Hello everyone, the v1.2.14 limited public beta is now available in the Members' Club. You can install this right over the v1.2.13 beta. Here are the incremental changes since v1.2.13.

==================================
v1.2.14 Change List (October 14, 2005)
==================================

Changes 1.2.13->1.214
--------------------

* AI Treaty evaluation problem fixed, needs testing on various treaty types
* AI now checks for self-redundancy with treaties
* Increased color saturation for nation shading on strategic map, feedback appreciated
* Slightly decreased protectorate troop levies

Reiryc -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 1:16:01 AM)

New colors are pretty good except for france... I think it's a bit too dark. Otherwise there is a good contrast now.

Reg Pither -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 2:57:37 AM)

I think all the colours are a bit too startling at the moment, to be honest. They are certainly a lot clearer than the old colours, but just a bit too bold, IMHO.

And is there no Undo for development mistakes? [:(]

Not yet. I purposely didn't add it to the backspace key as there are a class of orders that can be undone in any sequence, and development orders are among them. In the next patch I hope to add an undo for development and perhaps build orders with the advantage that -- unlike movement orders -- these can be undone at any time, in any sequence.

Doobious -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 3:31:38 AM)

Very nice! [:D]

Thank you for the hard work.

Hakkapeliitta -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 11:08:35 AM)

I like the new colors. Map has much clearer/sharper outlook to it than before. Although "selected province" - color is maybe little too close to "seen province" - color for russia, when playing Sweden?

Barrold -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 11:40:48 AM)

I like the colors as well and if they're to be tweaked I would not mute them much. Britain's protectorates might be a bit pink, but overall the bolder colors make me happy.

JavaJoe -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 4:07:35 PM)

Not that I expected it to work, but this patch has the exact same effect.

Stops loading and gives a plato error when the load bar hits the p in copyright.

Just a ping to know I'm still here [:)]

Kipper -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 4:10:21 PM)

I really object to the new colors onthe map... the new colours take away the period feel of the original map, are just too garish and bright. Can we have an option to revert to the original please?

It just goes to show that you can't please everybody...!!!

Kipper

Barrold -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 4:31:31 PM)

On second thought, the British protectorate is fine. It was next to Prussia's and it was late. I could see the colors being toned down just a tiny bit, but not much since I wasn't into the "period piece" aspect of the orginal map though. C'est la vie.

Kipper -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 5:09:41 PM)

How on earth are they going to please all of us :-)

Moltke71 -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 5:49:29 PM)

For the record, I like the new colors.

I've put together a patch that reverts to the old colors.

Link to COG Old Colors

The patch should work over 1.2x. Just copy the few files in the patch over the corresponding game files.

If you'd like to make your own color patch, the map colors are specified in the file players2.txt which is found either in Data/, for the main scenario, or in the appropriate Scenario folder if you are playing a scenario. Open players2.txt in a spreadsheet program, such as Excel. The numbers in the columns Red, Green, and Blue give the red, green, and blue components to each nation's map shading color. When I get a chance I'll try to put together a color patch that is an intermediate saturation between the new and old colors.

Suvorov928 -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 6:20:47 PM)

I think the new colors are great. I can easily distinguish between the countries and who is a protectorate of who, at one glance. I don't really need the old colors to "get into" the period of the game.

Glad you fixed the treaty bug as well. That was really ticking me off. I will be playing this a lot this weekend and if I see anything, I will post about it.

Uncle_Joe -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/15/2005 9:59:00 PM)

I like the new colors as well. It makes it much easier to see who has influence where.

TheBlackhorse -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/16/2005 2:30:05 AM)

New colors are great.

Grand_Armee -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/16/2005 4:01:47 AM)

The new colors really shock you at first, but I'm getting accustomed to them easily enough. Britain being more red than the previous pink gives more historical feel. LOL...but the you find yourself wanting the Austrians to be white. I'll adjust.

Treaties seems to be working just fine, and I haven't noticed any other glitches.

The bigger minors are still pretty big. I'm doing Prussia in the 1796 scenario and just got Saxony as a protectorate in 1802 with 126K troops. Prussia only has 300K if you exclude garrisoned militia.

I know the AI is accustomed to sending thousands to Moscow without a loaf of bread between them, but your average player prefers to have an army built on experience and not mass.

Still, it keeps getting better, guys.

Definately! [;)] I always associate Austria with white whenever I play Napoleonic games. Its not a big deal to me either way though.

Russian Guard -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/19/2005 3:20:44 AM)

Downloaded the beta tonight. First thing I did was then download the original colors patch, and thanks for creating that. I don't care for the bright color scheme at all.

That's is going to be one of those love it-hate it things [;)] I do think a "somewhere in the middle" color scheme might be the trick.

So far no problems overall, beyond things already reported elsewhere by others.

Personally I like the old colors too, but with a more saturated Austrian color: the only difficulty with the old colors for my eyes was in distinguishing Spanish protectorates from Austria protectorates.

When I get around to it I'll average the two color schemes and put that up as a new patch.

Naomi -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/20/2005 5:20:24 AM)

I am concerned more about the colour of the infrastructure buttons of the provinces, that is a bit too dark. The national-territories colour is fine, although dizzily sharp at first sight. Btw, is there a way to make the first song - the new one - repetitive? (I have expected more to be added to the pack.)

It looks too dark on one of my monitors but on the others they look alright -- we find a lot of color balancing really varies from monitor to monitor. The graphics you mention (for province development) are found in Gfx/CityDevB.pcx and Gfx/CityDevB2.pcx. Here are two new versions of those lightened by 20% that you can copy over the dark versions. Lightening them by 20% makes them look washed out, in my opinion, but they are noticeably lighter now.

Which file represents the original version? Excuse me for my noobishness. [sm=00000506.gif]

elmo3 -> RE: v1.2.14 Limited Beta Posted (10/28/2005 4:18:26 AM)

Sorry, no time to really do any beta testing but FWIW the new colors look good to me.

Both files are needed to restore to the original version.
