As part of my update to version 5 of my alternative WitP map, I am trying a new map style, which uses fonts similar to those used by Subchaser for his maps, and softer divisions between land and sea, and between shallow and deep ocean. And the reefs are now blue instead of purple.

Here is a sample of the map style being tested. I am interested in any comments from those that have used my map. Better than the old style? Worse? Don't care? No difference?

If most people prefer this style (and I like it), then I will make it the standard style for my map.

Andrew

Looks good, but the shape of those fonts is a tad boring, use something with some character. The colors are great though.

Andrew, I love the new colouring and shallow/deep interface. They're beautiful. When you mentioned that you had changed the reef colour to blue, I was skeptical, but it really works. Very nice.

I'm also not a huge fan of the font, but don't really care either way about that. Whatever is easier for you, as the quality of your maps is still tops!

Andrew looks much better! Similiar to sub chasers style fonts yes but i do prefer his a little better....

...also anyone else miss the darker blue water colors??? the current AB water colors seem a little grey to me...

subchasers text seems a little less edgy...

Nope. But I do agree with Feurer Krieg on the Font. I can live with the small fonts in white, but the Bodies of Water I'd love to see something closer to Subs map.

I like the fact that the land masseas aren't outlined...that was my biggest turn-offs with your map AB.

I couldn't find any font similar to the font Subchaser used for his ocean text, so I went for consistency - using the same font style throughout. I tried to make the base text font as close to Subchaser's as I could get, as I like the font he used.

I really like your maps and won't play without them now. The new version is a bit nicer than the old version, and they are both much better than the original map that came with the game.

A couple of minor requests:

1) Put a legend in an out-of-the-way corner that explains the road/railway/trail symbols. One opponent that I enticed into using the maps asked what the symbols are and I could not answer his questions even after doing a search of the forum responses;

2) In a couple of critical areas such as in western Luzon (Phillipines) it is real difficult to figure out which hexes are connected by roads and which are not (until I watch the speed that the units move and then realize there is no highway connecting the hexes). I'd greatly appreciate if you would clarify the transportation network geography of western Luzon island.

Not a problem for me. The map is great the way it is. I'll look around and see if I can find it, if nothing more now than out of sheer curiosity.

This style looks fine.

For me there was only one problem with your previous map: the LITTLE map was harder to use. So for me the decision of which to use would turn on "is the little map easier to use, or not?"

Andrew, looks fan-bloody-tastic mate ! I just wish that I was not so deep into 3 PBEMs so that I could run your map.

I don't use anything other than stock maps at present but this does look great Andrew. Well done.

Looks good. Hopefully there will be hex-less version, and version without myriad of those lines intersecting the map all over....

They're good to help hide TF icons "in" them Otherwise I don't know.

I hate all map clutter. My ideal map would have just nice shades of blue where the ocean is. 50% of all-too-obvious placenames (like Phillipines, New Guinea, Australia, India...) would be deleted too.

(To simplify things I even modded my own map to show just the UK flag in place of British colonial designs )

O.

BTW one thing Andrew. Personally I don't use hex-ed map so I don't care, but I think in hexed version you should have placenames (fonts) *above* hex grid to make it easier to read, not below.

O.

Of course, I'm the odd ball ... but when I'm "playing the game" ... I want something that is easy to read and gives me the information I need to "play the game" ... what it "looks like" is of secondary importance. Now if I'm just "looking at cool stuff" .. then having "cool stuff to look at" would be a higher priority. So, I'll agree that smooth colors, low contrast fonts, information starved versions are "cool to look at" .. but again if I'm playing .. I like your current version better as it gives me easier access to the info I need to play ... but whaddo I know !?

So can we ( as some have suggested ) have both .. a "cool to look at" version and an "easy to use/read" version !? !?

I actually agree with you J ... it would be interesting to see one that looked like a military map instead of a pretty one ... What would make it nifty is if the hex version was the military one and the non-hex version was the pretty one ... then you could toggle between the two depending on your needs.

Speedy, "those intersecting lines" indicate the different weather zones and the malaria, temperate zones.

Andrew, now I am lost. What [extended] map did I download a few weeks ago? I mean the one which has Sub Chaser's fonts.
