Manila is a source of VP , good base for subs hunting my crucial convoys –when I move them fattest –and valuable BBs supporting invasion.
It is difficult to strike hard manila ships without commiting a lot of forces to Borneo and Celebes early.

Exactly as I wanted losses of allies side should be high
My losses only 3 planes together with 8 over singapore means that I realized strategy with losses of only 11 pilots of KB – fully acceptable in comparison of average PH attack – especially when result forces player to strike once more

Here is my error – I used old pbem file and did not check everything – my fighter sqns were ugrading to Zero this turn so CAP was at 0 lvl –result-many bomber attack on small KB –hopefully single planes were unsuccesful – this is certaily my error but all ended good – this TF was to cut escape route from PI and cover 1 light bombarment TF at Tarankan – its CAP failed – let’s imagine coordination failed as it was often during war and what never brings problems in WITP to Supreme commander. coup de grace to de ryuther + marblehead + 3 SS in Manila + DDs
cleaning part of operation is going to the end
enemy lost about 20 subs and at least 5 are out of action in ports so my valuable, undefended mostly, transports are safe

Sneer -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/17/2005 3:03:09 PM)

4th day of struggle
cleaning of enemy naval forces is almost finished - footholds strong - offensive movement in progress
2 axis of counterattack observed (at Canton and at Songhla)
at canton to hold HK invasion and at Songhla to attack my major air base closing malaya straits
- possible 1 more in China but need to check it with recon
These options are quite obvious at allies opening - waiting for Raver to show more
My air force needs resting after 4 days of constant action

DEI is a shooting range now -nowhere to hide - nowhere to run.
almost no action from uk & us air force
either Raver conserves them for a massive strike or it is beeing withdrawn from fight area
4 day balance from official data
aircrafts lost
178 allied vs 110 Japan (about 30 carrier based)
ships
Japan 4 for 22 points
Allied 85 for 1012 points (2BB,7CL,21DD,27SS,2PG,9PT,3ML,2MSW,1AV,1TK,1AP,9AK)
too early to count land forces and terrain

What's Raver doing?? Those Dutch subs should have been out at sea and hunting for Japanese transports! (They're far more effective than the American subs at this point.)

Sneer -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/18/2005 1:20:22 AM)

soerabaja was blitzed by KB in 2nd turn
BTW 2-3 subs are damaged at beginning of game

Sneer -> positive surprise (11/18/2005 1:34:05 PM)

why ?
cos I managed to score quite a lot of ships considering main part of cleaning is over
all 5 MLs in DEI are sunk so no mine threat to invasion forces
PT boats decimated
only 5-6 subs in whole area estimated
almost no a/c activity
on Java Raver doesn't try to attack my carrier force and wait for transports
sb could ask why attack soerabaja so long- to prevent any resource transport out of DEi is the answer.
What I can't destroy will escape fast. in my last PBEM I captured full magazines of goods

Sneer -> phase one finished (11/18/2005 5:53:38 PM)

I'm quite happy about result of 5-day phase one
no threat to invasion places
army should be able to move fast to its objectives
naval forces finished job almost without losses
heaviest duty was on air forces - managed to acomplish goals but losses are higher then expected.

what was better then expected ? - certainly situation on luzon is very good - I managed to cut off west part of PI army - 2 divisions and 4 base forces will not take part in defence of Clark and Manila it means I should have enough superiority to finish them fast
almost all light forces are non-existent in DEI - 2BB,7CL,21-24DDs,27 SS and so on
Houston escaped and barely anything else
also shipping fleet was badly hit so Raver should be unable to move resources out of DEI

what was worse ? - follow movement bug in Hong Kong - after 5 day I need to start again
high losses in Kates sqns -30

He's not going to be invited to any IO or Asiatic fleet reunions, that's for sure.

Is Raver raving mad? Must be to agree to this fantasy![:D] Looking at that first turn is brutal. Talk about taking advantage of the gamer fore knowledge. Have fun Sneer ' cause Raver sure can't be having any.[;)]

why fantasy
BTW there is nothing to agree [:D]
fore knowledge ? - I don't agree with this
equally divided land forces and concenterated them on 2 most important objectives. same with KB - Singapore is main base of RN in theater adequate with Manila - well known facts - destruction was severe as with no attack on PH I could surprise whole time zone of DEI.
landing sites were chosen aggressively but remind they were covered by BB TF and carriers so no risk taken as well as land air was struck suprisingly
only gamer move was to land so many units at once in one place that's all - I didn't used extended movement to take any base out of reasonable reach - inf units reached cagayen on day 4 cos they were crossing PI and I did not want to violate this rule
san marcelino landing is only reasonable choice after river shock attack rule Mersing is level 5 airfield
so what is the problem
If sb assume PH attack was reasonable why Manila and singapore are not ?

BTW Wake isl invasion was not attacked by Raver
BTW everybody counts japanese divisions and carriers - how to surprise player who spend so many time on game

last thing about fore gamers- how many times allies used force Z to strike invasion on Malaya in AARs available - knowledge about nell/betty is fore running - nobody throws 2 BB away - this is fore play

Capt. Harlock -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/18/2005 10:22:13 PM)

Sneer does seem to be playing reasonably fairly, with one possible exception. Total surprise throughout should not be possible. The British were aware when the Japanese troop convoys put to sea, and it seems logical they would have alerted the Free Dutch.

Sneer -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/18/2005 10:37:09 PM)

yes and no
malaya invasion was a surprise
clark field was cought by surprise even many hours after PH

j campbell -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 12:04:16 AM)

The primary amount of damage was done by the CV aircraft and it would be reasonable to assume - unless they were spotted beforehand that they should have equivilant success at Manila harbor or Singapore harbor as at PH. I am not an expert on AA defenses and harbor depths at these locations but the results do not seem to be so unrealistic as to be unbelievable.

Note: i rarely see people opt for the Dec. 8 historical start in pbem. i suspect it is because the japanese player (imo) wants to gamble that he can make a better first turn move than was historical. We all know that the Allied players have a major adv in historical play (outside china-where it appears the japanese are abit stronger than expected). they can usually save the bulk of the singapore and manila navies-often merging them with US naval forces later. the command and coordination of ABCD forces is extremely efficient etc etc.

i am not complaining abiut the game in any way i just think an option to blast manila/ singapore over PH should be possible- One has to wonder- If the Japanese had not attacked PH what targets would the japanese Cv attacked instead?

Sneer -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 1:29:43 AM)

IRL after 3 days at 10 DEC allies lost 5 BB
it is extremaly difficult up to almost imposibble to sink more capital ships anyway as sinking 3 BB at PH is rather difficult then easy and no allied player will give Force Z freely.
Japan decides to start to better distribute forces to overcome this problem
5 BB means 1000 VP - I scored 1150 VP for ships in 5 days - very similar result.
Unless ground units deployment don't suit me I would strongly prefer playing Dec 8 scenario as it is best start for Japan

KDonovan -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 3:31:46 AM)

5 battleships?....i can only count 4 (oklahoma, arizona, PoW, Repulse) surely you can't count Utah

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 3:49:44 AM)

My point is primarily with the first move bonus. It was included to allow KB to reach PH on turn 1 within the games mechanics. Should not have been given to any other TF except the Malaya invasion TF, yet ALL IJ TFs can sprint around and move basically a weeks steaming in one day. This results in all sorts exploitation by players.

Perhaps the best thing is to design a scenario much like Pry's Scen 16, but have only the historical moves plotted on turn 1 so PH can still happen differently and the Malaya invasion TF can be air attacked by the few aircraft the Allies have available (given the awareness of the Allies to this convoy and the time difference from PH). Anything else on the first turn is really out there in my book.

Capt. Harlock -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 5:36:45 AM)

quote:

clark field was cought by surprise even many hours after PH

The disaster at Clark Field was not surprise: it was huge luck for the Japanese. Clark Field was alerted, and put fighters and patrol planes in the air. But the Japanese strike was delayed, and the american planes found nothing, and so returned to refuel. When the Japanese bombers finally did arrive, the radar operator was literally out to lunch!

j campbell -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 5:39:42 AM)

ron,

Here is the problem - the task forces do not steam that distance in 1 day- KB did not do it in real life and neither does it in the game. what is simulated is the UNDETECTED movement of a task force prior to hostilities. what a non historical japanese opening does is assume that the allied forces miss all the japanese task forces (ie. they are all surprise attacks-what are the odss -i don't know) and allows them advance deployment- they all left harbor (x) amount of days beofre landfall/air assault.

perhaps it would have been more "fair" to say you only get historical landings except 1 surprise movement of KB- either to peal or anywhere else of your choosing.

in game terms due to the increased probability of KB being spotted if it redeployed to the china sea for an imminent (?)assault on the singapore or manila ports one could play with surprise off and non historical start - or just do the dec 8 start.

I do doubt though that the allies would have pre-emptively striked KB had it redeployed north or west of the manila. they would have waited to be attacked but perhaps they would have been on alert.

just my thoughts but they seem valid enough.

Raverdave -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 7:38:04 AM)

Well once again I have to put up with months and months of getting my collective arse kicked all over the Pacific. *sigh* Regardless of what people think of the IJN surprise vonas in the opening move, Sneer has done a very good job of placing me between a rock and a hard place then hitting me with everything that he has got. Most of the forces on the Malay Peninsula have been split and cut off so I have no real hope of combining all of the allied forces there to mount a credible defence, same goes with the PI....this sneer fellow moves with speed.
I think that he is setting himself up for a move on Australia/NZ/Noumea or an attack on India.
Enjoy it while you can Sneer because come '43 I am going to be doinging some slapping of my own.

Sneer -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 11:40:35 AM)

I know Raver
Moreover Your kicking fun will be longer then mine
BTW when you looked at opponent you wantaed sb with nuts [:D]

Sneer -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 12:53:38 PM)

next day is almost boring in comparison to previous 5
as my forces are in phase 2 I don't expect too much excitment
nice result of Manila bombing and rabaul should be taken tomorrow
Cagayen taken today
as you may see air actions of allies forces are more sucessful - fortunately it is too late to hurt anything important

Sneer -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 4:47:54 PM)

I recognize speed bonus as a tool to correct initial deployment when you want another then historical opening - just keep convoy routes out enemy controlled space that's all

sven6345789 -> RE: Sneer vs Raver , Banzaiiii!!!! (11/19/2005 5:23:06 PM)

I am playing sneer in a pbem, me being allied; I do not really have a problem with japanese taskforces being spread out all over the DEI. If you take a look at what the allies got out of that area historically it isn't really that much. Most ships that sneer destroyed on turn one or two were historically sunk during naval engagements later on. Not to mention that the british actually reinforced singapore and Burma with troops, which ended in captivity.
He might as well make the most of the first year to get himself into the best position possible for the inevitable allied onslought starting in 1943. Stopping the US in the central pacific will be very dificult indeed. As much as i know, there was a game where China and Russia was occupied completely. Still, in 1944 the US was fighting close to japan. Loosing battles in China or India does not corrupt your timetable to get to the marianas.
problem is that the japanese player might just win an automatic victory before that.
