...Indeed it is!!! ...but when you look at the map than there just isn't many bases I could start my comeback!!! Dave has 8 units at Baker Island too so and only level 4 airfield possible.

Only other place I see is the Upolu region but that would require huge invasion force too and since the closest place I have is Christmas Island than the suprise aspect would be totally lost.

I do not have a good feeling on this forthcoming operation either ....8 units propably behind level 9 fortifications + KB/BB's in the area just does not sound good but my options are limited... unfortunately.

Thanx Sneer!! I think I will need it!!!

Don't forget to flood the approaches to Canton with about 15 or more subs to slow down any reinforcements and make KB's movement in support more hazardous.
I don't know where all your subs are, but it takes time to get them back to Pearl and get their sys damage down to 0 or close.

...I forgot to mention but this has actually been done... There are a lot of submarines in nearby Canton Island soon! Actually 2/3 of whole US submarine fleet are enroute to their designated patrol locations.

Game date is 8th of January 1943

Preparations are slowly moving ahead for the Canton Island invasion. Still a lot of things to do.

CV Essex arrived to San Francisco last turn. It will head out to Pearl Harbour in order join up with the US CV Fleet.

Last turn Japanese airforce struck at Chungking. I lost around 150 aircraft and Japanese losses were around 120 aircraft.

That was quite an battle at Chungking. I think Dave might have some plans in this theatre.

I have moved those squadrons from Chungking to more safer bases. AVG P40B's and 1 Squadron of P38's are now moved into Chungking since I will not let him have this airsuperiority without an fight.

Hmm, I agree. It doesn't make sense for him to accept those losses unless he is intending to capitalise on the position they create.

Any chance of a picture showing a map of China?

The end result was that both lost about 80 aircraft!

The bad news for me is that my Spitfire pools are pretty much depleted. I'am trying to rotate my squadrons here in order to repulse the enemy assault waves. Time will tell whether I can achieve this objective.

The second bad news is that I do NOT like what I see in Southern Pacific. Atolls guarded with 8 units behind level 9 fortifications. Also no LBA support is possible for me!!! I might even cancel the Canton Island operation all together!

...IF I want to use my LBA's in offensive way than only way seems to be via Aleutians. I looked there last turn with a thought. It seems Kiska and surrounding bases can be built up to level 5 airfields. IF I choose to go there I would a mutually supporting bases for my LBA's and that means trouble for Japanese side.

I could redirect the troops I have planning for Canton Island to Aleutians area. It seems that Dave does not have significant garrisons present there. Also KB and main BB fleets seems to be preparing for the allied comeback in the Southern Pacific.

It is actually 50/50 chance.... Canton Island and than island hopping or a big push through Northern Pacific where the weather will be a enemy itself!

Hm.  I'm not really sure what he's doing at Chungking.  On paper, Chungking is nearly impossible to take, even undersupplied, it's just to many guys to try an kill.

I wonder if he's deliberately attriting your pools of quality aircraft?  First blush, seems odd for Japan to attrit the Allies (expect the other way around).  But considering that you've already commented that your Spit pools, maybe others, were running low, it might be that he's just trying to drain your first quality aircraft.  Dave is a training freak after all.  His does have an uncanny ability to replace even 150 lost pilots.  Whereas production may allow him to actually out-produce you in quality airframes (not sure tho).

Othere than that, I have no idea.  Like I said, Chungking is nearly impossible to take, if you just dig in (at least, that is appearent from the AARs where it has been tried).

I would suggest that he is trying to attrit your quality aircraft. I did the same in Burma ( at Rangoon). I did it at a very unfavourable loss ratio but when I went into India it paid off in terms of much lower losses.

However unless Dave is making a move on something very important soon where this lack of pilots and airframes will play in your favour this sort of attrition isn't really, IMO, beneficial to the japanese.

Here is situation map from China. I have + 300 000 men at Chungking. Those Chinese troops outside the cities are my picket lines. (A kind of an early warning system )

Hi guys. How is your game going againts Dave? Hopefully he is not invading West Coast currently!!!

Yes. He did harm to my P40E and Spitfire pools!!! Replacement rates for these aircrafts aren't plenty so It is not easy to combine them at full strenght.

The rotation system worked (at least temporarily) since Dave stopped his airstrikes at Chungking. I have now +100 fighters covering the base so he better come with force.

Those P40E's are combining at Jorhat and I could actually send one more of these back from India!

The good news is that Chinese bombers have now upgraded to B25J's. These squadrons are currently at India too.

I'am moving my forces to Aleutians currently. Three US divisions set sail to Anchorage from Pearl Harbour last turn. Another 41st US division is heading to the area from West Coast. Supporting elements are also enroute to the area.

Also an surface TF (4 BB's plus escorts) have sailed from San Francisco. Additional Dive bombers and torpedo aircraft have been made available from South Pacific HQ.

Things just take time to setup and deploy. Hopefully we will have this offensive in motion soon enough.

The updates will become more frequent once the action hots up

My own game vs. Dave appears that he's in a bit of a re-org mode. It hasn't been -that- long since my CVs went glug, glug, glug. However, I have almost successfully extricated what is left of my fleet. Losses for the debacle are 4 USN CVs, 4 RN CVs, 1 BB, and 2 CAs and a CL. Lots of damaged stuff, but most of my major warships are out of harm's way at this point. Going to be in the repair yards for a long time, but it's not like I have anything else to do with my time at the moment. Still, I'll feel better when stuff is actually -IN- SanFrancisco.

I expect he's of the mindset now that he can push for another 6 months of offensives, instead of settling into the "dig in" phase (because he can). Then again, there isn't all that much that he -can- take : He'll recaputre SoPac (Suva to Pago-Pago). He may go after Noumea or Canton at this point, but that would be a huge battle (I have like 5 Divisions at each, all with 9 forts and 100 prep, and a gazillion supplies). Dunno.

He did just invade one of the Aluetion islands (no biggie). I had actually started to occupy the western Alueutions about a month ago, but have since pulled back the 1 Div I was doing it with (no point in feeding it to him piecemale).

The foritification of Hawaii is almost complete (a stack of 25 SeaBees and EABs helps). Everything will have 9 forts and max AF, with 250 support (since none of those AV Rgts will be in SoPac for quite some time), and over 800k supplies at each base. Frankly, I'd love to see him come after the HI.

I still hold Midway, FFS, Johnston, Palmyra, Christmas : All with 9 forts. If anywhere, I expect him here. I'm not "strongly" holding them tho (like Noumea and Canton), because I'm sure he'd just land with a 6 Divs and pulverize any defenders anyways. Figure if he does go for 'em, I'll keep them suppressed with LBA. I'm not that concered about an invasion of West Coast now. He's more likely to try and capture these bases, and then "raid" between WC and HI. But with with 5 million supplies and almost 2000 aircraft (spread out even!) in the HI, I'm pretty sure they can hold for quite some time.

Oh, somewhat of an diffrent game we got going

Despite loosing those CV's I think you are actually well setup for an comeback. Since you still own Canton Island, Fiji, Noumea and some other important atolls you can pound him to dust with your LBA's. (I wish I had that opportunity)

Seems that Dave have halted his advances. (Just like in this game) I think he might not even go forward with offensives since he might be scared of your LBA's.

Intresting to see that he has not made much advances in Aleutians. That is good since intend to make that one serious place for my advances.

Just curious.. What is the situation at Burma like? I don't think he has that much firepower placed there. Allthough some 20 units seem to be at Rangoon currently.

As for this game it seems that Amchitka has 2 LCU units and Kiska has 6 enemy units present. Hopefully he is not reinforcing these bases since those two bases will serve as main LBA airfields for my advance.

Well, he's going for the Aluetions now, just because he can. I'll either stand at Unmak/Dutch or Anchorage. Both are fairly well build up with 9 forts. I've got 2 Div in Alaska. Haven't actually decided yet.

I'm going sacrifice Suva. I'll put a Bde there or something, to make him fight for it. But even at 9 forts, it's won't hold. I've pulled all those guys back to Noumea, gives me about 6 - 7 Divs there, with 9 forts. But that's better than 3 divs here and there. Canton has quite a bit also. It was my staging point for troops re-invading SoPac. But now without CVs to cover an invasion, they'll just sit and defend Canton. He might try to invade Canton, just for revenge. Canton was his first invasion that I clobbered at. He might be back for revenge, esp with nothing better to do (if he doesn't go for HI).

Burma is "nothing". I like it that way. I own Akyab, and India. Akyab has 9 forts and an AF6. I have total air superiourity, more because he hasn't seemed to care up until now. I've also destroyed every strat resource in SEAsia except Bangkok (and little be left in Hanoi). Oddly enough, since v1.801, I haven't done any damage to strat targets. So I've switched to leveling his AFs. But basically, Burma is "nothing". He's not coming to India (or like HI, would be amusing if he did)

I think Dave has learned from his mistakes in our game.

I do agree that Suva is expendable. Just two bases that will serve as a Japanese POW camp as long as you control Noumea and Canton Island. Those two places are worth a big fight and since you were able to ship substantial Allied reinforcements from West Coast I doubt he can win those bases.

Intresting to see that Dave has not made any serious attempts on Burma. In this game he conquered Myithkina and than nothing... absolutely nothing. Actually there is just 10 000 men garrisoning Myithkina at the moment if my intel is correct. Good play to destroy those industrial capabilities in SEAC command radius.

Seems to me that you got Aleutians well covered too. He is not a player who pays any particular intrest on the area it seems. I'am actually counting on it and if I'am wrong than I will be screwed big time

I just want you kick some butt when your CVs go head to head.  Sounds like you'll be bringing Essex and the the first round of CVLs to the party, all with updgrades.

Kick some ass for me!

I will do my best!!! That is an promise

Actually the ass kicking party might have now started in Northern Pacific!!!

Dave has actually moved some of his CV's/CVE's in the area. I don't know what he is up to but this has forced me to reroute my transport shipping in the area.

Day Air attack on Dutch Harbor , at 103,36

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses

Allied aircraft losses

At least CVE Hosho is there. US navy HQ has ordered it's CV's to start sailing North! Hopefully I can intercept the enemy! All 6 major US CV's have now left Pearl Harbour!!!

Additional Dive bombers and Torpedo bombers have been moved into Anchorage too.

Also Chungking was hit hard by enemy aircrafts!!! I did lose more than 60 planes vs 45 lost by the enemy. (His pilots are not too bad here but I cannot loose the skies above Chungking)

As you can see Dave has put a huge fight in this region.

His main CV Fleet is currently near Adak and unfortunately for him his invasion force was left without proper aircover at Dutch Harbour. He managed to land in 62000 troops but those troops are badly hammered. Dave will capture this base but I will bomb it to dust from Anchorage.

Here is the action from last turn...

Next turn will be intresting! I will retreat from this battle. My CV's will stay in the area. I think we might have a good chance that CV vs CV duel will happen next turn since his fleet is at Adak!

More troops are arriving at Anchorage. 41st US Division embarked last turn and 3 more US divisions are enroute there. Also 1 US Surface combat TF is heading to area from Prince Rupert!

Also it was good day in China! First time allied fighters managed to inflict more damage to the Japanese side!

I like those odds. I have kept rotating my fighters in China so he better come prepared if he chooses to continue this action!

It will be VERY intresting to see what Dave will do.

He will continue to commit to Dutch Harbour. I would counsel against engaging in a carrier vs carrier fight. You cannot survive meeting KB on the high seas and one must assume that is what Dave has brought to cover his invasion.

Let him take Dutch Harbour ( but try to evacuate cadres), try to use your land-based air to attrit his transports and covering forces and then bomb the invaders into the dust. Play to your advantages.

It is kind of too late to cancel US CV operations since the the turn is sent back.

There are reasons why I did not retreat.

a) I need to buy more time so that my reinforcements can arrive to Anchorage safely. Those 3 US Divisions are still 2-3 turns away from Aleutians.

b) I do have plenty of fuel and supplies on Anchorage. This means that this base can supply my navy vessels!

c) I can put a lot of LBA's into action. So, he better be ready for serious losses.

d) IF I loose CV's than it is not too late to get them back.

and maybe the biggest thing of all... I need to take in some offensives action! I cannot let him build up fortifications here too and just let him prepare. If he commits than I will counter... These bases are not atolls and that is good news for me!

I just recieved the combat replay from Dave. Another excellent turn despite the fact that Dutch Harbour was captured.

The big news is that he did not commit his CV Fleet into action and I managed to hit quite a few enemy transports in the area!!!

My CV fleet will sail into Anchorage now. There these ships will refuel and replenish. Once this is done they are again ready for action.

It seems Dave has moved aircrafts to Dutch Harbour. Because of this next turn around 200 B17's will bomb the airfield to dust!

My Intel reports that there 65 000 enemy units currently occupying the Dutch Harbour base. I will launch an counterstrike once I close down the airfield there.

More troops are enroute towards Aleutians and 1st squadron of Corsairs is not on Anchorage too.

Also there now 100 fighters protecting the Chungking industry/airfields.

First time in this war it has been a good week for allied side

Dave has comeback from his vacation and game continues!

Current game date is 9th of February 1943

The focus is still at Aleutians and will remain so for time being.

I dispatched my 4E bombers on assault againts Dutch Harbour.

The result could have been better but I guess this is better than nothing

I will continue to bomb enemy aircraft at Dutch Harbour and consume his supplies. I do not want him to start fortifying the place.

US BB TF has been given orders to participate in this operation. These ships will bombard the port facilities next turn.

US CV Fleet has also replenished and will head out into area.

The major development is that I'am loading up an invasion TF at Anchorage. This will consist 3 US Divisions and supporting troops. Erstad has 64 000 men at Dutch Harbour and those troops cannot be in full battle readiness. So, hopefully I can destroy these units with an swift counter invasion!!!

Those were good results to me!

The invasion TF loaded with 60 000 men will hit the beaches at Dutch Harbour soon. It has already sailed from Anchorage! IF everything goes well than we will have some 60 000 dead/POW Japanese in our hands.

US Navy (BB TF + CV Fleet) will remain in the area supporting these offensives!

Few more submarines are also dispatched into the Aleutians.

You are taking on a Japanese invasion with only an equal number of men in the counter-invasion? I understand that you are relying on overwhelming aerial and naval superiority to make up the difference but with failure rendering so much else highly vulnerable are you sure this is wise?

There are several factors here.

a) Dave took a quite an beating with the initial landings. Also his ships were assaulted enroute to the area ----> He must have high distrubtion and fatigue levels.

b)I have kept bombing the place so I doubt he has been able build up fortifications.

c) I think bulk of those 60 000 troops are not actual infantry forces but supporting elements.

d) It is not an Atoll so my troops can land in with relative easy.

e) This operation can be covered by LBA and Naval firepower.

At least that is my reasoning ...I know it might end up in disaster but also there is a good chance of getting first major allied victory of the war. I guess I'am a gambling man here

Well you might as well give it a try. to be honest even if you fail, as long as you don't get creamed navy wise ( ie BBs and or CVs sunk ), who cares really... And you seem to have a good opportunity to bring him to a Guadalcanal type of fight on your terms.. The only thing to watch out for I guess is if he comes with the whole KB to the party... At long range CAP makes it almost immune to LBA strikes...

It is a somewhat of an gamble... there are risks and rewards and I calculated that gains overweight the negative side of things

KB will pop up into party but IF it was down near Noumea than it still cannot be in the area. Most of my BB's are currently at Pearl Harbour. I have just 1 BB TF + US CV Fleet in Aleutians. IF I loose or damage some CV's than this is the last time to do it. Considering the fact that those CV's lost in late 1943 wohn't arrive until late 1944.

As you said Idea is to create Guadacanal type of situation where I can move under LBA cover. It seems that he does not have bulk of his troops and ships in North Pacific.

One good thing is that I will receive 2 US RCT units within 2 weeks time. These guys will head out to Anchorage to serve as an reserve.
I also have 1 US Aviation unit currently at SF. It is detached to South Pacific but I might move it to Dutch Harbour if the base surrenders.

There is the chance of loosing 3 US Divisions but I'am kind of used to loosing that amount! I did loose same amount of troops in my other PBEM when I went for Wake Island!
