Big B -> P40N (10/4/2005 8:19:08 PM)

Am I the only one to notice that the P40N series aircraft in the game, has been turned into the SLOWEST P40 model (max speed 350), instead of the Fastest?

quote:

Vital Statistics Curtiss P-40N-20 Warhawk
Type : Single seat fighter/bomber

Power plant

One 1,360-hp (1015-kW) Allison V-1710-81 liquid-cooled 12 cylinder vee piston engine

Performance

Maximum Speed:

378 mph (609km/h) at 10,500ft (3210 m)

Climb to 15,000 ft (4590m): 6 min 42 sec

Service Ceiling: 38,000ft (10973m)

Range: 240 miles (386km)

I believe this speed specification relates to the P-40N-1-CU model, which mounted only 4 MGs and had several other weight reductions. Only about 400 of this model were built (out of 5220 total P-40N).

Starting with P-40N-5-CU model, the MG armament was returned to six and wings were strengthened to accomodate heavier bombs. Gross weight rose to 8350 pounds and top speed dropped to 350. This effectively made the P-40N a fighter-bomber and it is so classed in WITP (earlier P-40 models were "fighters").

The only other speed that I can find is for the P-40N-15-CU, which had increased wing tanks for greater range (750 miles) and maximum speed reduced to 343 mph at 15,000 feet.

Lemurs did the aircraft in CHS and commented on the difficulty of making a few "standard" versions of aircraft that had many mods and sub-mods. I'd have to agree with his choice on this one.

Very good Don, all I have ever sen or read for the N model was the 378mph figure.

Well, I increased its speed in my South Pac mod. Now it seems I must decrease it again....

Well....after long consideration - The Roosevelt White House just decided the Army Air Force dosen't need any more fighter bombers.
furthermopre, the Curtis Aircraft Company and the war Department has been ordered (by Presidential Directive) to keep the P40N-1 Fighter in production by virtue of it's superior performance!

It's a good thing my White House Staffer's reads the aircraft industry reports!
The original P-40N-1 stands as the only mass production model!

Whew! That solved THAt ONE!!!!![:D][:D] (it's good to be the King!)
