I am still intrigued by movement at extreme latitudes, where the hexes are narrower.

Assuming WitP style "horizontally stacking" hexes:
             /\
        NW / \ NE
           / \
          | |
        W | | E
          | |
           \ /
        SW \ / SE
             \/

I understand that the effective hex width will decrease based on some sort of formula dependent on the hex Y co-ordinate. This will have the effect of increasing movement speed in the W & E directions.

What about movement in the NW, NE, SW & SE directions though? The hex height (not represented by a hex side) does not change. Will you actually use vector calculations to work it out? Or just apply a simple ratio? Or just use the basic vertical speed unmodified? Or ... ?

Or perhaps you are thinking of using vertically stacking hexes? That doesn't actually change this problem though since you still have NW, NE, SW & SE directions ...
              N
            ----
       NW / \ NE
          / \
          \ /
       SW \ / SE
            ----
             S

The height of each hex in minutes of arc varies while the width in minutes does not.

I like the idea - esp. the Supreme Commander/voting system.

Would it be possible to delegate non-"theatre" responsibilities to individual players? I could see people enjoying playing an "Albert Speer" type player.

I don't know enough about the map/hex debate except to say that I dislike the "hex" approach as a general rule - after 1all these years, we should be able to do better - but that a 3d map has never been proven workable in a game like this.

Edit: Don't forget the WitP Wish List sticky!

Yes. I am one of those nuts that would kinda enjoy that kind of role, so I had already thought of means of seperating out that role.

subscription based = not for me.

Never given in on that basic point yet, and hopefully never will.

That is too bad, because subscription based services have the potential to provide you higher quality product.

You've lost me there, I was thinking it was the width that varies. It seems like you have it all worked out though.

Yes, yes and yes again. Economics does not take a break just because computers, wargames and the internet are involved.

I seem to remember banging on about this ages ago.

It can get confusing because you are dealing with distances on paper, not the acutal globe. A Mercator projection appears as a rectangular based grid system so as you get closer to the poles the actual distance between lines of longitude shorten on a globe but the width between longitudinal lines on paper remains constant. The land graphic underneath is stretched to fit. That's why Greenland appears so much larger on a Mercator projection than it actually is. Its been "stretched" to accomodate the constant width paper longitudinal lines.
