I have a couple of questions.... 1/ What has happened to the 'knock knock' sound in the background sound effects in ver. 2.2? I'm playing the mammoth Steel Shield scenario at the moment and when there is not the sound of gunfire or explosions there is a deathly quiet. That's why I thought the background effects were so cool! It provided a warlike atmosphere. And in case you are wondering, I do have weather and battlefield sound effects turned on. Doh! 2/ Regarding a post in late May about the vulnerability of aircraft. In the battle I am playing above, I lost both my P-38 Lightnings to an Ostwind and a "Jug" to a similar fate. Both P-38s were inbound to take out a pair of King Tigers but they never made it. This raises the question of how difficult it must have been to hit a low level plane over a heavily forested area doing over 250mph+. Or maybe it's just that the "Fork-tailed Devil" is not cut out for ground duties. *G* Any opinions on this? 3/Lastly what does the aircraft option in the preferences menu do? Is this just changing how good the crew are on board the aircraft themselves? And will this help them avoid/survive ack-ack fire? I'm on T9 of this awesome scenario WB and I have to say those King Tigers are causing me some consternation. But I have plenty of firepower available and TG those monsters can't move very far.

In a generated battle, the Bolshies had 2 Tu-2's, 1 Il-2, 1 Yak of some sort and at least 2 P-39's. I was repeatedly subjected to strafing (16-20 runs) and my 3 Ostwinds, combined with 6 or 8 SdKfz. 251's scored a total of 1 hit. I think this is just one of those things where your perception is colored by what happened to you last.

#1 Gotta try this myself. Because the game crashed on me before during the arty barrages I had these permanently off #2 Seth gave a good answer. Low level strafing I believe is just about the most dangerous thing you can do with an aircraft. You are within effective range of just about everything that says bang. Btw, when I played that scenario as Germans my flak shot down one of both types. You may guess that I was happy. Airstrikes killed one tank and one truck, so that was within my sense on historical accuracy, so no complaints this time. #3 that aircraft option lets you determine how many aircraft units you can buy in a scenario. If you leave it to default then the programmed 'chance for air superiority' thingy kicks in making it uncertain if you can buy aircraft or not. Voriax

Thanks, Anzac. Sounds like you have Steel Shield under control. I did not notice the pop pop sound being gone. I'll check. Aircraft, always a mystery. Last night I used two P-47s against Frank Donati in that TCP/IP match. They both made at least three runs. The Ostwinds never fired. Further frustrating, the Jabos never hit a thing except one half-track. So for that battle it was thumbs-down for aircraft AND AA fire. Frank told me later he had played the scenario before as the US and his P-47s had taken out both Panthers and saved his butt. First battle of version 2.3 campaign tuesday, I used a Stuka, which I don't think got hit (maybe too high a message rate). In any case, it bombed a Polish jw with everything and didn't as much as get a hit. When I checked into using it again I found it has one damage point and wouldn't refly. It seems every single time I buy an aircraft, it's the story we see here. Isn't the Stuka offered in '39, supposed to refly after one damage point? I, of course, contrast this to the AI's propensity to have aircraft making multiple runs, as I doubt the AI bought some 10-20 aircraft with single runs.

Charles, the '39 Stuka does not have the 'dedicated ground attack' flag so it's basically a single run aircraft, especially as it doesn't have secondary cannon armament. Not really surprising behaviour from a dive-bomber, afterall. As for it missing everything, that is another matter. play with the arty preferences button, or do a test how increasing the firecontrol or rangefinder value affects the hitting. Voriax

So to see that in SP:WAW decently manned and capable AA mounts *can* indeed protect such valuable and expensive assets such as a KT from the air. In general, i hav'nt noticed the air/ground interaction to be skewed one way or another. In some scenerios the aircraft are able to punch thru and in others i've seen the plane get bagged. one thing i've noticed though...very very few 'hits' are being scored...even when crewed by experienced pilots
