Actually they do (or they did). They used to rent it out to high school football teams on Friday nights. It was truly amazing to me that a high school game could fill a good part of the stadium.

They also used it for one of the Superbowls.

My ex-brother-in-law was a big time highschool star football player. They used to routinely fill a stadium of 30,000. But football is HUGE in Texas. One time, his team even sprung a player from jail so he could play for the team in an important game.

Well, athletics had a positive cash flow at Rice forty years ago anyway. For some reason, both Texas A&M and UT played Rice in Houston every year, and the statium was always sold out for both games. Kind of depressing for the home team however.

On the other hand, it was kind of like playing the Allies in the first year: One year in the 60's we actually beat A&M (the only victory that year as I remember) and everyone felt good for at least a couple of years.

Well, i don't know that they ever filled all 73000 seats at Rice Stadium, but i think they got crowds in the mid-high 40000 range most of the time (iirc).
