jbourgo@pconline.com -> Help - Weapons Encyclopedia (11/5/2005 5:17:25 AM)

I am a sight impaired user. In order for me to use a standard Windows box, I use special software called ZoomText that magnifies the desktop. ZoomText works well with most applications. Games, however, are an issue because of the intense video requirements.

Years ago, I played SP for DOS. I was never able to make the migration to Windows because of video issues. Recently I purchased a Mac 23” HD display, which has changed things considerably. You are right to wonder why it took me so long considering I am in IT and should therefore know better.

At any rate, I can now play SPWaW. I use the zoom features and at times a magnifying glass. The only real difficult is dealing with the more complicated text based screens.

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the weapons encyclopedia in separate format using an open format, e.g. text or HTML?

Don't think anyone's ever done something like this, considering what a HUGE undertaking it would be...

The closest you will get to what you are after is:

http://worldatwar.clone.cz/encyclopedia/

This though only goes to v7.1

Thank you both very much.

This site works well with my software. It may not be up to date, but it gets me much closer than I was before. The rest is simply time and I have plenty of that now that winter has begun in Minnesota.

Well, I still have the weekend ahead of me and there is so much to read and think about .... :)

Individual encyclopedia texts can be found in the ENC directory in the game. They are in no particular order; the enc file number corresponds to the picture number for each unit. Many of the pictures were assigned numbers corresponding to the Nation OOB number, therefore, for example, one hundred of the British units are numbered from 7700 to 7799. Additional British unit descriptions will be found outside this range. Also, many enc files are missing. They have not been typed out.

It would be nice if there was a SPWaW Wiki (think wikipedia). The whole encyclopedia from the game could be translated and expanded. You could have tactics sections and historical articles. You could have reviews of actual combat units and their advantages/disadvanatges. It's a little work, but with the SPWaW community being so strong I think it could turn out pretty cool since anyone could edit and add on.

I know how to setup a Wiki and I run a couple for work, I just have no place to host a non-work related one. It's an interesting idea at least.

Sounds like a fantastic idea - really useful resource if someone's willing to do the work.
