Warfare1 -> ** People flee U.S. city as dam buckles ** (10/18/2005 11:01:51 PM)

Info here:

A century-old wooden dam in Massachusetts could rip apart at any time, sending a two-metre wave of water roaring through a city of 50,000.

Officials in the city of Taunton, about 65 kilometres south of Boston along the Mill River, have ordered thousands of people to leave their homes and closed schools and highways.

They said Tuesday that the dam upstream had deteriorated overnight, buckling and losing timbers as the reservoir behind it rose quickly after heavy rains that have flooded much of the U.S. Northeast in the past week.

Century old wooden dam .....
Does kinda beg the question, didn't ever consider replacing it with something that, huh, stands up to time and water a little better than wood ?

It is New England though.... Lived there for 4 years. Beautiful area, but somethings don't always make sense.

The dam is privately owned by a mill.

It will be intersting to follow who will be footing the bill to upgrade the dam, as it certainly will with the national news coverage.

Hi :)

Thanks for the concern, but no, I don't live in the city in question.

Just saw the headline and thought I would post the info.

The curious thing is that the dam broke once before in 1968. It seems that not much has been done to get 'er fixed properly.

Hope this will be the wake-up call they need...[:-]

Cubs suck!

[:D][;)]

While I'd love for the sox to win, I'm happy as heck just to be in the show. Still won't matter though, the dubs are and always be the darling of chicago baseball. [:@]

Don't I know it Reiryc [:D]

I might as well enjoy it, as it most likely will be the only WS I will see in Chicago in my lifetime.

To bad the real sox fans will not be there, I see tickets going for upper deck for over $700.

Yeah bugs me too...

I tried to get tickets online as soon as they went on sale. Nothing.... I think there was what? 4k available to the general public? [8|]

I would have jumped on the "get season tickts for 2006 and get guaranteed WS tickets" deal, but since I now live by St Louis, it just isn't an option.

Oh well, I guess the couch will be more comfortable.... atleast that's the BS I keep telling myself to remain contented.
