Once more, the word goes out, you never know.

There is a newish MUSH out there called the Lost Generation, set in World War 1. A text based roleplaying game, basically.

http://lostgen.alucinari.com/tiki-index.php

If you want to try connecting to it and seeing what its about, try

telnet://pix.isa-geek.com:7115

...and PM me if you are curious, I dont read this board much, I'm only here for WITP.

Mr Banana you have surprised me. You are completely opposed to server-based multi-player wargaming yet play MUDs!

I suppose that's because they're free ...

No offence BTW, anyone who uses TELNET is cool in my book ;)

A rhomboid shaped vehicle with a low centre of gravity and a long track length able to grip muddy ground and cross trenches, with two 6 pounder naval guns in sponsons, one on each side. The best heavy tank of World War 1, that unfortunately isn't saying much.

...and that was no mean feat, phew.

Well, it was strictly speaking pay by subscription server-based multi-player gaming that you objected to. On Oznoyng's WitP II thread a while back ...

I would really like to see someone try and make a proper wargame out of a MUD.

Ah, yes. I dont like games where you have to buy the CD, and then buy server space -as well-. Sorry, I don't have bottomless pockets, and its a bit of a slap in the face.

There are and have always been plenty of games which have required servers to run - Starfleet Command springs to mind, but its hardly the only one - where you didnt have to worry about any server costs, it was a given that you'd have that.

On the bigger MMORPGs, alright, you need a big server then - but then them charging you 30 quid for the CD as well is just an insult. Eve had the right idea, at least you could download the client for free.

I imagine Matrix Games would charge a bomb for WITP on a server though, and I think it totally unjustified. The price for WITP is already on the very cusp of what I would pay for as it is. Given its bug riddenness, dodgy ground combat system and such, its hardly the Perfect Game, and it does cost double what, say, Hearts of Iron 2 would cost. Slap silly server charges on top? No thanks. And its not like its going to be a huge MMORPG server, its going to have a few grogs logged into it is all, so we're talking MUD levels of complexity and effort here.

</rant>

...and yes, this game is an attempt to create a MUSH with a war backdrop as a setting, but its not a wargame, its a roleplaying game. Though it does have a coded combat system.

Tried it but too much like hard work for me....... mind you the 1980's BBS interface brought back a few memories. fiddled for a bit , nothing happened............then timed out by the server!!

Enough for me

Come over to Guild Wars, but, we don't need more TANKS (warriors), we need more MEDICS (monks), first rpg I ever played where they allowed MONKS to SOLO better than anyone else in the game. lol

Well, tiz a MUSH, not a MUD.

More about the RP than the killing, theres no levelling up or anything. Interactive storytelling sort of thing.

There are some logs of antics here

http://lostgen.alucinari.com/tiki-index.php?page=March+of+History&PHPSESSID=7c0a982d00c64281cd235a5e18b13a13

edited to add... well, there is an experience point system, but you don't go around killing automated bad guys to get experience points.

And the place needs machine gunners at the moment.

Come on , how can you compare the two.

The reason WITP cost double what , say HOI2 cost.............well it double the game.

I believe HoI2 is onto patch... 1.4?

So I think WITP beats it here.

..as for double the game... I don't think so. I think HoI2's ground combat model is even better than WITPs!

Well if continued support of a title, even after a new title under the same engine has been released (WPO). Yep you nailed it ,Matrix is guilty as sin.

And why we are on the subject, what is the schedule for the next patch for HOI I. Opps thats right they no longer support the fist title under that engine.

Shame I cant use the patches as I'm now into March 43 in my game...

And Paradox have always patched up their games. Come to think of it I can't think of many games companies which don't readily patch up their software.

Creative Assembly/Activision Rome Total War is still not fixed!! Two offical patches was it and the first one shouldn't have even counted since it really was an "emergency patch" so MPers could play the silly game.

Hasbro doesn't patch anything but "once". Monopoly Tycoon still sucks cause the AI is crapola.

Paradox games are never finished with needed patching, we're left with 1.06c for HOI 1?? The air warfare system is still messed up. Seems every patch they screw something else up as they "try" to fix something else. HOI is nothing like it was out of the box, it's no longer even as FUN as it was out of the box, but, out of the box it's so bugged and flawed with CTD's etc. that's not even fun either. And need I remind you of the .99 cent Victoria game. LOL, the total crap game of them all by Paradox and wasn't welcomed or received well at all. hahahaha I must say though I recently got HOI 2 for 4.51 on ebay. Now, that's about how much their games are really worth. ;)

Go read on the WITP forums the damage done by database corruption, leadership bugs, disappearing units, stuck units... unlike HoI2 this happens sometimes after months of gameplay.

In my game against Simon Prior I have units stuck all over the place in China and the leadership bug, though thank god it hasnt crippled me yet, and I've not yet completely lost a unit.

If, by bad luck, I did lose something important nine months away, I'm sorry, but the game is going on the shelf, never to return.

(And for lastability, Operation Flashpoint wins, I'm still playing that now and I bought it soon as it came out. )

Its all well and good being partisan, and I dont regret buying WITP (yet... its been good to me so far) but making out Paradox's bug situation is worse than WITPs is frankly laughable. In fact,as I write this someone whose game has been totalled by WITP bugs is at the head of one of the WITP forums.

I have no problem at all with HoI2 at the moment, and the air combat seems fine to me. You might take issue with it because you don't like the results it gives, thats like me taking issue with Civ3 and Civ4 because I despise the resources implementation - in other words, a point of view, not a damning indictment.

I know plenty of people who play nothing but Paradox games. I think Victoria is probably the second most played game I got. (Operation Flashpoint is #1, even after all these years, and it didnt cost me 60 quid).
(Obviously not generally people on the Matrix Games forums, and I must admit it kinda amuses me to see the psychotic attack dogs come out in defence of their fave company, but theres a bit of a biased population sample here, is there not. )

Never bought anything from Hasborg, they are scum. And neither Total War, so no idea.

and a final note in Paradox's favour - they don't copy protect their CDs. Thank Smegging God.

Wasnt really talking about you, more The Sarge.

And I never played Hoi1. A shame, I think I'd probably like it more than Hoi2. The research sounded more interesting. I know HoI1 has its fans.
