonso will claim the title in F1's this year.

Back to our business. I created some kind of map of Suursaari island. -Ugly like falcons behind. Perhaps with some revising it will become much more beautiful to human eye. The idea of assauting an island from frozen sea is something never done before. Using coastal infantry is also something new to me.

Puukkoo -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/18/2005 1:30:38 PM)

Reporting.

I planned the 'Suursaari Island' mini-campaign to consist of four battles. Finn player takes a force of about two companies and some supporting squads.

1x Ski Company
1x Coastal Company
1x Engineer Section
2x Special Forces (Sissi-, Blitz-, or ErP 4 Squads)

Russians have elite forces based on wintry island: Soviet Ski troops and Marines. Finns will not have much points to replace their losses and Soviets will fight fanatically to the last ditch.

Fortunately for the Finns, the aerial supremacy will be achieved before the final battle. Before that, a lot of LaGG's will make life difficult.

There still remains much to do. I had to give up with some historical facts to make campaign more intresting. I Generally try to keep the amount of units relatively small. Despite that, there will be a lot of mortars, light artillery and AA-guns involved.

One possible addition is a 'bonus' mission: a rendez-vous with Germans to capture the 'Daughter Island' before Russians take it.

Korpraali V -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/19/2005 9:51:48 AM)

Sounds good so far.

Not too many LaGGs please... open ice means horrible losses when under machine gun fire. And the sight was very limited at first, if I remember right.

...eagerly waiting...[>:][;)][:D][:D][:D]

Puukkoo -> RE: Scenario with Finns (9/19/2005 11:45:06 AM)

LaGG's will mostly annoy the artillery battery on ice. Brewsters will eventually shoot those down as they did in the real battle.

Puukkoo -> Work completed! (9/24/2005 8:52:41 PM)

I think this one is ready for testing. Volunteers wanted!

It is a campaign with six scenarios. All battles are fought with infantry.

Okay, Puukkoo. I'm your huckleberry. I'm in the midst of working my way through Das Reich for the first time, but if your campaign doesn't involve huge forces, I can work through yours as well.

You can email me the files at my Depot account (IBTYRONE@spwaw.com) or PM me over there. If that doesn't work, we can try some of my other email addys.

Korpraali V -> RE: Work completed! (9/25/2005 6:19:01 AM)

I'm in.

Also with Das Reich near Kharkov...[sm=00000106.gif]
Where are you IBTyrone?

Puukkoo, I sent you my address.

Puukkoo -> RE: Work completed! (9/25/2005 5:51:57 PM)

Okay guys, I sent you both a package. Let's hope it works. Report here if you don't have it yet.

Still in Poland, on the last battle with the forts. This one has been a little bit tougher nut to crack than the others so far. I'm out of smoke and having difficulty kicking in the back door on the upper fort but it seems to be better defended than the front side was. Ugh. It's only turn 10 out of 20 and I have already taken the other two victory hexes in the town and lower fort, so I should be able to get through in 10 turns--I hope.

I have a long ways to go in the campaign, though. How far into the campaign is Kharkov?

I got it Puukkoo. I will have to wait until tomorrow at work to download the file cause all I have is a dialup connection at home and the large download kills it. I'll let you know when I get it installed.

Puukkoo -> RE: Work completed! (9/25/2005 10:41:43 PM)

Sounds good.

I have also played that Das Reich Campaign and currently I am at Kharkow. I remember Poland was rather tough going with all those fortifications. I patiently advanced with infantry all over the front and moved my tanks and the 88mm's to where they were needed. Some direct hits from the tank guns reduced the effectiveness of the Polish fortifications. I used Artillery to suppress the nastiest opponents when they fired at us. (My infantry tactics were perhaps more from the American Civil War than WW2, but it worked). My Spec Ops took the village behind the forts.

IBTyrone -> RE: Work completed! (9/26/2005 2:50:56 AM)

Why are both you guys near Kharkow? Does the scale of battle get huge at that point and things slow down?

I tried to get fancy and flank the forts, but I think your brute force attack up the middle is just as effective in the fort scenario. I'm going to try and finish it now.

Major_Mess -> RE: Work completed! (9/26/2005 3:34:38 AM)

You pegged it IB

I'm (I won't call it stuck) still at Kharkov, about 15 or so turns in on a 60 turn monster. It's all good though, just a little larger than what I'm used to. I chip away at it, a turn or so a week ................ I figure I'm not in a race.
And I like to mull over my moves (ie - I fuss too much about what I'm doing.)

Concerning the Forts.

Smoke 'em big time.
Sneek up then pound them with everything you got before crossing the wire to assault them.

I swung all my armour to the top of the map through the bush and attacked the town behind the second fort in force. Can't remember if I pulled off a DV on that one ...................... probably not.

Major Mess

Korpraali V -> RE: Work completed! (9/26/2005 8:35:56 AM)

There are multiple battles near Kharkov. I've just fought first one. Seems that there are several battles still to come. This is the time my SS-men really need luck and skills, because we are still mostly running with Pz-IIIs and Pz-IVs and the enemy has several T-35s and KV-1s... [:(]

pingggg... pingggg.... pingggg...

Have to get some kats and fast...

I've enjoyed all the fights so far. And used lots of smoke. Although in some scenarios I've found after the battle that some enemy troops headed wrong direction and never took part on the fight.

In this Finnish campaign it looks like we may have virus problem.

Crap. Thanks for the tip, Major. I was afraid of that. 60 turns? I don't think I've ever played a scenario over 35 turns. I'm gonna die.

If it's any consolation, it sounds like you and I did the exact same thing. I was surprised at how well both forts were defended from the rear. I managed to end it in 15 turns (the first time I've had a fight end early) and got the DV. Great map, though, and a good challenge. Those random mines were a pain in the arse!

I know it's early, but I do not look forward to running into Russian armor. I have 5 Pz IVs, but they won't get it done at Kharkov. Do you have any 88s? If so, are they effective in this campaign?

Smoke is my friend. I wish I had something more substantial at generating smoke than the 81s, but they are better than nothing. And they seem to run out of smoke ammo so fast. [;)]

Puukkoo -> RE: Work completed! (9/26/2005 2:51:45 PM)

Well, Korpraali V

I ran a virus-killer and then tried to upload my re-zipped campaign file into hotmail, but it claimed that the zip had a virus. I have been unable to locate this with the Norman Virus Control, but instead they claim that hotmail is more clever than ever. In this case I think they're too clever. I still try to solve this mystery.

Korpraali V -> RE: Work completed! (9/26/2005 3:09:30 PM)

My core force is almost as suggested:

-1 SS Rifle Co
(50mm mortars changed to 81mm's)
-Pz Platoon
-FO
-Ammo carrier (halftrack from Cze OOB)

so no 88's and flame tanks if not in AUX units. 88's are more effective than other guns but even they don't always penetrate KV-1s.

But before KVs and T-34s you have to face French and British armors. They are tough too (Matildas and Chars).

81s are very good when adjanced to Ammo carrier[:)]. I have now changed them to 251/2s (halftracks with mortars). With experience they've got their delaying time is now 0.2. And FO can be carried by Ammo carrier --> fast artillery force [:D]

I forwarded it to my Yahoo account which the Norton scan didn't pick up a virus. Also, you sent it to my spwaw.com email account originally, and I know Bernie has pretty good virus checkers on it because it flagged some of my stuff inadvertantly in the past. Lastly, I sent it to my work account and downloaded it to my computer and ran up to date Sophos on it--which came back clean. So either hotmail is hyperactive in the virus scan, or you don't have a virus.

I did *not* run a spyware detection program on it.
