right? This means I could have a 1000 planes at an airbase just the size of the airbase might matter as long as I have enough aviation support then I'm fine. Does this seem like it might be unrealistic for some of the small atolls or Islands?

There is indeed NO maximum to the number of planes stationed on an AF, but there is a penealty for flying missions from such an overstacked AF (only 50-60% will actually fly missions at one time).

Houserules are needed to keep the number of AG at any AF in check (max number is 50* AF size)

If planes > AF x 50 then
25% fly penalty.

If planes > AF x 100 then
50% fly penalty and
there is a bombardment group on the horizon.

The rule governing this has a weak spot ... effectively meaning that only 50% of your aircraft will fly ... When we were testing, no one thought of simply throwing so many aircraft at a base that the fact 50% would only fly was meaningless.

Rule should have been up to 200% capacity only 50% fly, beyond 200% capacity only transfer missions fly but hindsight is perfect.

In a thread somewhere else I sugested:

AF size [squared] x 10 (or some other multiple) be used to set the limit.

With 10 you get:

1=10
2=40
3=90
4=160
5=250
6=360
7=490
8=640
9=810
10=1000

Currenlty 50 fighter planes can operate out of a size 1 AF with no penalty.

Strange definition of "short" you have there Nik.

Having seen some awful fields (consider that thing on Batan Island Japan found inadequate even for single engine fighters) and photographs of many others,

I find it hard to imagine a field small enough that 50 is unrealistic. Only some wierd mountaintop things in the Viet Nam era would be candidates - and they could not handle any normal plane in the first place. I think the minimum formula would have to allow 30 times AF size - and I think 30 times (AF size squared) might be much more realistic. And I think you could pick 40 or 50 and be just as valid.

There is no reason that a base should be limited to a single airfield. Except for the atols there is no reason to presume this is true.

How many airplanes could be based in the San Fransico hex for example?

Just to cover the "bases" for the less familiar....airfields are abstracted in the game i.e. the base hex in question can represent multiple airfields, not a single airfield. Another FYI regarding size 1.....you can support up to 50 planes without penalty yes....but you can't launch any attacks. You need minimum size 2 for offensive ops.

I know they can fly local CAP from an AF(1). FYI, it seems to be "not as effective" tho (fewer sortie).

Something I've never bothered to test, can you fly LRCAP from an AF(1)?
