So, I was looking for pics on the internet and it got me thinking. Warships always (or almos always) manage to look striking and beautiful. So why not make a thread about it?

Rules of the thread. You can pick only one ship and ONE SHIP ONLY per era. You need to accompany your ship with a picture and a short commentary why you think it's beautiful.

There will be three era's.

prehistoric-1904
1904-1945 (dreadnought era)
1945-today (modern ships)

My two candidates are

IJN Yamato. The slightly swept back lines, the sloping foredeck and the compact superstructure all add up to a very beautiful package.

and

The Sovremenny class destroyers. Mostly because the very sleek hull lines with the very overcrowded superstructure and those massive sunburn tubes on the sides.

U.S.S. Lexington or Saratoga, prewar with the big stripe on the bridge and the yellow winged planes on their decks.

Hi,

1) Yamato & Mushashi,
2) Bismarck & Tripitz,
3) Iowa & New Jersey,
4) Essex carriers

Most of them are battleships

I think the vast majority of ships are beautiful, at least until the late sixties and the advent of box like floating offices that are being built nowadays. But these puppies stand out...

Extremely modern looking ship, but built before war.

Since there were no designs ever found for her all we have are artists drawings, but I love her simplicity and function. I give the the Sloop of War Ranger.

Since there is no accounting for taste, consider my next few posts with all the irony that you can pile on.

This one is a reeeeal beaaauuuty and has a lovely name that just trills gently off the lips.

This one is brought to you by the US "Truth in Naming Department" -- a little known office of the WW2 BuOrd. I give you USS Block Island II.
