Nice try Aztez ! .. was that a mid ocean PT boat intercept ? I usually split them into 2 x 6 .. twice the chance of an intercept and ive never seen all PT boats engage anyway. Having a lrge group seems to achieve nothing.

Homan is looking dodgy. Unusual jap assault route there. I usuaulyl see ichang or yenen-Kweil??? (thingy) . Being on a rail hex your supply should be in a better position. also have a look at support points. i bet your low here ( chaina usuaully is). can u rail down the chinese red army and the spares in sian. might make a big differance . OH and change the commanders too( for the corps as well)..

good luck

It was not an mid ocean intercept. That combat happened near Batavia. Propably I should split those PT's but I haven't decieded yet.

I didn't expect Erstad to try an breakthrough at Homan. There are well over 20 units involved there. I wohn't go into greater detail what I'am planning in China but I will try to counter his moves here.

I don't know what kind of style Erstad usually plays but he is moving around with force and has yet to make a mistake in this game

If Erstad agrees not look into this AAR than I will discuss the operational plans in greater detail. There are some ideas that I would like to have input about.

Well, hopefully you can keep Singapore at least until end of January..everything later than that is bonus. After it falls he'll prolly steamroll Burma. And I bet that his troops didn't like those battles in Homan..Chinese don't cost much for Allies in terms of Victory Points....

There is always the chance that IJ will run out of supplies in Singapore & Philippines for a while..and have to re-supply, giving more time.

Hopefully I can hold on to Singapore but I'am not counting on it... odds just don't look too good! Only hope is that is short on supplies.

China situation isn't great either. Yes, I managed to inflict some casualties but he got 1:1 odds which is not particular good sign.

I don't think Erstad will run into too severe supply situation. Actually, he seems very capable opponent and that is scary thing to note

I'am actually building up my future plans on your idea Sardaukar! So, you will be guilty in "court of law" if this ends up in a total disaster!

More detailed information about this one as soon as I know Erstad wohn't be reading this AAR

any chance of slipping in an AK or 3 (singly) to singers ? .. can make a huge differance is you can. Although your opponent looks very very competent to me.

Nope. Unfortunately, I have tried that last turn but the AK in question got toasted by the Imperial Japanese navy

Yes, I don't think he has made a single mistake yet in this game I really have to be careful what I'am doing or...

Once I get more troops into positions we will see quite massive battles and with 3 day turns it's only going better...

I can actually recommend to try 3 day turns... It's gives the game quite an diffrent perspective

...but as I said earlier I have a game plan which nobody has tried... at least I'am unaware of that ...Thanks to Sardaukar for this

TOP SECRET

GRAND STRATEGY

As I said Sardaukar gave me an idea when he was commenting in my other PBEM.

This game is about supplies for Japan and more harm I can cause for Erstad the better. Therefore
the main focus will be in CenPac.

CenPac.

This is the main operational theatre in this game. There are two objectives here...

Capture Tori Shima and build up this place for LBA’s. This base will give me an oppurtinity to severly damage his supply runs from Home Islands. I don’t know whether anyone has tried this strategy before so I would like hear your opinions.

Obviously Wake Island needs to be captured too.

I have already started strenghtening Midway and this base will serve as a launching point.

This operation also means that I need powerful CV fleet and this will push the starting date for this operation back. How long should I wait that is the one key question.

Another thing what this will result to is the fact that he has to react to this. He will bring his navy and some major LCU’s in battle so I relly need to be prepared.

Malaya peninsula & Philippines

These sectors are already lost and hopefully the last stand at Manila/Singapore will hold for an while.

India & Burma

I will keep my British fleet assets in India since I don’t have any ideas what he is up to here.

The houserule states that Karachi can’t be captured so that gives me little operational freedom.

Building up defenses will be the priority. Once I get enough troops than I will launch major ground
offensive
through Burma and than to Malaya Peninsula.

I have my Burma army at Mandalay. Chinese SEAC units are also moving there. I haven’t decieded whether I should retreat some of these forces to India mainland.

China

He has started his major advance through Homan. As said there are +300 000 men there,

Because of this I have ordered general retreat from Yenen. These troops are heading towards Sian.
Also I have abandoned the base at Homan. These troops will also move to Sian.

Once I get enough air assets I will contest hir air superioty here but not before I get some Spitfires and such.

The main defensive positions will Kweiyang, Chungking and Chengtu.

I don’t want have my unit scattered too thin so that is why I think small perimeter is better and propably will cause him more troubles.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

He has blockaded the supply routes to Australia. since he controls Canton Island & Pago Pago. Erstad will propably capture more bases here too.

Actually more troops he moves here the better since as I said I intend cut off these from their supplies.

I haven’t actually decieded whether I should move some troops Noumea and surrounding islands.

I have already started building up Palmyra & Christmas Island. There is 1 RCT force moving to Canton Islands and 1 Canadian Brigade to Palmyra.

I propably wohn’t even bother trying to sneak in more LCU's to Australia and South Pacific pass his blockade. This might be an mistake though?.... not sure. I tried to sneak 2nd USCM division but the convoy got sunk! Thankfully I had some elements of these troops left behind so this was not an complete disaster.

If I can build up Palmyra and Christmas Island (Level 5 airfield possible) than I will storm through Marshalls and Gilberts.

DEI

I wohn’t be moving any additional units here. Dutch have to defend themselves.

Russia

I haven’t made any plans yet. Lets just see what his intensions here are first.

I got into 2-day turns myself when playing against AI now, and I'm enjoying it lot more than 1-day turns, to my surprise.

About Aztez Grand Strategy: Quite bold thing to do, I must admit. But Japan is probably weakest in Central Pacific. You just need to deal with KB in future. One thing to remember is that if you capture Tori Shima, you will toggle IJ kamikazes on from start of 1944 if I recall right. Long way to go, but something to remember.
As with Dutch, I usually concentrate defenses in Java. You can use US subs to get fragments of Dutch/Brit base forces there. Thus, when parent unit gets destroyed, the fragment becomes parent and starts to grow back. And then you can use sub transport to evacuate to Darwin too. That way you can buld it up without resorting to bringing units from USA.

2 day turns are fun and I can actually recommend to give try to 3 day turns

As for the strategy itself... yes, it is bold as you said but it seems he wants to blockade South Pacific than let him do so. This means he cannot have significant troops at CenPac! (At least hopefully not so)

This plan requires suprise aspect. I can hope that he does not have KB around Japan when this operation will be launched.

It is hard deciede rough date for this offensive... I really need quite a few CV's, CVL's and CVE's... also it would not hurt to have solid LBA fighters at my disposal.

When this goes ahead I think a second offensive should be launched couple of weeks before the main campaign starts! Hopefully, this one "phony" operation will draw his troops attention and he can't troops everywhere.

You can put up quite a fight even in DEI without reinforcing it, just by concentrating your forces.
If you concentrate Dutch & Brits in area to Java and withdraw for example Malaya air there you make it almost certain he'll have to commit KB to take it. Besides, Java creates supplies, so it has to be invaded and cannot be easily just isolated. It also interdicts Palembang and other oil centers.

Or you could make Timor as your advance base. It's just awfully difficult to keep supplied in 1942.

True. I have withdrawn most of ABDA forces to either to Batavia and Soerebaja. However there is not too many assault points there since most of the Dutch units are Base forces.

I actually withdraw the Malaya airforce either to India or Burma so those planes are not available.

I actually would like to contest Timor but at the moment that is impossible since I lack solid infantry units. But this could be the place for the "phony" campaign later before the main offensive.

Timor is a LOT easier to supply than you think. Look at may first go with Miller. Keep some Dakotas in australia (say 36) and timor can hold out. concetrate in koepang and lightly garrison the other 2 places . THEN dakotas from derby can air lift in troops when u need them. also the usual karachi-perth supply convoys can divert a few ships either directy to koepang or derby. Darwin and derby are great places to get fagmented dutch base forces too (via sub) as the support personell can rebuild fast once the main body had been destroyed. also an AS in darwin is highly recommended too ( you have 2 in soerbaja u dont need there )

in sumatra the northern bases are useful to transfer in air groups from india ( esp if you get a small bf to andaman is) .. use a dutch one from the west sumatran coast.

However to make it really safe u need some big air groups from america say 2 fighter 72's a p39 and maybe a big ole mitchell unit (25C's preferably for the range).Getting these to suatralia may be tricky however.

Thats one bold plan u have there for the cent pac ! .. WOW .. and you really need at least carrier parity for it to have any chance of success. i would say possibly late 42 as a time to spring that suprise, and maybe when u know kb is in the DEI finising off java .. get wake back in a massive amphib op ( start prepping NOW ) .. and losing the 2ndUSMC .. OUCH ! .. thats one of your best units for quite some time. but as you say it can be rebuilt but dont expect it to come back much before 43 imo.

You have quite a few north pac RCT's get them prepping for wake and bring them down ( who cares if nome is undefended ! ) I would also use PH as a main staging post as midway is well within recon range of wake and he will almost crtainly spot your preperations , while heavy traffic around PH is quite normal .. also operationally when u send the invaion to wake send it initially to midway so i appears as a large supply convoy THEN when there refuel and charge !

anyway just a few idea from a truly PBEM starved person ..

Timor is tempting. The only drawback at the moment is the lack of infantry units. I actually do have an AS stationed at Darwin. (The one from Soerebaja)

The second problem is that I really want him to advance towards South Pacific. (Noumea, NZ and even Australia). This will require massive amount of troops and it makes this gameplan so much "easier".

Let's just say that he will be moving towards allied trap! Also, those places will require decent garrisoning and if he does not do it than I can pick his units up one by one.

Third problem is the blockade. As said he does already control Pago Pago and Canton Island. These bases will make it hard to get units through without convoys being spotted. I would estimate that he will move on with more invasions in this part of the map.

However there are few things I have already put in action...

1) I will build up Palmyra and more importantly Christmas Island. These bases will keep him in his toes since there will always a constant threat of allied offensive. (1 US RCT, 1 CND Brigage, 2 Base Forces and 1 Aviation Base unit are on their way towards these destinations)

2) I have given orders to move units to Noumea. 1 NZ Brigade (Nandi) and CD Unit from Geelong are on their way. Next turn I will propably send additional NZ Brigade from Auckland towards Noumea.

Naval firepower at this part of the map isn't great. At Sydney there are remains of the Dutch surface fleet along with NZ/Australian navy. Not much but it has to be enough for time being.

I have already started building up for the operations in CenPac. The 40th US Division along with 2 US RCT units are stationed at Midway. (More units are enroute... few Base Forces and such...)

Hilo airfield will be build up too just incase he thinks he can land at Pearl Harbour. This is the primary thing. I really need to have these defenses setup first before I can think anykind of an offensive action.

I will propably release 1 US Division from West Coast to be part in CenPac offensive. All the Canadian brigades will join in too.

So, Rob you think I should invade Wake Island in the spring of 1942??? This is a two way street... since if I go for Wake Island too early on he will reinforce Markus Island as soon as I capture Wake Island. That's is why I'am hesitating to go there too early. I think simultaneous offensives againts Markus Island and Wake Island are in order to maximize the suprise of these landings.

As I said there are 2 key things to keep in mind too...

1) I really need decent and capable CV Fleet in these actions. By the looks of things in this aspect the earliest I can "safely" go there is late 1942 or early part of 1943.

2) I also need a lot of LBA fighters which can put up an fight since imminent Japanese counter assaults are to be expected. This also delays these offensives to late 1942 or early part of 1943.

These are my main concerns here. I will definately use this plan unless something unexpected will happen.

More I think about this strategy there also 2 more things I need to do in order to succeed...

1) Actually 2 other spearheads are required as decoy! (At least one serious offensive too) The propable target would be Gilberts Islands/Canton Island/Solomons or/and Timor/Burma.

2) I cannot afford to loose any of my major US Naval assets. These operations will require plenty of naval firepower.

These are concerns and plans but at the moment I have my hands full in China. I cannot loose the place. I have withdrawn my forces from Homan to Sian. It will at least take 2 turns for the Japanese army to reach Sian and hopefully by then my reinforcements from Yenen and Chungking have arrived. The supply situation isn't too great at the moment and something must be done soon.

Oh, I saw you are looking for another PBEM opponent... I guess you are hungry for some action Rob

I've actually got a game of my own vs. Erstad, but I'll limit my comments for both your sakes.

My only suggestion (for any PBEM game as Allies), is that you give it a month or 4 before setting up grand plans of conquest. Long range plans are very necessary in this game. And thinking like you have 4 years to play it, is important. But honestly, it has been my experience in my PBEM games as Allies, the first several months are mostly a matter of damage control.

A plan to capture CentPac is great. But if it means you hold back two Divsions from Noumea because you want to re-invade wake in April, it's a mistake. Potentially, your troops just end up sitting in Pearl prepped for Wake. While he invades Noumea with 2 Divions. and just one of yours could have saved it. Or worse, your Wake re-invasion is predicated on heavy air-cover. But your opponent gets lucky or whatever, and suddenly you have 2 CVs sunk. Your invasion of Wake just got pushed back 6 until 1943.

Just my opinion, but I think you have actually have curb Japan's aggression, before you start planning an offensive. You've got lots of time. Use it to simply wear him down. "You'll know" when things are more less slowing down. THEN is the time to start planning offensives (because you may need to build in a few months to recapture some of the important bases you lost).

I do appreciate your comments and views Feinder.

You have actually convinced me to send more troops to Noumea. As soon as I can get the turn back from Erstad I will dispatch 1 additional NZ Brigade from Brisbane to Noumea.

I also agree that the key to whole CenPac campaign is suprise element. If he gets intel about it than....

I learned from my other PBEM that patience is the key. There is no need to hurry too much since it is much better to wait and be ready.

The main concerns at the moment are 1) China (This place will get messy soon). and 2) The blockade Japanese have made in South Pacific. (Need to get more supplies to Australia... there are some big convoys moving in from India but that is not enough)

I need also secure perimeter at Pearl Harbour and Christmas Island, Palmyra.

India is also an priority. The beaches there needs to be strenghtened.

I don't know what you think about Erstad?... but it really seems that he is careful and capable opponent. He moves in with huge force and tries to overwhelm you quickly.

Yes im in WitP withdrawl mode .. not nice

BUT got a game starting with 2ndACR .. whoohoo .. a very experienced player i think, should be great fun. AND trying to replay an earlier turn with miller to see if the leaders come back. so i may be resurrectiong my miller thread or starting a new one vs the mighty texan :)

Feinder is probably right. I can be way over agressive with someone elses game .. and Noumea is crucial to hold imo. canton and pago arent a real threat till they get to size 4.

Looks like you can actually keep Singapore for few days from now. Every day you can is bonus for you. AVG (I guess it's AVG in Chungking)seems to do fine too...and you almost got that CVE. So not all is gloomy..at least not yet....

I've come to like multi-day turns now. In my campaign against AI I'm now 1 BB and 3 CVEs short after couple of bit too optimistic operations. Didn't lose single BB or CV before I switched to 2-day turns because with 1-day turn you can easily recover from your operational mistakes.

Yes, hopefully Singapore will hold few more days. The supply situation isn't great (around 8000 left) but...

The whole AVG isn't at Chungking. Just 1/3 of it and rest are at Mandalay. The rest of fighter cover at Chungking are left overs from Philippines.

Some of his CV's are still near DEI. Hopefully I can manage one lucky strike but I ain't counting on it.

Multiple day turns are great as you said ...Simply, you can loose a lot since you just can't micromange everything

Btw, when do we see Sardaukar in PBEM action?

Like I said, I don't want to tip anybody's hand, but your assesment :

"But it really seems that he is careful and capable opponent." - True

It seems I was correct with my assesment. It seems I really need to move and plan carefully if I want to succeed

So, Rob you think I should invade Wake Island in the spring of 1942??? This is a two way street... since if I go for Wake Island too early on he will reinforce Markus Island as soon as I capture Wake Island. That's is why I'am hesitating to go there too early. I think simultaneous offensives againts Markus Island and Wake Island are in order to maximize the suprise of these landings.
not any more ! .. i was carried away when i posted that

as to make the SW pac took tempting ?? leaving it ungarrisoned would be a start BUT how can u let japan know that ? tricky trying to draw another player into the game you want to play. and i suspect he's too good for that.

well good withdrawl from Homan there .. timely too. might be thinking about leaving yenen with a token force and coming back to save Sian with as much as you can. The road junction north of ichang is critical to sian defence too so look out for any attacks on ichang too.

Oh dear singapore is creaking ( fingers crossed )

good luck

EDIT .. just re read your post .. ichang has alredy gone ?? whoops .. north china is buggered now im sorry to say .. road up from ichang is open untill the mountain hex with the junction and he just has to contest this to shut off sian .. having a few units across the river to the west of in ichang road will at least force him to garrison his supplies. EDIT

Probably when hell freezes...or when patch 1.8 is released...whichever is sooner...
But I just don't have time for such constant commitment, be it multi-day turns or not !

Anyhow, at least you have been able to keep Singapore until now..but it seems to be only days from downfall. After that it's just guesswork where he's going to steamroll next...
Good thing that you remembered to send those fighters from Philippines to China, it's about only place those short-legged ones can be evacuated. This early China is quite short of fighter cover.
