Playing the Japanese I really hate those annoying intel reports.
38th Div loaded on such and such Maru moving to Manila.

By resetting the home base to your intended destination, and not chosing the base as your final movement. Instead pick a hex that is one move away, that is not a base.
Set the TF on retirement, and it moves to your intended destination without the risk of it's location being reported.

Since the intel report is generated during the Japanese phase it allows me to see who is reported that turn.
Shouldn't the Allied report be generated during their turn?
Now I wonder if this report can have reports deleted before sending it to the another player in PBEM. Delete the unwanted report and resave the file. This doesn't seem cricket.

Another good idea is to plan with Home Defense and Kwantung Army for locations, you otherwise do not plan to take.
Deleting from the report is just evil.

UM , you really shouldnt be reading the allied intel report as japan, I'd consider that 'cheating' by any measure.

And modifying it ! my god .. thats a hideous thought.

The Intel reports are generated during the combat replay. So it doesn't matter what you do to the Intel file, the Allied player gets a new one generated when he runs the combat replay.

You may not be happy with the info that is given, but that is part of the historical background of the game - the Allies were better at intercepting and reading Japanese communications than the Japanese were Allied communications.

But for the most part, the Allied Intel isn't that great. Certainly I rarely see reports with critically useful info on them. Most reports that I see are repetitive and of little value - such as the infamous "Radio transmissions detected at Tokyo".

Never-the-less, I still collect all the Intel reports and put them into a spreadsheet so that I can keep track of the Japanese dispositions in a general sense.

Well thats a relief ( not that any of my opponents would do it ).

as for spread sheet intel files .. im just not that organised . Tend to rely more on air recon( especially after you get the F5 Lightning, although the dutch 'falcon' ? is quite good if too slow and the FK51's are useless, almost) and the spoofing of kwantung and home defence forces can make a nonsense of the allied intel anyway.

EDIT .. 2000 posts David ! congratulations ! EDIT

There are two parts of tracking the Intel reports via spreadsheet that I have found valuable. First is the location of units. Over time I find the location of most of the enemy units. I can also tell if they have moved by doing a search. For example, if I want to know if the Japanese paratroops pose a potential threat I simply search on "paratroop" and I'll find out where the units have been reported. If they show up at a Frontline base where my recon has been indicating "auxillary" air units, then I get wary about a potential air drop.

The second part is a comparison of the "preparing for" reports and the location of a unit. If a unit is reported to be preparing to invade Canton Island and that unit has been consistantly reported as being in the Philippines then I don't have a lot to worry about. However, if the unit is at the nearest Japanese Frontline base, then I get more concerned. However, the vast majority of "preparing for" reports that I get are from units in China - and I don't need those reports to know what Tophat is planning...

Even Jap intel is useful... or at least not always useless.

Almost 50% of the time, when 'radio is detected at XXX',, if XXX is a port putting the mouse over this port will show the ships in the base as a recon would (by the way I have only once seen a BB like that, and never CV).

More intersesting are reports of 'radio transmission detected at (coordinates X, Y)" outside a base, I have been able to attack a convoy detected like that, or to know Chinese units were moving in a given area (OK, I could have known it with the W key but I find it gamey).

I guess this also works for the Allied side.
