Don't fret. Most allusions here get ignored, unless it is Python or MST3k.

For instance, if I were to mention that British cruisers were called "Handbaskets", few would catch the allusion to "going to hell in a handbasket". It's just the way it is.

Gentleman! You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!

Almost 5 hours and no one gets the Dr. Strangelove reffernce. Sad.

Now, now, that one has been used on at least 2 occasions in the past on The Thread, so is considered a "rerun". Last person to use it was even accused of plaigarism!

Morning Tithe!!!

Another Glorious Day At the Money Pit!!!!!

Latest Money Pit Story:

i hate to drive my wife's car - something always happens to it when it do (or so it seems).

My wife wanted to borrow my car (for hauling something) so i drove her's to my workplace. Sure enough, on the way back, the CHECK ENGINE light comes on.

After finally finding someone who will work on it, and $X hundred dollars later, it turns out that either mice or squirrels made a nest under the air cleaner, obstructing the air flow and chewing through the vacuum line!!

So, now, in addition to the SnakeAway (a hellish concoction of mothballs and sulfur) spread around the house, wife is going out to buy coyote urine to spray on her car's engine...

And speaking of snakes, there is apparently a rather large Water Mocassin living at the property line creek. I have only seen pics, but it is apparently as big around as my forearm, and over 6 feet long... for those of you unfamiliar with the Water Mocassin, it is considered "highly poisonous".

i'm hoping it will keep the squirrels/mice at bay, but then again, i don't really want it hanging around the house.

OK - here's the one in the creek. Hard to get a scale, but the branches in the foreground are maybe around inch across - thickest diameter of snake around 4-5 inches. The head is barely visible in the upper left corner (just enough out of the water to breath).

i didn't actually get to see the snake, just the site later. The snake ID was by a person who has lived in the area many years.

Yep, that's a biggie. They generally stay pretty close to the water, so as long as you don't mess around in its territory, you'll be ok. They will come after you if you invade it.

I whole heartedly agree. Normally I believe in live and let live, but with young grandchildren around on occasion I would be proactive. A shotgun should do the job nicely.

Growing up in Houston, or rather the bayous nearby, we saw these on and off and knew better than to ever go into the water. They are indeed extremely aggressive.

If my grandmother were still alive I would just send her over. See killed rattlesnakes on a regular basis with her garden hoe right up to the ripe old age of 90.

Tropical Depression 1 has formed in the Carribean. Hello 2006 Hurricane season. However, we need the rain.

Is it (the tropical depression) named "Alberto" yet? Florida still is in recovery mode where I live.

Unfortunately, you'll be even more in recovery mode when hurricane season 2006 is over. Don't mean to seem snide, but they're saying it could be as bad as '05...

Well, normally the Grandchild is about 1500 miles away - this was the first (but not last) visit.

So far i have not seen the snake - just pics. i have looked. i did see something (i was told) was a Yellow-Bellied Water Snake (non-poisonous).

My wife is freaked by snakes and would *probably* like to see me "take them out"...

Well, it COULD be as bad as '05 - but the estimates i've seen predict about 1/3 less number of storms. Strangely, they are more accurate in predicting numbers of storms in a season (usually +/- 10%) than whether or not it will rain next week!

Hey - what time zone is the forum on? It seems to be 3 hours off Central Daylight Time, so not GMT... Greenland? Iceland?

Hmmm - i had never set it before, and it had defaulted to -3 hours, i guess for the convenience of all the forum users located in the Central Atlantic Ocean...

Now reset to "0" - which is apparently GMT.

"Good" snakes would help keep down the mouse problem. They're as good or better than cats, because they can get places cats wont go.

Must change time zone for mine to EDT.

TD 1 is still a TD. "They" are saying it will go in north of Tampa as a TD or tropical storm. "They" are saying the winds should not be a real problem with a slight chance of tornados. The prediction for central Florida is 2 to 4 inches of rain (and we need it badly). We've already had several bad brush fires (some of which destroyed homes). Also smoke caused road closures last month (including parts of I-95) and contributed to auto accidents with fatalities.
