So , there really is no chance to counterattack this early. I also wait for the middle of 1943, when i get an advantage in carriers.

IMHO the American carriers can attack profitably if the following conditions are met:

1) Fewer than four fleet CV's in the Japanese TF (Don't mess with the KB Death Star!)
2) All American CV's have more than 30 fighters each.
3) Devastators have been upgraded to Avengers. (Not for attack, but the longer range is helpful for search.)
4) Escort ships with 40 mm AAA are present.

You are describing the conditions in August 1942 at the earliest...poor Raver is in March 1942... that's not a good time for the Allies to have ships on the high seas... [:(] [;)]

Great hunting gets even more intense
dispersing ships is great tactics against aerial attacks but not against CA hunting in the dark :-) - it is far easier sink few ships in the row than few from convoy
I counted 35 sunk ships since beginning of operation.
I'll do my best to increase this amount.
I hope I'll sink some more AP/TK as their loss shoul hurt Raver in short term
may be problematic as Kates numbers goes systematiclydown as well as sorties - I will not manage to go to base , refit and come back so efficiency of aerial attack will go lower

The loss of my AKs on their flight to the relative safety of the West Australian coast line is disturbing but far better than having ALL of them sunk at anchor at Karachi as would no doubt happen in the near future.

I wish that I had something to use against Sneer, but there is no way that the US CVs could get to that side of the map in time, and the RN CVs have been moved to a northern port to effect repairs[:(]

I could send the RN BBs to the rescue but I am not that foolish to send my Queens of the sea anywhere without air support, and so I shall continue to endure.

My "turn" against PzB taught me that sending ships down the Indian Ocean was a bad thing. Unfortunately, you are learning the same. However, I also learned in that game that it is absolutely, direly necessary to have a surface force available to defend the bases that are critical. I lost Karachi because I didn't have enough surface ships, not because of the KB. I was able to keep a strong CAP in place until PzB sank my surface forces and could bombard at will. With the RN BBs in Northern Australia you have nothing to keep Sneer from closing your coastal bases in India. Also, you will find it equally hard to protect the Brit BBs in Northern Oz - maybe harder than in India. In Sneer's position I'd have the main KB heading to the Northern Oz ports at this very moment...[sm=00000622.gif]

Good luck!

Sneer -> Great hunting west of Batavia finished (12/28/2005 5:11:53 PM)

ok operation officially finished
93 confirmed sunk ships - 8 TK included together with 30+ sunk by now may make supplying distant operations a bit difficult
looks like my APD were quite successfull in high sees commerce raiding [:D]
I think action will get more intense as india is in play again

True -- but the discussion was about when Raver could counterattack. He is thinking of Spring '43 at the earliest, while I'm saying that it could happen before the start of Winter in '42. (Never hurts to keep an enemy off balance.)

Correct, i will always be looking for a chance to snipe at Sneer, but first I must have halfway decent intel as to where his CVs are before I can even think about trying anything. What looks like a good opportunity to me should also be apparent to sneer hence the need for great care.

Hmmm............well if he really wants to send KB against Kararchi then I wouild welcome that, I still have a halfway decent airfarce and feel that any move from seaward would give me more opportunitys then it is worth for Sneer. Why would one risk KB that far north when the land combat is going so well? Pity i didn't know about the risk in sending the AKs south, though I guess that it could have been guessed at if I was in Sneer's place. Still better that they go down at sea, rather than bottled up in port like rats.[;)]

Sneer -> RE: Great hunting west of Batavia (12/29/2005 10:12:17 AM)

There was not immiediate risk for fleet at Karachi right now
second we agreed to adjust India campaign
third it is a best task for us cv early war to cover such operation

few more ships are reported sunk from earlier damages
As you could see I get quite heavy a/c losses but it is price paid for attempt of closing china industry

I'm doing my best but I feel I'm loosing momentum
2 convoys found in south east corner of map - nice to know all conwoys will take a month longer to reach destination - together with loss of transports it should stretch a bit transport capacity
number of raid's victims moved to 97:-)
supply level reached 2.5 mln [:D] and moves up steadily
soon there will be no targets in China for my sally's[8D]
I'll publish few screenshot in nearest future

Sneer -> 2nd carrier battle! (12/29/2005 1:10:15 PM)

when I saw carriers reacting to enemy carriers I thought I lost half of my mini KB and it was like heart attack - My Tf consisted of Zuiho,Shoho,Hosho +3 DD only!!!
conclusion was US CV are on place even if I guessed Raver will not do it.
To my surprise it was RN TF - it seems previous damages were small and they attacked me once more.
cap was set to 100% as sorties were low and carriers were refuelling that turn.
all attacking swordfishes were shot down and my small amount of kates that survived 2 weeks of flying attacked fircely enemy
Both Hermes and Indomitable were hit once however as expected I lost most of my kates (strike was unescorted).
again marginal victory for Japan. 2 BB CA and CLAA noticed in TF

Raverdave -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/29/2005 2:20:30 PM)

I had hoped to catch his mini KB TF with it's ammo almost empty, but that was not to be, at the very least I gave Sneer a few more gray hairs ! I was surprised to find his CAP set at 100%.....something that I never do on my carriers..........you never know what is sailing just around the corner, but in this case it paid off for Sneer. Now most of my Swordfish are shot down, but on the other had I have made a serious dent in his Kate force. The question is will he now try and follow through?

Sneer -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/29/2005 2:33:26 PM)

with 7 kates or with 3 DD?[:D]
you choose

I'm surprised RN BB force did not try to attack me at night - after combat and refuelling my movement radius was 1 hex and Surface TF could defend well against few kates

Sneer -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/29/2005 2:42:02 PM)

cap was set to 100% as I feared enemy carriers and had no idea how 19 kates would hurt 4 US CV
3 days ago half of zeros was on naval attack as I pointed burning ship is better spotted by my surface tf at night :-)

can't say this game is boring

Capt. Harlock -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/29/2005 8:36:53 PM)

quote:

can't say this game is boring

I second that statement! We now have the interesting situation that the Allies have a force to be feared at night, just the opposite of what usually happens in early '42. (And British torpedoes work much better than American ones. . .)

Sneer -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/29/2005 10:34:22 PM)

transports not warships were attacked by zeros
As far as warships are concerned or what was left from RN we will see if Raver use them offensively.
till now no naval counterattack has been successful
I don't treat RN as a threat. it is too small at this moment - almost all allied losses are Dutch + commonwealth
US Pacific fleet has enough power to mess a bit.
RN stays up to 2 slow BB + 2-3 cruisers and less than 5 DD.
nothing to be worried about esecially Dutch fleet doesn't exist and UK carriers are now out of action again so there is no mobile air cover.
Contrary lot of BBs cruisers and CV cover is ready for action in central Pacific.
10 BBs can tear apart any single atoll
but untill KB is in good shape it will be too risky for Raver

Raverdave -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/30/2005 5:58:18 AM)

I must say that I have always found that the RN CVs punch well above their weight.........yes they are light on aircraft (and good ones at that) but come late'42 with some Wildcats inplace of Fulmars the RN CVs can be a rather interesting little force. I once again state that they are usless in the Bay of Bengal (lack of suitable targets) and given some sea room they can be a force in their own right.
I'll put these two little buggers in port to fix up the holes that Sneer has so rudely put into them and dare say that they shall be back at sea in 3 to 4 months time.

Sneer -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/30/2005 10:14:57 AM)

I agree with that - keep em away from massed Betties and they are effective shipkillers.

Swordfish are actually pretty good, better than Devastators IMHO.

Raverdave -> RE: 2nd carrier battle! (12/30/2005 1:19:14 PM)

Well we have had two CV battles and although I have come out second best, it is second best with my CVs still floating and underway. [:)]

Sneer -> aleutian activity (12/30/2005 1:50:22 PM)

Looks like Raver builds up Aleutian region
I decided I can't commit adequate forces to the region so he is relatively safe there
The rule of mutually cooperating airfields favours allies strongly in that region as well as dedicated to that area troops
Let it be so
I'll fortify Kurile Isl and put fighter force to north Japan.
should be enough at least till 43

Sneer -> RE: CV vs. CV in 1942 (12/30/2005 4:38:36 PM)

Quiet turn today
end of March is close
I'll provide map and statistics during weekend
I found convoy at Amchitka and asw group consistiong of old US DD
kiska has airfield in use
northern area become active as Raver is building up
Maybe Raver's intelligence found info about preparing for Russia ???
it is old story now as I was thinking about this in early Feb with troops from Manila- they went to East India so plan "Red" was aborted
attacking russia now would be a grave mistake - instead I'm slowly buying out troops and reinforcing china army - if I attack russia now I would throw away all I made on chinase front till now and enemy would airlift supply + attack my industry - japan has not enough a/c now to firght formidable soviet air force- it is crazy that in this time russian reinforcement are so high - one would expect that the more is Japan involved in pacific and india the more troops would be grabbed to use against Hitler
However Raver can still be in fear as half of southern army is hidden from him and I want to carry out a small operation soon
I hate to say so but expansion time is going to the end
I can take new caledonia and most of south pacific now but KB is only one to keep them safe and supplied

few words about China - India reports and fleet operations moved it to second place
Burma road is closed
northern supply sources are cut off
results of my bombing campaign

damaged/working
oil centers
Sian 18/7
Chungking 63/12
resource centers
Wuchow 231/69
Sian 55/5
Chungking 254/46
Kunming 156/144
Chengtu 26/274
totals working
oil 19
resource 538

HI will stop as soon as oil reserves will end - still sth like 300-400 in Chinase hands
I think China is in negative supply now and when oil reserves finish it will be extremaly difficult
With east india taken there is no way to airlift supply to china so they are on their own.
still numbers are important and it will take long time but China is mine - it is a matter of time
I'm ready for any counterattack Raver can make - forts are high - units at 100% strenght and prepped
so nothing Raver really can do
in a few days I'll get 3 INF DIV in China and with 30k manpower and similar armament I'll get them mostly completed and this will offer me strong reserve formation.
I bought out also few artillery units from Kwantung Army to make my firepower advantage even higher / together with eng units to raise forts in most important bases.
If Raver moves offensively in China ( i guess he is prepped defensively) it will make things even faster.
My idea is to take area that will be immune to strategic bombing and finish unfortunate "chinase incident"
if there will be counterattack I will get lot of experiance and all china army will soon be "crack"
if not casualties will be extremaly low
