ORIGINAL: Captain Cruft Well, it was strictly speaking pay by subscription server-based multi-player gaming that you objected to. On Oznoyng's WitP II thread a while back ... I would really like to see someone try and make a proper wargame out of a MUD. Ah, yes. I dont like games where you have to buy the CD, and then buy server space -as well-. Sorry, I don't have bottomless pockets, and its a bit of a slap in the face. There are and have always been plenty of games which have required servers to run - Starfleet Command springs to mind, but its hardly the only one - where you didnt have to worry about any server costs, it was a given that you'd have that. On the bigger MMORPGs, alright, you need a big server then - but then them charging you 30 quid for the CD as well is just an insult. Eve had the right idea, at least you could download the client for free. I imagine Matrix Games would charge a bomb for WITP on a server though, and I think it totally unjustified. The price for WITP is already on the very cusp of what I would pay for as it is. Given its bug riddenness, dodgy ground combat system and such, its hardly the Perfect Game, and it does cost double what, say, Hearts of Iron 2 would cost. Slap silly server charges on top? No thanks. And its not like its going to be a huge MMORPG server, its going to have a few grogs logged into it is all, so we're talking MUD levels of complexity and effort here. </rant> ...and yes, this game is an attempt to create a MUSH with a war backdrop as a setting, but its not a wargame, its a roleplaying game. Though it does have a coded combat system.
