Not available (no cable in area!!).

The area i live in although maybe 20 miles (as bird flies) from the center of Dallas, is pretty rural although developing at an incredible rate (i.e., they just finished building one large shopping center, and are building 4-5 more shopping centers just past the end of the road i live on. There are maybe dozen or so smaller areas under development within 1 mile of these new shopping centers. There was one large shopping center there before we moved in (2 years ago). Apparently, 4 years ago, these areas were all pastured (well, until 12 months ago MOST of it was pasture.)

Ah, urban sprawl...never fear, you WILL be assimilated. BWAHAHAHA.

The good news is at that point you will have cable and cable internet available.

That happened to our town about 15 years ago, shortly after we bought our house. The prices have been spiraling upward out of control ever since. If we had to buy our house now, we could never afford it.

The Oriskany is going down now. I just saw her on CNN News. Her flight deck was under water to the superstructure. She's going down bow first. They said it'll take a couple of hours to sink her.

You'll get cable soon then. Have you checked out satellite internet? I have been told it is much improved.

Also, you might have your phone company come out and test your DSL modem.

Aging phone lines can be a problem too. On my cable service, we were having intermittent connection problems and after they replaced some of the cable its been great.

Penguins have souls?!?!

Sounds like a perfect subject for a Threadian discussion of philosophy: how many penguin souls will fit in a refrigerator? I submit that the correct number is: "As many as *really* want to fit".

OK - tried posting multiple (4-5x) times from work - and the message would disappear into cyberspace, never to be seen again...

Now i'm home (a miracle - i got out in 7.5 hours, which i think is a world's record for me) so i can try posting some of the replies.

The wireless internet is a local company, not associated with the phone company. Since it's wireless, no phone lines involved. i might have the ISP guys come out and check out the antenna.

I've also been considering the satellite internet, but my brother has that and is not terribly impressed with it, i think.

On the other hand, i am going to call up the phone company who just ran the fiberoptic cable through the yard and see when i can sign up for that...

As for the Chinese Hacker attack - AFAIK, it was aimed at US Government sites. It managed to shut down Walter Reed's internet access when i was studying there for a couple of weeks. This was maybe 5 years ago or so.

We had wireless internet at my work for a while. It did pretty well, but eventually our signal degraded. Never did find out why. The ISP put in a land line for the same amount per month.

I would definitely call your phone company. They have an awful lot of options for getting you on the internet, many of which are quite competitive (at cost per kbps) with other transports (like cable). Don't let them force you to talk to residential people. Get in touch with the business guys.

Hey dtravel - did you ever figure out the file i sent (and the line where the ship repair points is)? - i checked and it is ok... There is an extraneous "52 repair points" at the very top, which was the value when i only had 1 day of data...

!!!!!!!!

Oh blast, apparently i sent you the wrong file!!

No wonder you were confused. Arrrrghh...

Ignore pretty much everything in that file - some of it was from the file i meant to send which i was using as a template to type in data for the dates 10/13 onwards. The file that should have been sent was for 10/9 to 10/12 (iirc) - which i resent this a.m. just before rushing off to work (not much said in the e-mail as i was in a rush...)

The file i sent this a.m. should be correct, but i will RE-CHECK it when i get home. i also spent about 2 hours entering data for the second file (10/13 onwards) which i have not yet completed. Hopefully will finish that tonight.

My abject apology for the confusion.
