Here we have it -

THE NAKED (DEAD) ARMADILLO!!!

This poor rascal was part of a population explosion of armadillos we had in our yard this spring. However, we also have a population of bobcats, and possibly (probably) a cougar. These beast consider armadillos as "possum on the half shell" and once they get ahold of an armadillo, the grab hold of its tail and yank. This leave the "shell" behind. In this case, i think it was just flipped over and devoured - and this is what we see here.

BTW, my wife insisted i use this pic, but forgot to e-mail it to me, so that was why we had the delay...

i am not really sure. The circumstances were a bit strange - i had taken her out to dinner (!!) and i was discussing the Naked Animal contest, and mentioned the other popular "dead animal" pics (well, popular to some, i guess...)

I said i was going to use her picture of an armadillo she had taken last year, and she insisted that i should use the much more bizarre flattened (well, collapsed) armadillo pic she made later. To be honest, i hadn't really seen the pic until she e-mailed it to me a few minutes ago. She thought it was more bizarre, and thus more fitting to be used on The Thread, i guess...

Anyway, this thing's kin are still living around the house and digging up the lawn on occasion. They are almost blind and use their sense of smell to keep them out of danger. This doesn't work too well, especially when dealing with cars... there are Texans around that claim they've never seen a LIVE armadillo (just squashed ones on the side of the road...)

BTW, my dog HATES these things, and one almost came to greef this weekend when it decided it was deep enough in his hole to escape. It wasn't, but fortunately for the armadillo, the dog was on a leash and restrained...

Status: offline 		For those of you who haven't seen a LIVE armadillo, here's one. I suspect this might be the guy who the dog ALMOST got...

Notice, if you stay downwind from it and are quiet, you can walk right up to these rascals!




EDIT: From what i can tell, this is the Nine-band armadillo, popular in leprosy research. This things can carry leprosy, so i've avoided actual physical contact.

Well, there's one that has dug a hole that goes under the slab foundation, which is not actually IN the garden (hidden behind shubbery), but close enough. Most folks will kill them as pests, but i figure they eat the d@mned fire ants (and about nothing else does...), and so far it's been live and let live.

The dog is a male miniature Schnauzer, who is fearless when it comes to other animals (not good when there are bobcats, cougars, and coyotes about). We also have a female miniature Schnauzer, who is "alpha", but a shameless coward in these matters. She will bark, and then run away to fetch us to deal whatever problem she has (or hide)!

BTW, some years back, the students at University of Texas voted to change their mascot from the Longhorns to the Armadillos. The Board of Trustees vetoed the vote.

I guess the male students decided that having steers represent them wasn't terribly masculine...

P.S. Rtrapasso your 'alpha' dog sounds wicked. "Bark. Bark. Bark." Threat comes nearer....dog retreats indoors to find adult whilst threat moves nearer to deal with barking dog

Reminds me of a guy I work with. His dog (Black Labrador called Spike. Very cute) is not very guard like to say the least. Anyhow. Guy at work had planted more grass seed in back garden. One day he notices a Pheasant is our there eating at his grass seed! Back door is opened. Spike sits there. "Go on Spike get the bird. Kill!" Spike looks up at work colleague with loving eyes. "Spike get the **$*%£$^*£* bird". Spike continues to sit there. Work mate has to get shoes on and chase bird away.

Moral of the story:

Get a dog which can be a guard dog also.

Not TCU. When i was going to school, Texas Tech was a powerhouse! I *think* they were rated #6 in the country when we played them my last year (i know they were in the top twenty...) Of course, this was in the early 70's... No, my school was even smaller than these two. We did stand a fair chance of beating TCU some years (but it wasn't a sure bet).

Here's another clue: we were the only other school with TCU in the conference a few years back NOT disqualified for the championship due to recruitment scandals, so we had a 50/50 chance to take the championship (but didn't). This was shortly before the conference was disbanded, i think.

Well, the male dog takes his job of guarding VERY seriously. We have an octagonal room with a window seat and he has about 270 degrees of visibility around, and he spends most of his time watching, or guarding the back yard from squirrels (and armadillos). He will go after the armadillos, but AFAIK they have stymied him be either being quick to get out of the yard, or quick to wedge themselves into somewhere that he can't get at them very well.

The alpha female will come running to help bark at stuff when he is at the window once he sounds the alarm. She also likes to chase squirrels, but nothing larger than that. If an armadillo shows up, she usually comes to get us and leaves the male to deal with it, or she will bark at it from a distance if she is feeling exceptionally brave (and if the male dog is between her and the armadillo). She is very unusual in many respects, and we have a small sign saying "Warning: Strange Dog" that we found appropriate.
