Dragoon 45 -> Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (8/31/2005 3:44:41 PM)

I recently tried to change the Main Headquarters Unit to a different type unit. I wanted the AO headquarters to be a tank representing the unit commander as mounted in that tank. When I tried to change it in the editor using the "change this unit to a different type unit" function things went crazy. At first the headquarters completely disappeared, and when I finally found it; it had been renumbered something like AR-0. I am guessing that I have probably done something wrong in the process but for the life of me, I can't figure out what. I want to represent the Battalion/Regimental Commander using his command tank instead of a dismounted headquarters. Any one have any ideas or suggestions where I went wrong? Thank you in advance for your responses.

The changing of A0 to different type unit was done many times before. Actually there shouldn´t be a problem, but.....[X(] I´ll check out again. I think the A0 is hardcoded anyway. If you switch C&C on, how do the command points trace?[&:]

Your AR0 actually should still be at the end of the command line when it comes to distributing command points down to other HQ´s.[X(]

I wasn't sure that was the case. The A0 unit disappears off the Headquarters menu. Then when you delete all the bought units and re-buy the A0 slot disappears. I know I am doing something wrong but can't figure out what.

This is a simple process and should no produce the effects you had.
When I want to do something of this nature in a scenario I select all units and at the end select a singlge unit with the vehicle/tank I want eg a tank section.
Using Fred’s WAWEditor I then use its copy/ paste to change the AO unit. Save the result and then back in the scenario editor/purchase screen delete that last formation.
This saves having to fill out all the boxes in the WAWEditor.
A0 stays A0

I have been using the game's scenario editor and haven't tried Fred's WAW editor you mentioned. I thought you could change the unit type for any unit bought in the scenario editor including the HQ. I must be doing something wrong but can't figure out what. Not being familiar with Fred's editor I was using what I was familiar with.

Ok. I tried the Game editor on a few existing scenarios and it worked with no problem. The issue may be with the number of units you havwe per side or a snag in the actual scenario/Mech.exe inteaction.

One thing I have noticed is that at times if you build a scenario by buying units in groups, deploy and then get another group it can at time cause a bit of a problem. But as I said only occationally.

Try Fred's WAWEditor. It is handy for this type of editing.

Dragoon 45 -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/1/2005 8:16:34 AM)

I downloaded his add-ons but haven't tried them yet, guess I will in the near future. I just couldn't figure out what I did wrong that the A0 Unit would disappear off the Headquarters menu. I am trying to build an earlier Kursk scenario about the initial German attack into the salient using both mounted and dismounted SS troops with support from a 43a Tiger Company and some StuG's. I wanted the Headquarters A0 unit to be a Command Tiger to represent the Schwere Panzer Ableitung Commander who I put in charge of the attack. I got the map built and the Russian defenses laid out, but now can't get the Tiger I as the A0 headquarters. I hate to have to start over in another scenario and re-set the Russian defenses all because of the glitch with the headquarters unit.

omegaall -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/3/2005 5:29:54 PM)

Why download this?
Its in the Chlanda directory of SPWAW anyway.
You dont have to worry about all the extras in this editor either just the copy past aspect for Unit data. Dont forget the "Retain" button

RockinHarry -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/4/2005 6:13:51 PM)

Just run some quick test. A0 can be changed to different type without problems...so far. Command structure is preserved as well. I could imagine while using the "change this unit to a different type unit" function one can forget to click the changed unit back onto the map after leaving the selection screen. That might cause strange things as you mentioned, but if that happens one should restart the OOB from scratch since repairing those command structure stuff most likely is only doable by hex editing stuff (not tried yet).

Another nice tweak might be to change the new A0 commander rank to something that needs to fit for the chosen OOB command level. In example if the A0 serves as Btl. commander then it most likely needs to be changed to Major (or Captain). The default Colonel fits the original SPIII Brigade/Regimental level and In SPWAW it fits a regimental battle group (Kampfgruppe). However, beside flavor setting that stuff only makes sense when playing with C&C on.

Dragoon 45 -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/5/2005 4:42:41 AM)

I found a fix. Before I by any additional units I hit deploy and then change the HQ to the type unit I want. Then I quit deploy and go back to the buy screen and then buy the units I want. Everytime I want to change the type of unit the HQ is with other units already bought I get just about the same results in the orginal post. Judging from others posts I am beginning to think something is corrupted in my game files. Thanks for all the help.

Does sound as if there is something wrong in a file somewhere.

Twotribes -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/5/2005 7:26:02 AM)

A Bn commander is normally a Lt Col. A captain commands a company or a Major . A major is normally the Bn Executive Officer.

Wild Bill -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/5/2005 8:20:30 AM)

i've never had a problem. I buy the A0 unit. I then start buying other units. When I'm ready, I hit the "R" button in the scenario editor menu. I then pick the unit I want, such as a tank or other piece of equipment. Then I click on the same hex where the A0 unit was, (the red hexagon indicating where it was is on the map). I then click in that blank red hexagon and the tank appears.

This to me is the easiest and quickest way and has never failed me.

1. Buy A0 unit
2. Go to deploy menu
3. Highlight A0 uni
4. Click on "R" button
5. Pick unit from the available list.
6. Go back to deploy unit and left click on now vacant hex.
7. The newly chosen unit will appear.

omegaall -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/5/2005 2:18:47 PM)

WB your approach is the simplest and works 99.99% of the time.
It would appear that Dragoon 45 has hit that 0.01% situation.

This is usually caused by some odd curruption of a file somewhare, it's a toss up between Mech.exe and the actual game file for the specific scenario.
If its in all scenarios then start with the steel.prf file. ther option is unpack what ever mech.exe for teh 8.3/8.4x patch somewhere other than the working SP directory. Delete Mech.exe for yoru working dir and copy the new one into the SpWAW directory.
Not 100% fool proof but a probable start.

Yup, depends on time and army. Late war germans had colonels commanding divisions and all that stuff....

Cooper -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/24/2005 5:11:06 AM)

You are right Harry. After mid '43 Majors (in the German Army) commanded Bns or even Regiments, Cpts. commanded Bns, Lts commanded Companies, Feldwebels(Sgts) commanded platoons and Corporals were often in charge of squads.

Dragoon, I see no sense in converting the actual HQ unit. I always have an XO unit (a command vehicle) as transport for the HQ, and THIS unit can be later upgraded. Why would you want to change this 6-man HQ anyway? This, to me, is something that should not be altered, so why bother?

Dragoon 45 -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/24/2005 8:27:45 AM)

KG

German Panzer Forces made extensive use of Command Tanks for their senior leaders throughout the war. A lot of times a Kampfgruppe leader would be the senior Panzer commander within the kampfgruppe. Early in the war the command tanks lacked a main gun and were just equipped with a single MG, but later specially adapted command tanks were fielded with extra radio equipment and reduced ammo load out. I am trying to be a little more historical accurate in some of the scenario's I do. If the scenario is largely infantry based, then by all means the HQ should be the 6 man headquarters element; but where the force in question is largely armor based then it is more accurate to have a command tank. I know this is personal preference, but if I design a scenario I like to get it as close to historically accurate as possible.

Wild Bill -> RE: Changing Headquarters Unit to another type unit (9/24/2005 8:42:40 AM)

WHile I rarely disagree with the gunny, I'll have to take the other side here.

There are cases where the HQ unit historically would be better changed. THis is one of those cases. Another would be a Wittmann scenario of which I've done a couple. Now I can't see Wittmann outside of his Tiger. So the AO unit in this case would be a Tiger tank. Case in point. Look at scenarios 201 and 204. The A0 Unit is a Tiger.
