Adamo -> Using smoke? (9/19/2005 9:19:45 PM)

Is it possible for a rifle squad to lay down smoke to conceal an advance? I bring this up because I was watching a scene in 'Band of Brothers' and Lt. Winters threw a canister that spewed out a red gas and then the squad advanced behind the cloud of red smoke. I don't know if this is a common tactic but I was wondering if it can be done in SPWAW. I know that mortars and other artillery units can lay down smoke.

thanks

adam

It's not really valid in the game, since squad smoke grenades can't be launched further than one hex.

Don't forget, one hex is fifty yards. Would take one hell of a soldier to throw a smoke grenade 100yards or more.[X(]

It might be kind of gamey. I play Combat Mission also. In their manual they mention that infantry in the game doesn't have smoke to lay down. Apparantly they did a lot of research and found it was very rarely used for anything but signalling. Funny how they included a disparaging remark that "other" games included infantry smoke though. Since I haven't personally researched it, I couldn't tell for sure.

I think that was the right decision NOT to include infantry smoke grenades in the CM game. In SPWAW it is a hell of an annoyance.[:@]

Special assault teams surely had some smoke grenades to their avail, but not the majority of line infantry.[:-] I usually delete all smoke stuff in my own scenarios by use of Freds WaW editor which makes it a one minute affair.[:)]

Kevin E. Duguay -> RE: Using smoke? (9/21/2005 11:20:15 PM)

Many of the countries in the game did not even issue smoke grenades to their troops. (Chi Coms, Russia, only engineers but few, etc)

This should have been made an ammo type and not just an assumption.

To go off on a tangent for a second, I play CM also and I truly love the game but in all their literature and many times in their manuals they go on and on about what 'other' games do wrong and about how they got it 'right'. You're right on the money, Rich. Pretty silly. I wish the guys at Battlefront would just tell us how to play the game and hold the commentary.

How do smoke dischargers for AFV's work in the game. What mechanism fires the smoke wall, is it an actual launcher on the tank, the main gun or the crew ?

Baneman -> RE: Using smoke? (9/23/2005 4:30:22 PM)

IIRC, the red smoke that Capt. Winters throws IS a signal - was it not used so that the other half of the platoon could launch their attack / covering fire ?
