Og -> Docked, in Port, in TF? (9/14/2005 9:49:41 PM)

Good Sirs;

Can someone explain to me the following:

1)If I attack the port with aircraft will I also bomb docked task forces? Are they more or less vulnerable than disbanded ships in port?

2)If I attack the port with surface bombardment do I also hit docked task forces?

3) Will I ever attack docked task forces on a surface combat mission?

4) can a single b17 get more than one hit on a docked task force?

You can direct me to other threads if you like where this is all explained.

Thanks for your time
Og

For attacks what matters if if the ships are in a TF, undocked or not, or disbanded in port. Aerial Port attacks and naval bombardment will hit the latter, while naval attack raids and surface TF will engage the former. Also bombardment TF will react as surface TF vs enemy TFs.

The only difference between docked and undocked TFs is for submarine attacks in ports size 3 and more. Docked TF won't be attacked, undocked may be and they may find the submarine or mines also, while docked TF won't do anything.

Then the fact that a TF is docked or not may change the probability of hits with bombs.

Don't know about the B-17s.

Supposedly, a docked TF is more vulnerable, but not sure it makes a lot of difference. I've noticed that they will sometimes undock on there own if under attack.

Supposedly, a level bomber can only put 1 hit on a single ship in an attack - they are assumed to drop bombs 1 at a time (not in a single stick) and the distance they travel in the time between bombs is supposed to be greater than the length of a ship.

If you work out the numbers, this is not true (for a slow - medium fast bomber), i.e. 120 miles/hr = 176 ft/sec., 180 miles/hr = 264 ft/sec. Even dropping bombs 1/sec could put multiple hits on a large ship, and usually they spilled out faster than that (say about 2/sec), which could get a 180 mile/hour bomber 1 bomb every 132 feet, or if flying along the long axis of a BB or CV, the bomber might plant 5 (or more) bombs on a big ship. However, the game does not allow this.

I am not sure that is true though, I know the rule says that but I have had two bombers put more than 2 hits on a single ship. Or I recall that anyway.

Interesting - never had that experience.
