Spectra -> Purpose of the Akitsushima class?? (11/6/2005 4:55:02 PM)

Just received my newest AV to the Japanese fleet..
Only to discover it has a A/C capacity of 1/0.

What the heck is the purpose of an AV ship with a capacity of 1 (or is it 0?). Other than as a potential target, being worth 20 VPs and all... Its got some AA value, but its hardly a floating flak battery, but it doesn't do much of anything else either...

Thoughts, ideas??

Seaplane tender (land based). It provides 18 (or is it 24?) points of av support for seaplanes only (you will see a ###+(18) or some such in the bases av support space.

Park it in any friendly base or dot hex and you can base Float Planes or Sea Planes there. You need supplies, but you don't need any aviation support (or any LCU of any kind at all) or even an airbase (a 0(0) is good). The capacity will show up on the base information screen as aviation support, like this: "0+10" (or however many it is).

Your opponent will be able to see this, it will show up as an airbase symbol on the map. It's something to think about, how far forward you will risk doing this, and how much help you will give to the hapless AV. It is certainly a juicy target.

If you have no LCU in the hex, a sub-transported infanty raid could easily destroy your a/c unit if you are using an atoll.

Welcome to the world of the allied player. We get lots of the floating seaplane filling stations. They actually do come in quite handy when you want to run seaplanes from a base, but don't want to spend aviation support unit points maintaining them.

Seaplane tenders are useful, because you can park one there, and not "waste" av-support from your Base Force on the seaplanes. If it's a 30 point BF and you don't have an AV there, you can fly 18 combat aircraft and 12 seaplanes. But with the AV, you can fly the 12 seaplanes plus 30 combat aircraft.

AVs for either side, are nice. Just make sure you don't park them where a bombardment group can come calling; it gets a little messy.
