I have a couple of problems with surrender treaties.

I am playing as France and because I always want money, I include large sums of it in my peace treaties in the fomr of payments and reparations.
Approximately 90% of the time when I do that, I discover after the treaty is ratified that the other side doesn't have the money they just agreed to pay me.

Am I missing how to prevent that?
Same goes with colonies. They will agree to convey colony units that they do not have.

It's impossible to predict how much money or even colonies a player might have when a treaty is ratified in the future. There should be a glory penalty applied to a nation whenever it cannot fulfil a treaty clause -- you can look for this either in the Treaty Report on the turn on which the penalty was applied (which is the turn on which the clause could not be fulfilled) or in the nation's Glory History. I have been considering a rule change that would allow nations to go into debt in order to pay off their treaty clauses and loans.

It is often difficult to get money from a nation via terms-of-surrender because a nation that just lost a war is often short of income. It often works better to ask for a smaller sum per turn over a long number of turns.

As for the colonies, I had thought that the colony-quantity-chooser was programmed to limit your quantity choice to the actual number of colonies the player had at the time. If this isn't working I'll try to address that for a future patch. This wouldn't guarantee that the nation would still have the colonies when the Cede Colonies clause comes into effect.

Thanks.
There is a glory penalty for those countries that fail to pay, but I have had lump sums go unpaid and I would think that the losing nation wouldn't be able to agree to pay 300 if it only had 200 in its coffers. I agree that forcing them to take loans would be appropriate and realistic.

I have had a couple of treaties for colonies where I am told on the next turn that the other nation had insufficient colony units to pay.

A workaround would be to wait for a month, before you set up your terms of surrender with the defeated nation.

Thus, you can check (in the country details list) what they have still got, and (in the view treaties section) what they have to cede to the other victorious nations. The difference is at your disposal ...

Another and highly useful option is to take extended reparations...take so many percent over so many years. This gives steady cash flow in addition to your own resources.

Oliver,
Is your avatar a photo from the Austerlitz reenactment?
If so, I was there too. I was with the 21eme de Ligne. We were part of Vandamme's division for the event.
I just committed to attend the Jena reenactment in October.

Cambronne, yes, who would not recognise the snow of Austerlitz ?

This is our combined peloton of the German 22e, the Maltese 19e and the Southern French 18e.

We were somewhere on the right flank, but don't ask me which "army corps" ...

Cheers,

grenadier Sans-Souci

Hi Eric
yes, you can ask for as many colonys as you want, it does not matter if the nation has any or not, you just won't get them later

before you give your terms, check the nations status ?

see how many of this or that it has, before you demand something from them

when a nation gives into a couple of nations, it may be better to wait a turn, to see what the other nations took

One little trick I find useful is to always move up the effective date of a treaty condition by one month. The default date is always two months ahead, instead of one month (the minimum)

If you were on the right then we were pretty far apart as my unit was on the left.
I thought the whole event was great.

Although I did have a Russian shoot a ramrod over my head.

Anyway, pleased to meet you.

Cheers

Good thinking on delaying the month of implementation. Very clever.

I like the option of having the use of a province. That way you get money plus stuff. One time I got a province that had two divisions building and they joined me upon arrival. I garrisioned the provincal capital with one. When the province reverted, the garrision showed up at my nearest province. Such loyalty; makes me misty eyed.

Asking for colonies and future money is very iffy in my experience.

I also like to borrow units. This actually works better than extended peace terms because how are they gonna attack you if you have their army? Once Archduke Charles and his corps fought for me a year, then defected to me at the end of the year. Again, such loyalty, it makes me misty.

I love using enemy fleets to go in harms way to blockade ports. Only takes one ship; if they get sunk - too bad. Afterall, until recently they were trying to kill me. Besides, saves me killing them later.

Actually, non-payment and delayed payment of treaty obligations were not uncommon. I;m thinking of Prussian foot-dragging after 1807.
