The house rules are the following:

- No new allied TF during turn 1, except for force Z. Historically, the brits intended move the Force Z to stop jap landings. So we decided to leave free movements for PoW and R. And the 2 ships were not in Singapore.
- No new CAP in PH.
- No historical first turn

I think is everything.

My war plan. I'll write here when Chuck will promise not to read this AAR.

Sit Rep of 12/8/41

Today the great japan armed forces continue to land reinforcement.

During the night, however, a strong british TF, leaded by the BB Prince of Wales, with 3 CL and 2 DD attacked the japanese ships anchored off Palembang. The escorting surface TF, composed by the CA Suzuya, the CA Kumano and 4 DD engaged an hard battle.
With the advantage of the radar, the british managed to sunk both the CA and 2 DD. The 14inch guns of PoW were very effective, but our sailors protected our troops transport.
The PoW has been damaged, even if not badly.

After a couple of hourse, to the opposite side of the channel, the BC Repulse, with 2 DD, attacked 1 AP and 1 AK that were unloading at Singkawang and sunk them.

Our landbased pilots, tryed to localize the british capital ships but they didn't meet success.

The KB repeated the attack agains PH, and scored several hits on the US ships:

I just realized this thread isn't off-limits to me yet. The Brits are victorious in the soon to be immortal Battle of Palembang. Remember Singapore! (We'll just ignore the fact that it's not going to make any difference to the city falling tomorrow.)

There might be more surprises in store, Pat...

Battle Rep of 12/9/41

I can believe. The allied aircraft are deadly for my ships, but my a/c remains on the ground.
They fly where they could also stay on the ground and where I need them they refuse to fly.

Anyway, today our glorious troops landed in Malacca.
We captured Kavieng, Brunei and Singkawang (Borneo), Bankha and Palembang (Sumatra), Lingayen, Davao (5750 allied troops captured), Lae and Makin.

Battle Rep of 10/12/41

Two DD, I think those based in Hong Kong, attacked in Formosa. My ships managed to sink theme. The damage to my ships are in practice nill.

My invasion plan is continuing.

Today I hit hard Singapore afld, destroying 10 a/c but loosing 5 bombers (my Zero may have lost the road....)

After conquering Palembang I based there 40 fighters to protect the oil plants. This proved to be a good decision, because Chuck sent against me 15 Fortress. My fighters shot down only 1 of them, but no score on oil plants.

I also based in Palembang some Nells to find the PoW and R but without success. I though that maybe Chuck withdrawn them to Ceylon through Sunda Strait. But, surprise!!
They found the PoW near Soerabaya. The AAW of PoW was terrible and the Nells scored no hits.
My planes found also CL Tromp between Borneo and Sumatra, but also there no score has been hit.
Everywhere my planes hit numerous merchant ships sinking a couple of theme.

Two US DD attacked one of my convoy in Tacloban, sinking two ships.

On the ground the first shock attack in Malacca reduced the fortification from 3 to 2.
Better results in Khota Bahru. I conquered the base after the first assault.
In Johore Bahru instead I reached no progress and I loose 750 men.
Miri has been conquered.
Cagayan fortification has been reduced to 0. Maybe it will fall next turn.

I hope that the mumerous operation will not cause much losses to me. I know that some TF are without escort. I don't have so much warships for all of them.

A took a big risk in Malaya. I'm really nervous for the result. The fall of Khota Bahru will permit me to base there some a/c that will protect my unescorted TF and also will attack the brits airbases.

I'm a bit concerned with PoW and R. Their big guns will cause a lot of damage to my TF if they will find theme.

The KB is far away. I'm thinking about the opportunity to call it back in the DEI to annilhate the allied surface fleet.

Battle Rep of 12/11/1941

Today I started landing troops in Wake. South Sea Det attacked immediately and conquered the atoll, making 2479 prisoners.

My aircraft did a good job in the Celebes Sea, hitting with 7 bombs CL Boise.

In Soerebaya no trace of PoW. I'm pretty sure that she left the base and is coming again near Palembang. I have to unload my transport quickly and run away.

On the ground, the fort at Malacca has been reduced to 0, in Hong Kong to 5.
Cagayan has fallen and 2765 allied soldiers, together with the entire Mindanao I. This will free a lot of troops, included the 56. Inf Bde. I will dispatch her to Tacloban, where Chuck is trying to kick me back to the sea.
Aitape, in NG, has been conquered.

I still have a lot of transport TF running to the respective destination. I'm start to think that maybe I have been to ambicious. I planned to land in Johore Bahru to close the door in Singapore. After that, the presence of PoW south of Malaya forced me to divert the forces to Malacca. The landing there was not planned at all.
I planned to land enough forces to conquer Johore immediately and now I have the forces splitted in two parts. I have to think about the problem. I don't know how to solve it yet. By now I'm decided to attack again. BANZAI!

The 5th Division, with support units, reached Alor Star. I will assault the location the next turn.
I've call back the KB, but it's a long journey.

Battle Rep of 12/12/41

During the night CL Boise attacket unescorted ships at Davao. I thought Boise was out of action after taking 7 bombs yesterday. Maybe the bombs were made by paper.

The allied aircraft over Singapore are very effective. Today I've lost 1 Zero, 3 Oscar, 1 Nell and 1 Sally. The brits lost 15 fighter and 3 bombers. But I think the airfield has been hit hard.
However torpedo and bombers from the british base placed 1 bomb on Haruna and 1 Torpedo on CL Jintsu.
In CHS mode the allied aviation is definitely more efficient than in the official game.

Over the PI I had a big surprise. Chuck move there the AVG. During the last days I encountered no opposition there, so I moved away my Zero and I sent my bombers unescorted. Result: I've lost 8 Betty!
At sea 1 of my TF attacked PTM at San Marcelino. I've lost one DD and sunk 2 PTM. Not a good deal.

The mini-KB entered today in the Sulu Sea and began attacking enemy sea lane.

Another disaster hit my navy. The two US CV attacked in Canton I. and scored several hits on my unloading ships amd their escort. I consider lost the entire fleet.
The KB is hitting around Hawaii and is too far away to help. CL Tastuta and CL Yubari, with 1 MSW and 1 AK already sunk.

At Johore Bahru another attack encountered no success. I have to suspend them for a while.
Also in Malacca I have been stopped. I moved some reinforcement there. I have to think how to solve the problem.
The mistake that I made when I splitted the landing force due to the presence of PoW caused all that.

I tried also an attack at Wuchow, but it was a massacre: 4250 casualties. The info on my hands told me that there were only 2 chinese units there....After this disaster the chinese kick my troops in the ass and they are forced to retreat to Canton. The commander will pay with his life for this débacle.

Ok, the war started not well for the Jap Empire. But I have a lot of time on my side to reach the ojective. I know that the losses are heavy and that I cannot replace them, but I still have a massive power.

The first decision is to build transport TF that include escort. No transp TF will be sent off without escort, if they are not sailing in home water.

My recon spotted some CA and CL in the Celebes Sea. I sent there some surface TF. I'm sure they will come to attack my unescorted TF.

...

This is the reason why I usually watch the whole combat report and check carefully the messages (it's a bit like cinema anyway and I paid for the show, you know ).

For instance some older japanes dive bombers still carry 30kg or 60kg bombs. Those usually just scratch the paint on warships but are still fine for civilian transport and smaller than DD auxilliary crafts.

I'm also new to this game (means still in the steep part of the learning curve) and I currently run a CHS game against the AI. I'm not playing as ambitious (=risky) like you against a real life opponent so I'm curious how it turns out for you. Good luck and keep the news coming.

Oh, you are completely right.
Sometimes I don't have much time and I skip the combat report.
Maybe it's better send the turn late but do it better.

Battle Rep of 12/13/1941

Over the sky of Singapore, today I lost 5 Oscar and 1 Nell; the brits 7 fighters and 4 bombers.

My troops started to land in Noumea.

The brits started a attack agains my troops in johore Bahru: 3 odds vs 1 for them. Not much losses.

Now the priority is to save the troops in West Malaysia. My attempt to solve close the Malaya campaign in advance, was a failure.
Now the Navy must do her part. The sacrifice of every ships is accetable to save thousands of men.
At tihis purpose Imperial Command decided to start with "Operation Lotus".
Today I have no time, but tomorrow I'll explain the operation.

Operation Lotus started today.
The purpose of this operation is to save the troops encircled in Malacca, before I lost them definitively.
All the useful ships have been recalled. The Emperor will protect my soldiers.

In the Cent Pac, after the passage of the US CV, the quiet seems to be returned in Canton I. I trasnferred there some Zero from the KB, to protect the survivors but no US planes comes again.
Now I have to find where are the enemy carriers. I don't think Chuck will order them to go to PH, because I knows I'm at north of them with the KB. So I suppose he will go south or, more probably, in direction of Noumea. I landed there and I will conquer the important base today. I think he will try to destroy my ships. The download is near completed so my ships will come back to Truk asap.

A big transport troops convoy is approaching to Rabaul to occupy this important base. After that I'll start to build up the AF.

I'm wondering....

Chuck concentrated almost the grounf INF forces in Malacca and Johore. It could be interesting, now, landing in Singapore. I know the risk posed by the 100 guns of Singapore CD. This could me cost a lot, in termo of warships, but, if my land could be successful, I could conquer Singapore in a few days transferring all the landing force now at khota Bahru.
What do you suggest guys?

Battle Rep of 14/12/41

SW PAC

Despite my orders a Transport TF landed some troops at Mussau
The order not unload was set, because that TF had to wait for another one.
49 Nell attacked Rabaul airfield. Three of them shot down. No enemy a/c destroyed
Hollandia has been captured.

South Pac

I conquered Noumea but I spotted an enemy TF some hexes SW. Maybe are the reinforcement. Anyway my TF has to run away asap.

MALAYA

The operation Lotus was a complete success. All the troops at Malacca have been transferred to Johore Bahru. Anyway my troops are still on danger. Another attack managed by the brits caused over 170 dead.
Another PT su Johore Bahru and landed there.
The aviation covered the operation.
61 Nell attacked Johore Bahru airport destroying only 1 Vildebeest on the ground. No losses.
Another 92 bombers, covered by 31 Zero attacked Singapore afld. As always the AA was strong: 3 Betty shot down and another 21 bombers damaged. On the ground I destroyed 1 Buffalo, and only 6 bombers. A lot of bombs on the runway but, incredible, the allied aviation is still flying.
1 TF has been attacked and 3 bombs were placed on the CL Kashii.
Another TF attacked: 1 torpedo in the CA Mogami
I can't believe how many bombs and torpedo the allied aircraft scored from the beginning. This never happened with the official map.
Ok. But all those losses have been estimated. Not a big price for my troops.

PI

Another PT sunk near San Marcelino.
Fighter battle over Manila. 2 Zero shot down vs 3 P-40E. Not too good.
On the ground, San Marcelino has been conquered.

DEI

Some Martin tried to attack the baby-KB in the Celebes Sea. No hits. In exchange the carried aircraft scored several hits on numerous merchant ships.
Also the aviation at Jolo proved to be effective, hitting several merchant ships.

CHINA

A guerrilla unit tryed a shock attack at Anking but was not a problem for me.

Battle Rep of 12/15/1941

MALAYA

The troops evacuated from Malacca are continuing to land in Johore Bahru to reinforce the garrison in bad condition there.

105 Nell and 45 Sally attacked Johore Bahru afld with good results. I hope this will complicate a bit the air operation agains my ships. Only 1 Sally shot down.

50 Betty and 20 Nell bombed Singapore afld, destroying 6 fighters, 3 bombers and 1 Vildebeest. I lost 1 Nell and 1 Betty.
Unbelievable, 7 Vildebeest and 4 Swordfish took-off and placed 1 torpedo on Mogami. But this is really a lucky shot.

For the moment I stopped the allied attack in Johore Bahru. The odds were 0:1 in my favour.

In the north, 5. Division reached Georgetown. It will attack tomorrow, supported by 14. Tank Rgt and 5. Mortar Bn.

PI

My Zero met P-40 over Manila and shot down 4 of them.

DEI

One of my TF bombarded Menado, destroying a couple of a/c and causing a lot of damage.
Now I'm sending it in the Molucca Sea. My recon planes spotted several enemy TF. I presume they are formed by merch ships.
The baby-KB is continuing raiding in the Celebes Sea. The same are doing the a/c from Jolo.

SW PAC

Despite the bombing of Rabaul by 26 Nell, some Hudson took-off and scored several torpedoes on my merchant ships sailing in the area and landing troops in Admiralty is. and Mussau. Both have been occupied today.

The 16. Division started to land in Rabaul. There the 148 coastal guns fired upon my ships, killing over 1000 men
I hope this operation will go quick, so that I can close the Rabaul problem.

SO PAC

An enemy TF appears at Noumea. It seems to be formed by at least 3 AP. That's meaning that Chuck wants to liberate Noumea immediately. Fine. My reinforcement are on their way. A big battle will be fight there.

East of Canton I spotted another TF. I don't know what it is. KB is not far on the north, en route to Noumea area. I send it to investigate.

CHINA

I tried an attack at Yenan, without success.

Battle Rep of 12/16/41

SW PAC

Rabaul occupied today by the 16. Division. Next turn I begin to unload the support units.

SO PAC

Allied TF bombarded Canton I. and Noumea.

MALAYA

Unloading of troops evacuated from Malacca is proceedings.
Sally bombed Johore Bahru without opposition.
Over Singapore, 42 Zero flying from Palembang met the AVG. Result: 6 P-40B shot down. No losses.
Nell and Betty battled with Tomahawk and shot down one, and destroyed 5 Buffalo and 2 Blenheim. 1 Nell and 2 Betty shot down.
On the ground at Johore Bahru the situation is for now calm.

DEI

17 Lily bombed Batavia afld: 1 Martin destroyed
I sent a strong surface TF, with 6 BB, in the Molucca Sea, to hunt all the allied shipping. First victim: 1 MSW
I spotted CA at Kendari and at Makassar. I go to intercept them. I'm not scared by the dutch airforce there. The BF are not so powerful, so not much a/c at once can attack my TF (I hope so).

PI

3 P-40E vs 2 Zero shot down over Manila. I have to reinforce my fighter force.
At San Marcelino another 3 PT sunk.

CHINA

My attack at Yenan has been repulsed by chinese forces.

Battle Rep of 12/17/41

MALAYA

Another AK hit by a dutch sub.
My planes started to attack the allied ships in the area.
1 allied ML sunk in Taan! I tried to unload mines in the port.
I tried a shock attack in J.Bahru with no success. Better to wait reinforcement.
Georgetown has been occupied.

PI

1 more PT sunk.

DEI

The TF Nagato fund and sunk an AK and a PC at large of Kendari.
1 Martin and 2 Hudson shot down while they tried to attack the TF Nagato.
The interesting think is that I spotted the Repulse

He attacked oil plants in Palmebang, scoring 1 hit. My Zero have a lot of work to defend the site.

Battle Rep of 12/18/41

MALAYA

Allied subs continuing to be very dethfull: 2 more AK sunk.
I've send out some small ASW TF. I hope that they will stop them. I know that I had to do it before, but all the ships were busy.
My Zero on sweep over Singapore didn't met the AVG again.
Some sentai bombers are bombing the ground units marching to Johore Bahru. I hope to slow them down a bit.

DEI

Batavia bombed again. 7 dutch a/c destroyed. 1 Lily shot down.
Baby KB and a/c at Jolo are doing an excellent job: today 3 AK sunk.
The dutch a/c in the Celebes area attacked today the Nagato TF.
I din't find the BC Repulse. Honestly I didn't expected to find it there. I though he was on route to Karachi, together with PoW.
But now, if it is no more around the Celebes, it's maybe on route again to Singapore.
My convoys are in danger. I have to organize the defense.
But I want to continue the search for allied merchant ships in the Celebes zone for now.
I spotted several TF south of Kendari, in the Banda Sea. I have to decide were to hunt.
Continuing searching for Repulse or sink merchant ships?

PI

He attacked my ships at San Marcelino with P-40E, scoring 1 bomb hit on an AP and on the DD Tomozuru, damaging it seriously.
I0m sending reinforcement to Tacloban, coming from Mindanao.

SW PAC

1 AP hit at Lae, and 1 Zero shot down, against the Oz planes. (none of them shot down )

Battle Rep of 12/19/41

SO PAC

One of my sub scored 1 hit on 1 AK, near the Fijis

MALAYA

Another 2 AK torpedoed by allied sub. It's incredible how they are efficient.
I captured Kuantan.
I realized now definitely that the decision to land in Johore Bahru the first day was a bad one. Now I have to solve the problem.
I attached the sit map of the Malaya.
I have more than 40'000 men at Johore Bahru, with another 37'000 coming from Georgetown and Khota Bharu. I have the 21. Mix Bde at Kompong Son ready to be transferred and other reinforcement on their way to Johore.
Chuck has around 42'000 men in Johore and 4 more units coming down from Malacca.
The options are:
1) wait the reinforcement already present in Malaya without sending the 21. Mix Bde
2) send also the 21. to Johore Bahru
3) evacuate (again) Johore and march to Malacca to encounter the northern forces.

Suggestion are welcomed guys.

DEI

4 dutch fighters destroyed on the ground at Batavia. Only 7 Lily damaged on my side.
Tomorrow I'll substitute the Kate and Jean onboard the baby-KB with Val coming from Japan. In a few days I'll do the same with Claude and Zero.
The TF Nagato is near Lautern. There is a lot of naval traffic around Timor. This is why I sent the TF there. Most of the allied player reinforce Timor to slow down the advance of the Japan. I want to avoid this. I know that the risk for my BB is high, but the speed in this game is everything. It doesn't matter if I miss one or two BB in 1943. In 1943 I must win.

PI

27 Val took off without my orders to bomb Clark. They were only on transit and they had the order to naval attack. Why they attacked an airfield??? 11 were shot down!

CHINA

A shock attack at Yenan resulted in a massacre.

Battle Rep of

MALAYA

Allied PT attacked today my ships at Johore Bahru, damaging 1 DD; 1 PT sunk

DEI

The TF Nagato reached Lautern and... a surface TF with PoW and Repulse was there to wait!
Big night battle:

BB Yamashiro received 1 torpedo and is heavily damaged
CS Chiyoda also heavily damaged; she get another bomb hit during the way back to Palau
DD Kuretake on fire
BB Nagato 8 hits

DD Vampire heavy damage
DD Edsall heavy damage
CL Danae on fire
BC Repulse 9 hits

BB Prince of Wales didn't fire and got no hits

Mini-KB hit with 2 bomb and 4 torpedo CL Boise north of Manokwari (New Guinea). What was he doing there?
Maybe he intended to attack my AP unloading troops there. (Manokwari occupied)

SW PAC

1 AP sunk at Lae

CEN PAC

One of my sub torpedoed DD Talbot SW of PH

HONG KONG

The fort reduced to 4

PI

At Legaspi the allied strike back. Shock attack. For this turn Kure 1st SNLF survived, but I think that tomorrow he will kick me in the sea.

Battle Rep of 12/21/41

MALAYA

The massacre of my merch ships by the hand of the allied subs is continuing.
Today 1 Ak (2 torp) sunk, and 1 AP.

At Kuantan the TF Kongo sunk 1 MSW and 2 PC that tried to attack my merch vessels.

Small night naval battle in the Malacca strait, between 2 my DD and 5 enemy PTM tying to raid in Johore Bahru. The DD Shirakumo took 1 torpedo and is badly damaged; 1 PTM sunk.

The Vildebeest returned to Johore Afld and my bombers returned too: 3 Beest destroyed.

BURMA

My troops marching toward Moulmein are advancing in a slow motion.

CEN PAC

1 of my SS palced 2 torp on an AK SW of PH

PI

Clark Field hit hardly by 93 bombers, escorted by 41 Zero. No losses, but the P-40 were not presents.

My troops occupied Tacloban.

DEI

The CS Chiyoda, damaged yesterday during the surf battle, hit again by 2 bombs.
BB Nagato hit by 1 bomb at Lautern. No damage. The TF reached the destination and BB PoW and BC Repulse were there to wait for. Good. Chuck loves the capital ships battle.
Anyway the results are not impressive: 1 hit on Repulse that destroyed a 5 pdr gun, 4 hits on DD Electra (1 below deck) and 1 on DD Hatsukaze (below deck).
The allied TF had only 1 BB, 1 BC, the CL Dragon and 4 DD. I suppose the other ships were gone to refuel.
With 6 BB, 1 CA, 1 CL and 3 DD I expected more results.

CHINA

The 33. division has arrived at Wenchow. Now some days to rest and to bombard the site and then the assault.

Battle Rep of 12/22/41

MALAYA

21 Mix Bde has reached Johore Bahru and is beginning to land.
The ASW TF started to operate in the area. I hope this will help my navy.
I destroyed 3 Vildebeest that find refuge to Victoria Point
2 more destroyed at J.Bahru, but AVG was present and I lost 1 Oscar and 2 Sally.
The 5. Division is marching to Kuala Lumpur, reached already by a mortar bn that cannot attack.

BURMA

What are doing my troops in Burma? An ant would go faster.

CEN PAC

I have one small TF approaching Palmyra to invade. It is 2 hexes away and tomorrow I begin to land, but Boston are presents, I don't know if I'll reach the objective. I hope that the 2 DD as escort will be enough.
If the operation will have succes, fine, if not, it's not a problem.

I have 1 AK one day from Canton with vital supply but I spotted 2 SS there.

DEI

CS Chiyoda has been hit by almost 15 bombs or more. Deadly hit by a surf TF leaded by CA Houston off Amboina. Sys dam 99. She will sunk tomorrow.

No other TF encountered by the TF Nagato. It's time to go back to refuel. I hoped for best result during this cruisin, but that's war.

PI

San Jose is captured.
In Luzon I spotted 2 allied ground units N of Clark. Intel said 177 AFV and no INF. What is trying to do? I don't think he will move to San Marcelino or Lingayen. There are plenty of jap ground units. The only possibility is that he moves to Tuguegarao. I really don't know why but I begin to know him, and I know that he's trying to slow me in all the possible way. I have no troops there, so I have to hurry there with the nearest convoy with troops on board. The other possibility is to transport there the 2nd Para Rgt from Kiungshan. The nearest convoy is days away.

On the south he retreated from Legaspi. Why? One more shock attack and now my troops were in the sea. I really not understand. Anyway better for me. Reinforcement are started to land today.

CHINA

At Hong Kong my troops didn't shock attack. I don't know why.

SOUTH PAC

I can restart the operation in the south, suspended because the presence of an enemy surf TF. The TF is alway there, she bombed my troops at Noumea this night, but the KB is only two days away and will protect the landings in Lunga, Luganville and the reinforcement in Noumea.
I lost the allied CV. Maybe they turned back to go to the Pacific. I've set to ASW the Mavis chutai. I hope they will help.

I like your AAR, but I cant give you suggestions because I'm biased and furthermore I'm reading your opponents AAR also. Anyway I wish you luck it seems to me that you lost some ground in the beginning, but you can still make it up.

The Val's on Naval attack probably had AF attack as secondary command set. I experience this all the time in my games, but havent noticed yet were it comes from. My guess is if they come from Training to Naval the secondary command gets enabled with the AF attack nonsense... got to check this.

Thanks for the info. Next time I'll check to avoid stupid losses.
