Marc -> Difference between Engineers and IJA Engineer Squad? (10/21/2005 12:44:31 AM)

Can somebody tell me the difference between Engineers and IJA Engineer Squads?

My understanding is Engineers are non combat units and IJA Engineer Squads are front line units (bunker killer...)
But treats the game these units differently.

Marc

Both perform construction. Only one will engage in offensive combat and can reduce fortifications.

Hi Marc,

My understanding is as you say the IJA Eng squads also act as combat engineers and aid the ability to reduce enemy fortifications.

ENG squads purely act as base enginers to increase fortifactions and repair/expand the base.

Steven

Of course, none of this prevents me from sending my construction battalions into the front lines!

There are no rear echelon jobs in my Imperial Japanese Army!! :)

I'm glad I'm not in esteban's army. I'd hate to have to fight with a pen. Worse could be throwing crates of bananas as arty support.

The pen is mightier than the sword [:D]

Combat engineers (all nations) do not perform construction. Only normal engineers are able to do this. Combat engineers are only good for reducing forts!

You sure on that K?

From what I see IJA Engineer squads are included in the engineers tally at a base.

Steven

Yes, created an engineer regiment with only combat engineers and support squads. Ordered them to construct, they did nothing. The construction abilities of squads seem to be somehow related to their database slot (251).

Oddly there seems to be construction work done, when a unit has both motorized support squads (253) and combat engineers included in its OOB (have you ever noticed the construction speed when Indian tank brigades are present?).

Interesting. I will examine this closer myself.

Cheers,

Kereguelen is right. Combat engineers (Engineer Squads) don't do construction even when they are listed in number of engineers in base. They do have assault value and can reduce fortifications. Engineers (without squad after the name) do the construction, but in combat they are treated like second line troops and don't have assault value. They don't, IMHO; reduce forts in combat.

Hi Sardaukar,

Yes I know that base engineers do not reduce fortifications but always assumed combat engineers added to base construction.

The proofs are Japanese Mongolian Cavalry divisions:

They have IJA engineers squads only (none pure engineers). In bases with mon. cav. division nothing will be constructed.

Yes, amazing game !! I don't think there are many as complex games as this. I was bit surprised myself about combat engineers not constructing anything. Some of the stuff makes one wonder if they are bugs or WAD (working as designed) [:D]. But I can live with this one, it's important detail for scenario designers to remember, though.

Do combat engineers repair damage on airfields & ports ?

Terminus -> RE: Difference between Engineers and IJA Engineer Squad? (10/21/2005 3:58:04 PM)

Nope... Combat engineers are for blowing stuff up, not for repairing it.

Wow! What a good job to have![8D]

Charles2222 -> RE: Difference between Engineers and IJA Engineer Squad? (10/22/2005 9:27:16 AM)

It's pretty funny to me, because I always took the useless engineers to places to build things and repair, simply for the reason that their not having any assault points would make them usless otherwise. And then the combat variety I knew would reduce forts, plus they have some handy assault values, so naturally they didn't go for useless base building and such. I guess I just had more then my share of useless engineers so that the roles never got crossed up, even being ignorant of how they working in their entirety.

Sardaukar -> RE: Difference between Engineers and IJA Engineer Squad? (10/22/2005 1:59:30 PM)

If Combat Engineers will build fort levels too, that'd be a good way to reduce base building rate by removing Engineers from most units and leave them only into specialized construction units and base forces.
