TheDesertRat -> Some detective work needed (9/11/2005 4:19:01 PM)

With this post there is a small text file with ALL the names extracted from the Mech.exe

I need some help placing the names to a country. Some Names appear in several contries also, just for fun[:@]

Small editor job on way soon I hope.

If you can help please PM your results back to me.

Depot don't seem to be accesable so I can not post it there[:@][:@]

So far I have got the Italian list complet, thansk for the help on taht one.

Of interest though there are 28 countries in this game they do not so far appear to be evenly distributed with respect to the number of names per country.

ie not as simple as with SPWW2 etal.

Simply put until I get every name mapped to a country or 2 or 3 .... It is not going to be an obvious solution for this small bit of entertainment.

You get to play with it after, I am just writing the code[:@]

Tell me more about this project, Desert Rat. As of now, the leader names can be altered after force selections are made.

Are you proposing an editor to allow permanent changes to the "names" files? This would be cool, as I tend to assign historical commanders (when possible) to my units.

However, since names are randomly chosen from the list, this really wouldn't help that much, would it?

What I'd really like is a way to "plug-in" pre-chosen core forces into a long campaign.

In general this game is very flexiable and I am surprised that a lot more has not been done by third parties re editors etc. That is beside the OOB adjustments.

FlashfyreSP -> RE: Some detective work needed (9/14/2005 5:18:09 AM)

Gunny, I can tell you one reason why this needs done: the names list for the Philippine OOB are all incorrect. Someone, somewhere, entered all Chinese-type names for a people who were under Spanish rule for so long they adopted their names. Anybody who has been in the Navy can tell you, Filipinos have names like Pease, Dulce, Mallari, Atencio, Casas, Garcia, Reyes, and so on. BTW, those names belonged to a number of the cooks and supply clerks on my boat in 1986.

Granted, the names are chosen at random...but that's the beauty of it. If you could alter the list for the OOB of your choice, and put in the names you want to see in the game (maybe you want to see all your buddies, or your ex-wives, or whatever), how cool would that be?!

m10bob -> RE: Some detective work needed (9/14/2005 6:24:02 AM)

I really like the concept of being able to change the names, and if you could "save" the names (as Glen suggested), it would really be great..

Well so much for doing and editor for the Mech.exe file.

The format structures of the names are a little messy, and that is being nice. Though the names fall into “blocks” there are some names which hang out on the fringe. These will cause a problem.
A lot depends on the underlying algorithm for the collection of names. Though it appears to be relatively basic these fringe issue suggest it has some “novelties” from a code sense.

At present all that can be extracted which may be of some novelty to all are the names and associated countries.

I want to thank FlashfyreSP, Mau Fox, Resisti and “Danny” for their help.

I will continue looking at this and derive a process where you can allocate you units with your selected name.

The spreadsheet to date as per link

This problem is exactly what caused the complete abandonement of my proposed Korean War mod for SPWAW!!! I wish we had done the names ala SPWW2 convention, ie in a seperate dat file, ranks also, I really had something going too....

And Greek names are all from antiquity: Polybius, Hippokrates, Demosthenes. In modern Greece those name are rare. Most of them are like Papadopoulos, Kleridis, Papazogolakis or Lianis.

Chinese names are also rather peculiar, but are mostly O.K. Not many people know that but Chinese has not much different words. SP names catalogue can in effect contain all Chinese words, which are not countless, but their combinations are as you can multiply them with four tones used with all Chinese words. Proper Chinese names are like: Zhong, Shang, Bin, Liu, Hui, Hao, Ri, Ben, San, Guo, Gong, Zuo, Ling, Mao, Ren (and much more).

A couple of German names are also a bit strange: Abt and Achtzehn. 'Achtzehn' in German means 'eighteen' and Abt is possibly an abreviation from Abteilung, meaning 'unit'. Other German names are also somewhat Aryan, like 'Kleemann', 'Naumann', 'Heydrich' and 'Eberbach'. There are no names like 'Plutka', 'Jeppe', 'Schimanski' or 'Hiedler'. Also absent are Austrian names like 'Schwarzenegger' or 'Schickelgruber'.

Finnish names are all O.K. There may still be some amusement found in names like 'Paasikivi', 'Kekkonen', 'Svinhufvud', 'Kallio', and 'Relander'. It is like saying 'Truman', 'Eisenhower', 'Hoover', 'Coolidge' and 'Roosevelt'.

TheDesertRat -> RE: Some detective work needed (9/19/2005 7:58:54 AM)

Well actually things with SPWW2 are totally different.

Yes there is the option of using the provided text files with names and they can be changed with in the limits of the name structures.

The other thing is the way names are stired in SPWW2. There they are all 15 characters long in the spww2.exe file and I suspect that the selection process is a bit more simpler that in SPWAW.

Simply put different games, different design issues.
Though the SPWW2 system would be easier to deal with for most people who whish to modify the names.

Note though in eother game you still do not control the names of leaders of specific units. Different issue altogether.
