DaveB -> Login (9/28/2005 10:06:39 PM)

This is going to sound silly, but... WHY should I need a login and password, which I subsequently have to record, just to 'talk' to other game players? I have over 16 pages of closely written login details - I gave up today and generated a new account as I'm fed up trying to find login info I don't use regularly. Identity theft isn't really an issue - requiring logins for trivial purposes is poor security (sorry, I like the games, but chatting about them is a trivial activity) as it strongly encourages people to reuse passwords and usernames.... login info that protects important stuff like online bank details etc. Overdoing security, as any competent network manager knows, tends to actually undermine it - so WHY must identity be 'proved' when all you are doing is okaying people to post on something as insignificant as a gamers chat board? (not that identity is actually proved in any way shape or form anyway, as all it takes is a valid email account which Osama Bin laden could set up in 5 mins or less) via Yahoo etc). It just seems a bit 'jobsworth' to me - all sites have logins, whether it's important to verify ID or not... why?
