Am I wrong to think that a platoon leader squad E0 should be able to call the fire of his own platoon's light mortar squad E5 if in visual or radio contact with that squad, regardless of whether the platoon leader squad has Higher HQ Link contact with A0? This is with C&C off if it matters.

Is this realistic thinking, or not?

What are the historical implications involved?

I bet this has already been discussed, if so, would someone one point me to a thread...

It is right the platoon leader should get quicker response time faster then a fwd obs im thinking . When the obs calls the strike you dont realy know how close the mortar is to the target. Where the ao of the platoon does know and will call the closer mortar to the target. And as every one knows the closer the 50 or 60 mm mortar to the target the more damage is caused. It really pisses me when i try and call the strike with the platoon leader but his response time is longer then the obs if he can even call the strike.

I though light mortars attached to a platton could ONLY be given firing orders by the platoon leader, not even the FO....either way, the FO would contact the platoon leader, who in turn contacts the mortar battery right? It�s "his" battery(of course it�s really the Army�s battery, but whatever....

)and if someone else starts giving them firing orders then they might be out of ammo when the platoon leader needs them.

How does this work in real-life armies? Anyone know?

robot - good point about the response time.

I am concerned to know why the Plt. Ldr. needs a Higher HQ Link to call fire from his OWN plt's. mortar. Does he require chain-of-command approval, or is this just an oversight in the game's mechanics. I bet the Wizard himself could answer this last one...

Bug. Fixed several times. Keeps coming back. Plt. Ldr. should not need higher contact.

I ran Battalion S2 fire mission/patrol maps for 2d Battalion 3d Marines 1969 - 72. All mortar fire required battalion approval via radio IF the fire was being directed at a target coordinate that was not previously approved for that particular firing unit. You'd be amazed at the number of times a 2d Lt would request fire on a friendly patrol that was operating outside the Battalion perimeter.

We have to remember that in WWII very few armies had radios at platoon levels. Many did not even have radios at company level. Many armies relied on field phones (real good if you DID NOT MOVE) or even runners. To think that a FO hundreds of yards from a platoon mortar could even communicate with it (except maybe in prepared defensive positions) is just not happening. Even then there was only so much wire to go around and the PBX switch board that would be nesasary to connect ever tube on the board to one FO would be pretty amazing.

Expecting Mr. Wood (or any other designer) to spend many, many hours trying to program this detail seems a little lacking in cost effectiness IMHO.

If we can get the platoon leader to call his own mortars shots (even 150 yds away is streching commo IMHO, ajusting fire by having a couple of men run back and forth to the mortar

) I think that if we are not too "GAMEY" we can live with the compromise.

I find that if the platoon leader is in an adjacent hex to his light mortar and neither is under fire nor suppressed, he should be able to direct the fire of his lt mortar. He is the only observer who can redirect the fire. It is this function that is so valuable.

Also, don't forget that the ability of the leader is contingent on his experience rating.
And the effectiveness of the mortar fire is increased if the platoon leader has LOS on the target and if the range is small. Generally ranges of less than 6 hexes offer the greatest returns.

Finally, all of this only applies to lt mortars that are integral to the platoon and not those that are a formation contained in a company.
