Over 260 bombers with 27 A62 escots on port attack. US defence 29 Wildcats.

What is the outcome? 15 Zeroes shot down, as well as 23 bombers, for the exchange of 2 Wildcats.

Japanese pilots were still those 80-90 exp veterans. US squadrons suffered huge losses during previous few days.

I am at complete loss explaining what happened. The bombers were set at 9000 and 15000 feet. Fighters at 17000. Why have fighters got massacred? Should I set different altitude? US attacks at my TF covered by 140 fighter CAP ended in 2-1 fighter to fighter kill ratio in favour of japanese, and the US fighters were outnumbered like 6-1. Either computer controlled side has some bonuses or I do something terribly wrong [&:]

Are you playing on Very Hard AI difficulty?

shoevarek -> RE: Air strikes fighter cover (10/16/2005 8:43:40 AM)

No, It is set to historic difficulty. For some reason I get some bad dice rolls. US fighters still loose but it is just because I have huge local air superiority. The worst thing is that those are my best pilots that perform so badly. I have some unskilled pilots in my squadrons but those ones are not the ones that die. The pilots are generally under 10 points of fatigue, with good morale. Should I use different altitude?

Tankerace -> RE: Air strikes fighter cover (10/16/2005 8:46:08 AM)

I think the altitude is ok, I think part of it is 1) there were more Wildats than Zeroes, and 2) Some Wildcats could pounce on the bombers at 9,000. Maybe have some Zekes come in at 17,000, and some at 12,000, so your bombers at 9,000 aren't too exposed. Just what I'd do.

shoevarek -> RE: Air strikes fighter cover (10/16/2005 9:00:30 AM)

Good idea. Maybe that way the bombers will be better protected and the hight cover fighters will support the low level cover. Although my pilot training program goes pretty well I am doomed if losses continue to be so high.

Are you sure you had your fighters on escort and not on port attack?

shoevarek -> RE: Air strikes fighter cover (10/16/2005 11:06:33 AM)

Yes, they were set to escort. After I divided escort fighters to low and high altitude they faught much better. Still Wildcats scored quite a lot of kills. I must say I would trade my A6 for AI Wildcats if I could. They seem much more effective. Seems that the time of killer Zeroes has ended [X(]

How many of those Wildcats were damaged? They are much more durable than Zeros and will take fewer losses unless badly outnumbered. Also, check how many Wildcats were lost to ops losses. Some of the damaged Wildcats come up as ops losses.

Wait a second - i thought it didn't matter what altitude you set your fighters at when they are escorting bombers - they always get set to 3000 feet over the bombers. Unless you are conducting a concurrent sweep or possibly LRCAP rather than an escort, it shouldn't matter. The alt setting for the fighters would only apply to the CAP at the fighters' base.

Better more aggressive leaders, Ground-based Radar, shorter range, very slight number advantage, experienced pilots. All these things can add up. Throw in an extra advantageous roll and a well led Bounce attack on the escort and the Zero's could find themselves in trouble...

Hard to say what happened.
