Once in a great while maybe. This forum on whole seems very civilized and without rancor.

Generally speaking, no. For housekeeping duties (i.e., moving threads to proper sub-forums), yes.

Thoughts?

Goblin -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/1/2005 8:39:51 AM)

I would say no.

Twotribes -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/1/2005 9:00:36 AM)

Better to have a moderator then not. All of us at times are tempted and may post inappropriate material, either because we were baited or cause we had a bad day. Better safe than sorry.

BulletMagnet -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/1/2005 11:19:51 AM)

I would expect that from you, considering that the Depot has a dozen or so "moderators" for FAR fewer members than this forum has.

Is it necessity, or a private clique? Hmmm.

Its not the quantity its the QUALITY.

Really gunny. This the type of stuff that just shows that yes this site may need a moderator as long it is not YOU.

Twotribes -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/1/2005 12:40:00 PM)

I dont agree with Gunny's politics ( he has if I recall right, posted at madcows?) but generally he does not appear to abuse moderator powers here.

Take personal grudges else where.

Goblin -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/1/2005 3:16:42 PM)

Gunny,

The Depot has alot of moderators to serve its members. We have hundreds of downloads that constantly need tended too, the Academy, the MilHis forum areas, the OOB Project, The Campaign, etc (we average 9 new threads and over 85 new posts per day)...

This place has few areas. Everyone behaves more or less civil. Mogami was able to come over and police a complaint when he was needed.

In all honesty, when you asked about a mod being posted here, I assumed you were lobbying for it. After the last time (which you yourself admitted was a bad idea) of edited posts and heavy-handedness, I voted no. If you did not want peoples honest opinions, or were going to take cheap shots at a site that is not even involved in this discussion, why did you ask?

Alby -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/1/2005 4:51:05 PM)

As a moderator at the Depot I can speak for myself...
My main function is to help out members who need help finding answers or getting files..etc etc...and we all have our particluar areas to offer our support in.
I do not consider myself an overseer, looking to find the guy whose opinion I do not agree with, or do not like the way he puts things and then delete or lock his post.
That kind of stuff happens rarely at the depot anyway, with the exception of a few..[;)]

So if you think we need a moderator here, I say no....
If his only job would be to lock down threads and the like.
Anyone coming here, looking for help usually gets the answers he or she is looking for, and you have been very good in that role. keep it up, and I will as well.

I think I know why the question was raised tho , as Wild Bill was asking for the "3 years..." thread to be locked. Is that why?

Nice work Glenn....you promised me that you no longer held any rancor or ill will towards the Depot, and flat-out told me that you did not subscribe to the 'ideas' you posted above: was that all a lie? Two short months ago you posted this 'public apology' to the SPWAW community:

quote:

ORIGINAL: KG Erwin
I was banned from the SPWaW Depot forums for some really nasty and stupid things I said many months ago. I was wrong, and I sincerely apologize for any damage I may have done to the Depot's credibility.

I make no excuses -- my comments were unwarranted, and my accusations were unfounded.

It is obvious that the Depot's members are only focused upon enhancing the game and contributing to its legacy, that and nothing more.

That is also my intention on this forum, and why I remain an active contributor.

Many of my closest friends are members of both forums.

I throw myself at the mercy of the Depot's administrators, and request that I be reinstated as a forum member.
...and now, for no reason that I can see, you make another unwarranted attack on these same 'close friends'? I believed and trusted you Glenn; is this my reward for that?

Well, its time to 'reap what you have sown' buddy: the terms of your probation at the Depot say nothing about where a 'violation' occurs, and the wild, untrue allegations you posted clearly qualify as a 'violation'. What the hell is wrong with you? Do you not see that its you who continues to try to fracture the community? What exactly are you trying to achieve?

In a word, yes.

IBTyrone -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/1/2005 9:04:24 PM)

Whoa. No need to escalate this boys. Glenn, if you think the depot mod group is a "clique" then share that with them, preferably privately. They're big boys, they can take it. (Tracer--chill!)

I've enjoyed having your input over there--you've started some good discussion and interaction--keep up the good work, but please don't take potshots at the mods. They are distributing the mountain of work, and if they are collegial about it, so be it--you or I don't have to be part of the mod group to contribute to the community.

The guy that started that "3 years..." thread here was in my opinion nothing more than a troll. If he really was concerned about the state of steel panthers, he would do more than stop by every three years, drop a bomb and then mosey on. Let it go.

This forum has been doing fine since Glenn has stepped down and I'd like to see it stay that way. So what if things get cluttered? Use your search function. So what if trolls drop bombs? Ignore them. MGF Steel Panthers forum doesn't need a mod.

Jeff

We're not.

m10bob -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/2/2005 3:14:37 AM)

There was a saying in the Prussian/German army for enlisted men, that if you felt you had a grievance with a superior, wait 24 hours before making an official complaint.
Unfortunately, this standard is hard for some on the forums to practice, and inebriates and social misfits tend to provoke without fairness or consideration, just to fulfill an agenda and "correct" an imagined wrong.
These folks always bring stuff back onto themselves, and ALWAYS blame somebody else..........
Is a moderator needed ?
As noted in an earlier post, some moderators see themselves as folks in a position to *help* others.
Some "moderators" think their true function is "censor"..
We don't need any hall monitors here.

Orzel Bialy -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/2/2005 8:11:16 AM)

I would say be thankful there isn't a mod here Glenn...as some of the personal attacks and potshots you took in this thread and another might have landed you with a vacation.

ps...being under the influence shouldn't be looked at as a valid excuse for posting childish rants either Gunny. Would you accept that from some drunk who plowed into your car at a stoplight and then got out and said "oh boy sorry about that, just a little plastered here."? [8|]

OK Glenn, its been two days since you typed this last reply, and you've posted nothing here to explain your insulting comments. I saw the explanation/apology that you posted at the Depot, but without a similar post here it is meaningless.

KG Erwin -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/4/2005 1:10:41 AM)

Well, here it is:

"Alright, alright-- look, the comments by certain members about the superiority of another OOB set over 8.3, which many of us worked many hours on, just rubbed me the wrong way.

It also seems odd to me that jabs taken at Matrix are perfectly fine, but the Depot tends to circle the wagons when any hint of criticism is directed this way. Is that not a double standard?

Right now, I'm assisting in testing the new mech.exe patch, which will be excellent once it's done. I regard this as an honor and a privilege, and I've been trying to help in passing along suggested changes.

This may end up being a no-win situation for me -- hell, even my wife wondered why I'd want to get reinstated (at the Depot).

As for "secret societies" -- my God, how often did the Matrix OOB Teams get accused of being "SWAGs"? As a (Matrix) moderator, I took repeated personal insults 'till I couldn't stand it anymore.

Unfortunately, all this stuff has followed me, so this is why I suggested some personal conversations could help resolve some long-standing issues which need to be put to rest.

What do you want me to do? A permanent banning solves nothing -- it only leaves a cloud hanging over the relations between the Depot and Matrix."

PS: To an outside observer, all of this would seem bizarre, to say the least. However, the simple perception of a rift is enough to keep new players away from the game, and by extension, prevent them from registering at the forums.

m10bob -> RE: Is A Moderator Needed Here? (10/4/2005 1:22:34 AM)

Glenn....Matrix had nothing to do with it.
YOUR comments were and are the issue.
You (in this post) are still trying to justify your comments.
I am sorry you do not understand this.
You do not recall that several of us went to bat for you, truly believing you knew you had made a mistake in the past, and wished to "move on" with a changed perspective.
You got back in, and in less than a month, have betrayed those of us who helped you.
You have a problem that transcends these forums.
I suggest you seek help.............[:(]

Then you are in the wrong part of this hobby. Stick to playing the game instead of working on it if you cannot handle the criticism. Working hours on something is no guarantee it is going to be popular. If people like it, they will say so. If they do not, they will say so. It does not reflect on the amount of work put in, which was a tremendous amount, it reflects on peopl's likes and dislikes.

Criticism is accepted here. Blatant lies and 'conspiracy' theories are generally going to be shot down. Matrix is also a game company, and are big boys. Negative comments about their products/patches/whatever are part of the business. I also see you blur the line between criticism of something Matrix produces, and jabs at Matrix in general. They are not the same. Want to point out a perceived flaw in the OOB Project? Go ahead. Do not slam the entire site with crap that you said you were wrong for saying in the first place.

quote:

As for "secret societies" -- my God, how often did the Matrix OOB Teams get accused of being "SWAGs"? As a moderator, I took repeated personal insults 'till I couldn't stand it anymore.

Um, that's because everything was kept secret. See the connection? Your moderating style may have drawn some heat. I do not believe people just started to slam you for no reason. I was a member at Matrix then too, remember?

quote:

Unfortunately, all this stuff has followed me, so this is why I suggested some personal conversations could help resolve some long-standing issues which need to be put to rest.

The only person with issues that need to be put to rest is you. None of this stuff has 'followed' anyone else. I see no one else getting lit and posting the things that you do. Let it go and concentrate on the future.

What do you want me to do? A permanent banning solves nothing -- it only leaves a cloud hanging over the relations between the Depot and Matrix.

I beg to differ. You are not Matrix Games. A permanent banning does one thing. It bans you. Everyone else will continue to enjoy the game without imagined grudges and rifts. They will still be a great gaming company, and we will still be supporting one of their best games. The difference is, you would not be there. That's the only 'cloud'. The decision will be made when all pertinent staff members have had a chance for discussion.

First off Glenn, Matrix and the Depot get along just fine: Bernie and David Heath have spoken many times and say nothing but 'good' about the other. Is it OK if I label this 'delusion number 1'?

Next, nobody is questioning the time/commitment put into the 8.3 OOBs, but if you took the time to 'ask around' you'll discover that they are not generally thought of as 'superior'. They have numerous inconsistencies and errors, and from what I can see they have been 'abandoned' in that none of the original team is addressing the needed 'fixes'. Since no one is 'standing behind them', I have no idea who you think you are 'defending'....and simply bad-mouthing anyone who now attempts to do the work necessary to fix them is a pretty poor 'defense' IMO.

Matrix Games has always directed customers to its forums to 'find answers to problems'....hell, we used to joke that we were tech-support. Lately the number of 'gurus' found here regularly is lower than it was in the past, so of course the number of 'unanswered' questions/complaints is higher. Instead of accusing someone who seeks answers here of being 'disloyal', have you considered helping them find an answer? On the flip-side, the only steady source of public 'anti-Depot' comments that I know of is you....and by your own admission they are all based on 'feelings' that you have, not facts. Can we finally put this argument 'to bed'??

And in regards to your P.S.: (choke-cough-cough!) What??? The only 'voice of disharmony' that they hear is yours! And I'm not talking about 'disagreements' or 'differences of opinion' Glenn, you keep making these broad accusations of 'evil against SPWAW' and direct them at a large portion of the community. Worse, it is only the newer members who might think such posts are anything more than personal suspicions based falsehoods. When we lifted your ban at the Depot, you assured me (and posted publicly) that you now saw how rediculous those ideas were...what brought on this relapse in judgement?

Man, its getting close to the point where my replies to you will begin with "Do I know you?".
