This is going to sound silly, but...
WHY should I need a login and password, which I subsequently have to record, just to 'talk' to other game players? I have over 16 pages of closely written login details - I gave up today and generated a new account as I'm fed up trying to find login info I don't use regularly. Identity theft isn't really an issue - requiring logins for trivial purposes is poor security (sorry, I like the games, but chatting about them is a trivial activity) as it strongly encourages people to reuse passwords and usernames.... login info that protects important stuff like online bank details etc. Overdoing security, as any competent network manager knows, tends to actually undermine it - so WHY must identity be 'proved' when all you are doing is okaying people to post on something as insignificant as a gamers chat board? (not that identity is actually proved in any way shape or form anyway, as all it takes is a valid email account which Osama Bin laden could set up in 5 mins or less) via Yahoo etc).
It just seems a bit 'jobsworth' to me - all sites have logins, whether it's important to verify ID or not... why?

I imagine that one possible explanation is so that a single entity (say "pornandgameshop.com") cant create a couple hundred spam advertisements on these boards (via some short software program) just like they used to spam everyones emails.

I am not a forum moderator, so I cannot tell you how much stuff actually gets blocked from accessing us via Matrix's servers. Even if Matrix "rents" space on a commercial internet webserver, that service will include spam/hacking protection, as well as the usual stuff like making backups.

Yep, you'd be surprised at the number of spammish posts at boards that allow guests to post. It's actually pretty easy to write a macro to post the same thing on every board every day and if the forum allows guest accounts it just makes it that much easier. At least with login info if someone attempts such a thing their account will quickly be blocked.

I do run a message board of my own on a private computer that does not allow guests to post. I am a member of a few forums that do allow guests. Turns out there's really no big scare as long as the company/forum doesn't become over-popular :)

Don't forget that your account is also tied to downloads, support, purchasing, serial numbers, etc; etc; Not to mention the agreement you 'sign' upon creation of the account.......Matrix terms of legalese to CYA.

I just have one low security name and login for all of my non-financials. I don't need a list of passwords when I have one login that I use everywhere. Financial sites are different, of course, but who needs a multitude of passwords for game sites? One standard login should do.

I have my pc save my password at sites like this and so there is no need to login all the time. Every blue moon or so, I notice that I am suddenly listed as a guest again, but for places like here, I have a list of my passwords in an Outlook Express folder, so I just cut and paste when needed...
