Fantastic book, fantastic. Films are a darn good effort too.

My favourite characters - Nazgul.

Ah - That explains your close friendship with the Witch King of Angmar!!

Tolkien was pretty clear that the books were not a metaphor nor an allegory. He did admit that his own experiences colored his approach to writing the story and some elements of the story.

EDIT PS: My favorite characters are the elves.

Perhaps metaphor is too strong a word, but one couldn't possibly miss the situation of the reluctant hero, who leaves his idealic home, in a beatiful land of green pastures, to go away and fight a war in a horrible and wasted land, while the others stay at home blissfully unaware of what is really happening. Sounds much like the English during WWI.

Also, the fact that the enemy employeed huge industrialized weapons to wage war on the more niave and innocent is pretty close to the mark as well.

So perhaps the statement I should have made was that Tolkiens work was heavily influenced by his experiences in WWI.

That is Major Anders "Andy" Lassen VC, the most decorated Danish soldier in WWII. He fought in the Commandos, and fell in action (earning his VC posthumously) at Lake Comacchio, Italy on April 8th, 1945.

There was a Danish commando unit in WWII?

I'd say it's still pretty accurate today. Ever see anyone blown apart? You tend not to forget it.

If we are self monitoring maybe Bruce decided to perform the reprisal on himself, himself.

LOL Robert. You got it. Angmar and me are close mates. For example he informed me where Nik's CV's would be allowing me to pull off the 5 hex attack which forced Nik to surrender

Watch out - with the forces of Darkness on Speedy's side, you could be in trouble...

or does a player just get the forces of Darkness to aid them when playing the Japanese?

Guys regarding LoTR - what are The Silmarillion and Forgotten Tales like? Worth a read?

Just to kick some thoughts around, my personal view is that Tolkien was affected as much by the industrial revolution as WWI. Certainly the latter influenced him, but even more so it was watching the beautiful green fields and woods of his own land bulldozed.

Silmarillion absolutely. It's a collection of stories in rough chronological order that provide very interesting chronicles of the First and Second ages, as well as creation and the fall of Melkor, the original Evil Power.

I've not read the Forgotten Tales yet.

errrk - tough decision. You can get a lot of info about the background in LOTR. On the other hand, i think there was a reason they were never published by JRR. They do not read anywhere near as well as LOTR.

They are short stories as opposed to an epic novel. Sometimes they are a bit dull because they aren't really demonstrating a plot or suspense but rather chronicling history.

I find them very interesting *because* of the context they give LoTR. Without LoTR, they would be pretty dull in and of themselves....well, except the story of Turin Turambar. That's a great story.

Interesting guys. Thanks.

A work colleague aired similar views. He was saying it was great to 'fill in the world of Middle Earth' but that they were not as readable as LoTR and there were many many names etc.

Knowing me I will buy them. The main problem in my life is time. I have 8 books to read and about 7 computer games to play and finish (excluding PBEM WW2 games!) = I may finish all of these in about 25 years time
