Japanese_Spirit -> One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 11:41:36 AM)

Hi all,

Well, I finally brought the game and I am enjoying it! However, a couple of things bug me that I thought I would mention, see if anyone had any answers to my questions.

1) Every time I play the main Pacific War campaign, the entire game takes such a long time to load between turns. Is this normal or is this an error? I can waiting up to 10 or even 15 minutes for the turn to process. I am kind of one of those people that like to jump in but if it does take that long, I can live with that. I have an up to date computer.

2) Is it realistic for say 700 or so men to be dying in the first landing? I've noticed Japan losing 900 plus troops for the first couple of turns when landing in both Aparri and Vigan in particular. Is this a bug or just part of the game? I just think 900 Japanese troops getting slaughtered myself in one go is quite shocking but that's just me.

Well, that's about it. As soon as I can handle the speed, etc, I should be fine.

Terminus -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 11:53:05 AM)

Welcome to WitP!

1): The game can take a loooooooooooooooooooooong time to process turns. If you notice, the phase "Training Ship Crews" takes especially long; when I got to it for the first time, I was convinced the game had crashed, and I have an up-to-date box too.

2): The 900 casualties aren't all dead. It represents everything that can go wrong in a complex operation like an amphibious landing, from a marine falling off a scrambling net and breaking a leg, to somebody dropping a mortar in the sea, to a truck having a flat tire. Nothing to worry about.

About question #1
Defragmentation made a magic for me. After I did it turns take less than 3minuts. And I have animations and reports ON.
Also check the message settings, by default the indication time for the one message is like 10-15seconds so just try to dicrease it.

Terminus -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 12:23:23 PM)

Erm, sorry gunner, but it's 1.0-1.5 seconds.

Q 1

Turn everything off, clean up your computer and get more ram. Theres a whole world of difference between my laptop and the desktop's 1GB of ram.

Turn processing in big scenario (scen 15 or 16) is really long, but I think that 15 minutes is too much for an up to date PC.
You can speed it up adjusting game settings (decrease message timing etc).
What's your PC configuration? how much RAM do you have?
On my laptop, going from 256mb to 512mb helped a lot.
Try also, as suggested, a defrag and disable resource consuming programs that run in background (file sharing, antivirus etc).

BYE

Defrag is always helpful, even if it does take three or five hours for a modern HDD.

Halsey -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 2:07:11 PM)

3-5 hrs?[&:]
A 120gb HD shouldn't take longer than 20-40 minutes. Depending on how often you do it.
You should defrag your drive a couple times a week in addition to doing drive cleanup.

It's called keeping your PC healthy.[:D]

Terminus -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 2:08:08 PM)

Well, mine is, in fact, a 120Gb. The shortest time I've done is about two and half hours...

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 2:14:28 PM)

Reducing message delays helps .. also tap esc. key speeds thing up a lot :) but be careful in case u miss something [:-]

also tapping the space bar when a message pops up does the same as esc. but only one at a time .. try it and you'll see whan i mean . not easily described in words ( esp on a sunday morning )

Gongrats with getting the game .. hope you have as much entertainment as its given me !

I guess things run a lot slower in Europe.[:D]
You should defrag every other day then.

It'll speed up the cleanup next time.
As long as it's done routinely.

In addition, at least 16-17% of your HD sould always be kept unused. Minimum!
This helps speed up the transfer of information while processing.

patrickl -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 2:24:57 PM)

Hi Terminus,

You must have got a lot of stuff in your computer to take that long to defrag. [X(]

If a defraq takes that long, then it needs the defrag even more!

Charles2222 -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 2:35:47 PM)

I do one maybe once a month and it don't take over an hour. Seems it usally takes 20-30 minutes, but then I don't install/unistall programs like there' no tomorrow either. 2.8G BTW.

Please note that if you are using NTFS file system (on WinXP for example), as opposed to FAT32, the defrag would not mean much at all...

Currently, I have 24% free space on my HDD. And yes, I do keep a lot of stuff on it. I'm running a defrag right now (put it on pause); we'll see how long it takes to finish.

I know all the stuff above, but I actually have to use my box EVERY DAY, so I don't really have time to defrag 3 or 4 times a week...

wworld7 -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 3:03:37 PM)

I'm lucky if I can defrag every other month ( I do try).

Set up a schedule to have it happen automatically at night.

You are correct![;)]

NTFS drives are larger than 120gbs.
Did I get that right?[:D]

pompack -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 8:55:40 PM)

Use the "Z" key. Hit it during processing and all messages will flash by at minimum until you get an animation or combat result, then it reverts. The "Escape" key is similar, but using it can cause you to miss a combat result. Use "Z" and that won't happen. Depending on what message delays you have set up[&:], it could save as much as 90 minutes[8|] on the turn processing (but probably only about 20 minutes if you are using the default delays)

Japanese_Spirit -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 10:57:28 PM)

Hi all,

Thanks for the quick replies. I was quite shocked to see 19 replies lol. Nice to know that this is a friendly Pacific War gaming community. [:)]

Anyway, so it could be my computer? Hmmmmm..........and I have noticed it being slow on "Training Ship Crews".........well, I have 2.52 Ghz, 512MB and an up to date graphic card. About 12GB free on the PC. I might defrag it then I guess. I'll let everyone know how it goes but I want to get it up to 3 minutes atleast.

Also, the casulties tends to mean anything from getting caught in a net? Phew, I thought it was Gallipoli or D-Day everytime.

Nope, mine are dual 80 gb HDDs. Drive C is my primary and drive f is for backup files.

ChezDaJez -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 11:36:21 PM)

Your specs sound fine. It should be noted that there is always a delay when "training ships crews" appears on the screen. For me it stays between 15-30 seconds then practically flashes through the rest (depending on whats happening at the time).

Chez

Terminus -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/18/2005 11:44:19 PM)

The specs sound okay; more RAM is always better, of course. I have 1 Gb, and a turn can take 5-8 minutes, depending on the level of action.

AmiralLaurent -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/19/2005 1:54:01 AM)

Well I have a PC that was up-to-date in 2000 (700 Mhz) and I still play WITP turns in 15-30 minutes depending of the activity. I think your main problem is the game settings, most of them are at 2 secondes, put them to 0.5 sec or 0.1 sec (the last for map moves). Having an uptodate graphic card doesn't help, WITP is using graphics like 1980s games did.

The only speed problems I met were in the last game. I several times hit hard Allied convoys and then did'nt stay to achieve the ships. Seems that the AI was creating cripples TF and not being able to comput how to do it, having too much cripples in the same hex. In both cases, the "divide cripple from TF" now took 5-10 minutes and there are 4 of them in a turn... In both cases, I corrected the problem by attacking again the convoy and sinking all cripples.

Gem35 -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/19/2005 7:08:50 AM)

After January '42 in game the game should start to speed up for you. Another tip might be to turn off your background applications such as anti-virus, firewall, etc. If you are worried you would be vulnerable with your anti-virus and or firewall off, disable your internet connection. If you are running windows 98 Control/Alt/Delete and shut off everything except explorer and systray. If you are running win xp do the same and selectively shut down any applications or processes running. Terminus you need to get a new hard drive soon my friend, if you have a dvd burner get some DVD+RW's and use them to store some files to free up space on your hard drive. Don't forget to run disk clean-up and compress old files. Go into your windows temp folder and delete everything, those files are as useless as a frenchmen. [;)]

It's only if it is a single greater than 120gbs.
Dual HD's are not added together.
They would have to both be greater than 120gbs.

Gem35 -> RE: One or two questions regarding gameplay (9/20/2005 2:42:11 PM)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.....
quote:

NTFS or New Technology File System is the standard file system of Windows NT and its descendants Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Windows versions 95, 98, 98SE and ME cannot natively read NTFS filesystems, although third-party utilities do exist for this purpose.

Huh?

Windows XP uses either of two file systems. The old one, called FAT32, is easily fragmented. Windows XP users who have FAT32 file systems shold continue to defrag the hard disk often. The other file system is NTFS, which does not get fragmented as readily. Furthermore, NTFS was designed to allow defragging operations to proceed while the computer is doing other tasks. Fragmentation is a problem only when file fragments become so numerous on a computer's hard drive that they slow down file access. Drives are faster than they used to be, and this means fragmentation doesn't show up as a problem in some cases.

quote:

Did I get that right?

Nope...[;)] NTFS drives can be any size.
