It was a great series in its day.

But not again - it is too tedious. It needs something.

It needs the info to be available to the player at the press of hot keys.

This removes the tedium and takes advantage of computers to make wargaming better.

What about the V for Victory series?

There was a series of games callled the V for Victory series.

The developers improved the game engine and made the World at War series.

The 2 engines are the same except the World at War is much improved.

I've always wondered why Hasbro hasn't sold off the old wargame line that they got from Avalon Hill. It seems that they have no intention of ever publishing them and it is such a waste to let them gather dust. I would really enjoy a game of Russian Campaign on the pc. I long ago gave up any hope for computer Third Reich.[:(]

Computer Third Reich circa 1996 was terrific so long as you play a human in the same room - there was no email feature.

Well, lets see, you would have to get a hold of several people to even begin getting the rights to that.

Keith Zabaloui, Ed Rains and Larry Merkel but getting those three together in the same room to even talk would be a feet in its self. Hasbro has no rights to it anymore.

But good luck even finding a couple of those people. Oh, and I am sure the source code is dead dead dead.

It would be easier to just start over than try and reserct that stuff.

Definately too much nostalgia going on here [;)] There's just way too many good games around, and new ones in development, to think about games past IMHO. Talonsoft stuff excepted, maybe![sm=00000280.gif]

Tedious? BS (in my humble opinion of course [:D]) I had a couple of PBEMs of Stalingrad a year ago, and found nothing tedious about the gameplay. It's a shame that no wargame since have incorporated such a fine supply and C&C -system the series had and WEGO.

“Tedious” is perhaps the wrong word. My point, as always, is that we ought to make use of computers to make better wargames.

I really enjoyed the World At War series but the large scenarios took tooooooo loooong to play any one turn!

It is only in hind-site that I realise why they took so long to play - it took a while to locate the required information.

In Uncommon Valour and War in The Pacific, we have lists and in Battles in Normandy and Battles in Italy we have hot keys – the information can be located easily.

It takes the tedium out of finding the information.

There were a couple of key features in VFV and WaW that were very good - specifically being able to just select pieces of one unit and clear the rest of your units off the screen. In playing the Tiller games it is almost impossible not to mix up units, particularly the AT or AA units.

The closest you can come to a pc Third Reich is BattleFront's Strategic Command. SC2 is currently in development but the original is available and can be digital downloaded. The price is right at 25 bucks!

I bought SC a few years ago and it was fairly good, but not Third Reich. I am waiting to see what comes of SC2.

Been watching that one for months; but going to wait until the inevitable patch cycle is complete. Seems like it's not safe to buy any game until it has been released for around six months anymore.

Well having played AGW for a week, I am glad I made the purchase now. However, the AI most definately needs more work, so I can understand people who want to wait for an update or two. Also, the interface is a bit clunky, but if you played RGW then you will be familiar with it.

Whether you buy it now, or delay, the end result will be an enjoyable experience as the scenarios will be a throw back to your boardgaming days.

I bought RGW awhile back and I agree that the interface was a bit clunky but certainly manageable. I will almost certainly get AGW in a few months but I'm sorta happy playing RTW: BI for now. Maybe in a few months BI will be a solid game.[;)]

I'd have to say AGW is easier to play with the same outcomes. Sometimes adding all that complexity doesn't change the total outcome of the game whatsoever, just more to read and comprehend. AGW gets down to brass tactics and strategy, like the good ole Avalon Hill games of the 60's did, before people got the wise idea to make them more complex, but, really didn't change much other than that.

It's a $30 game at NWS, I don't think it will break you like SOME GAMES that are sold VERY NEAR here can and will do sometimes. hehe

And there's the rub. They are board games made for computer. The information is displayed just the same as for board games. Finding the information is difficult and therefore play is tedious.

With my regrets to Ron, that's the only thing holding me off AGW. Look, in 2005 to scroll the map, you move the cursor to the edge of the screen and to zoom you wheel or press a simple key.

Ron has so much potential on offer and as a gentleman really helped me getting his older game Smolensk going once but he just isn't delivering the interface that today's computers can allow. Regrettably I feel he's stuck with UI code of DOS days.

Very nice maps Ron and beautiful - if not benchmark unit counters in terms of information you supply but IMHO a monster of an effort required to play anything with them.

With respect Joe, we'll just have to agree to disagree, becase I find the information displayed on the counters, the 2 status screens, and the status bar more than sufficient to prevent the tedious play that you believe is present.....
