hosho -> what is the best way to eliminate pt boats??? (10/27/2005 1:28:49 PM)

what is the best way to get rid of these little pests? i `ve tried night bombardment of port moresby with 2 kongos, 3ca, 1 cl and 14 dds. lost a cl and 3dd, (both ca and 2 dds received a torpedo but managed to get home to thursday island ) while sinking 5 pts [:@] a few days later i tried to clear the pt pests with a 7 dd tf set to naval attack and had some luck (4 pts sunk negligible damage to my tf) but they seem to be multiplying at impressively high rate and recent attacks haven`t shown promissing resluts [:(] i don`t have the air supremacy over port m so calling the kido butai is not an option. tried night port attack with bettys but nooo results. any suggestions gentleman?

p.s. the reason for bombarding of port m are 2 criplled bbs and heavily damaged uss enterprise [:D] so i would like to find the way to finish them for good.

Airplanes, especially fighter bombers set to attack at 100 ft. Altitudes other than that they ignore PT boats and barges.

Just beware if enemy has strong fighter presence around. That can hurt your air units since they are in disadvantage flying that low. And when set on Naval Attack at 100 ft, they can "accidentally" attack enemy heavy ships like CAs and BBs..with bad results sometimes. Flak from those can be bad.

IMO PT boats are way too tough to kill, ok they are dead with one hit but finding and attacking the little pests is a real problem especially if your opp uses them offensively.

One of my pet hates , even as allies i only ever use them defensively or as a counter attack force in case of landings, as i believe them to be too powerful if used to cover your own attacks. thier immunity to a/c is daft imo.

Japanese dive bombers swat them when flying Naval Search, it seems..at least AI does it to my PT boats...[:D] Could be Kates too.

Destroyers are my weapon of choice... after all, their first name was "torpedo boat destroyers"

I have seen fighters or small boats used effectively. Anything with a 3" gun or bigger and a little manuverability can be very effective. If your worried about CAP you can always use junk fighters likes Oscars or Nates. Float fighters work well too.

Has anyone used subs on them?

It seems that PG/PCs can be useful against PTs, especially in the early phase of the game.(leader of japanese TF have rating 49/39) Now my boats have exp almost 60:).... of course, this have to be tested more... This was copied from my AAR against Andy Mac.

And welcome, one more Croat here on the forum! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think a sub firing torpedos at a PT boat is like trying to shoot a horsefly out of the air with a hunting rifle.

" Has anyone used subs on them? "

I did have a british MTB torpedoed by a Nell...

pauk -> RE: what is the best way to eliminate pt boats??? (10/28/2005 2:47:47 PM)

was it single PT flotilla (only PTs in fleet) or perhaps this PT tf was reinforced with dd or something like that?

This used to happen and was considered a bug. It was eliminated some time ago.

I would think that torps would be quite useless, but was wondering about the surface guns on a sub.

SGT Swanson -> RE: what is the best way to eliminate pt boats??? (10/29/2005 12:03:27 AM)

Once on the surface, a sub is nothing more than a long skinny boat. The PTs should treat it as such.

I did have a PT boat hit at Pearl Harbor by an 800 kg bomb.......... toothpicks.[X(]

By the way, that was the only ship known to have sunk that day.[:@] I don't think "sunk" is the right word though.[:D]

Ram them; banzai!!

SlaughtermeyerIII -> RE: what is the best way to eliminate pt boats??? (10/29/2005 8:34:10 PM)

I've had several of my PT boats sunk while anchored in Manila when my opponent decided to use KB to hit Manila in a port attack instead of Pearl on the first turn.

I sicked 7 PT's on my opponent's Japanese landing force at Vigan. The first one was sunk by ONE 5in shell, and the next one took almost 20 shells to put under...

The end result was 6 PT's sunk for two torpedo hits on a Japanese destroyer, which defiantly sailed away afterwards. To add insult to injury, she sailed right past one of my submarines, who fired at her, but (obviously) the torpedoes failed to explode.

bradfordkay -> RE: what is the best way to eliminate pt boats??? (10/29/2005 8:41:38 PM)

The torpedoed MTB was in a task force of one TK (or was it an AK, I don't fully recall) and all the MTBs out of Hong Kong (CHS). I was sending them to Brunei and they were caught by Nells out of Cam Ranh Bay. The TK was there to make sure that the MTBs had the fuel to make it.

SlaughtermeyerIII -> RE: what is the best way to eliminate pt boats??? (10/29/2005 8:55:43 PM)

Maybe MTB boats are not considered to be PT boats by the program? Were MTB boats historically larger than PT boats? Maybe there's historical justification to allow them to be bombed if they are bigger.

bradfordkay -> RE: what is the best way to eliminate pt boats??? (10/29/2005 9:11:09 PM)

I just checked my Jane's, and the British MTBs ran from 75' to 117', but none had a draft deeper than 5 1/2 feet. Strangely, the one with the deepest draft was a model whose length was only in the upper seventy foot range. US PTs generally had a draft of around five feet.

In my games against the AI I found PTs to be great at attacking invasion fleets. I have had far less luck against a human opponent. I think their effectiveness may be over rated.
