WhoCares -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 5:35:26 PM)

Pacific Kneipp Club?

Sonny -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:06:05 PM)

Guys with super soakers filling them up to fight the fire in the background.

Stavka_lite -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:06:14 PM)

Marines landing on Tarawa by the looks of the distance to the beach[&:]

Mike Solli -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:09:10 PM)

It doesn't look like they're being shot at to me.

Speedysteve -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:10:46 PM)

I wondered if it was Tarawa too.

At least not the guy in the foreground with the shouldered weapon [:'(]

Jim D Burns -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:13:17 PM)

US army troops landing in the Philippines (Legaspi or Lingayen perhaps) in 1944 is my guess.

Jim

Speedysteve -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:16:18 PM)

They do look very relaxed. Either that or over confident [;)]

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:17:23 PM)

Hmmm - no one is trying for the weapons.

I'll guess an LCT, and troops armed with M1 Garand rifles and M1 + M2 carbines...

EDIT: Arghh - typo! - should be LVT, not LCT!!

tsimmonds -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:41:37 PM)

US Army, not USMC. Does look like Tarawa though, so my guess would be Makin. LVT1A.

Terminus -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 7:53:57 PM)

Irrelevant gets it! Found the picture, and the credit identifies it as Yellow Beach on Makin. The troops would be from 165th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division.

Capt Cliff -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 9:10:22 PM)

Can't be Tarawa. The Higgin's boat to the right would have never made it over the reef!

Terminus -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 9:12:38 PM)

Nope. It's Makin, alright.

Twotribes -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/7/2005 9:16:49 PM)

I know Makin had trees. Did Tarawa? I had the impression all this time it had few large flora on it. Especially after the navy blasted it. ( did you know that part of the bombardment was useless at Tarawa. the angle of fire had the shells richoting off the island into the water on the far side)

Brady -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 7:44:20 AM)

Makin, it is[:)]

165th Infentry regiment, it is[:)]

deggo -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 9:28:51 AM)

Time-Life WWII series "Island Fighting" identifies it as 27TH Inf at Butaritari Island/Makin.

ilovestrategy -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 5:24:11 PM)

Where is Makin? I'm trying to find it on my world map on my wall.

Twotribes -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 5:27:08 PM)

Just North and east of Tarawa.

Cap Mandrake -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 5:44:36 PM)

More precisely it is "STORMING YELLOW BEACH, first wave of the 2d Battalion Landing Team, 165th Infantry, wades over wide reef under machine-gun fire from wharf on each flank. At 1040, 20 November 1943, they approach the main defensive area from the lagoon. Fires from hits by big naval guns."

Pic of assault on Yellow Beach (North side of island)

Terminus -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 6:39:59 PM)

If they're being machinegunned from either flank, they're rather relaxed about it.

Well everybody knows the allies get so much stuff by that time in the war that casualties don't mean anything.

Terminus -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 8:03:06 PM)

In 11/43?

witpqs -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 8:32:23 PM)

It's a joke. "... casualties don't mean anything." Except to the casualties!

Twotribes -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 9:55:08 PM)

I didnt think Tarawa was that late.

Terminus -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 10:12:42 PM)

D-Day for Tarawa was 11/20/43, Makin a week later.

tsimmonds -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 11:17:55 PM)

D-Day for both landings was Nov 20, 1943.

Terminus -> RE: Name This...(428) (9/9/2005 11:29:15 PM)

So it was. I misread my reference material...
