small kb low on fuel after this raid - northern route too dangerous - torp planes + PT boats - going to Davao
Bataan taken
baby KB chased by US carriers - hopefully they missed my place - they have 2/4 hexes speed advantage - so it may be hot - i'll try to force them to burn their fuel in chase so they will be unable to strike
nells ordered to strike on 2 damaged cruisers in palembang
there is a movement like on highway close to singapore i fear he may sneak single transport with supply
good news -retalitory strike on kuantan hit almost empty airfield -all DB were moved to singora
also blockade of PI is almost 100% working - my naval forces hunted many ships - rest - almost all was hit by my bombers
singapore with so strong airpower is a pain in the ass

singapore with so strong airpower is a pain in the ass

Hi, i found that defensive position in Malaya skies can achive air victory.

Since every clever Allied player using his planes in the offensive actions his airfields are almost empty (no CAP no grounded planes) it could be good idea to ambush him with 60-80 Zeros and break his will to fight there. (it worked against Andy)

you may see i often use 60-80 fighters in one place but...
remember there are more planes in this mod - 2 spitfires + 4 hurris sqn + defiants + 2 beufighters +2 wirraways+ dutch
second there is whole AVG here and third there are sea hurricanes taken off CV - 3 sqn of them
there is no way a tactic from stock version to work
nominally he has 17 sqn of Fgt or FB in singapore + dutch it is over 200 of fighters
80 zeros can't break their will

1st day of heavy beating delivered to JPN
it is one thing to read that NIK mod has leaking cap and second one to see 30+ elite zeros unable to disrupt attack of 17 unescorted dauntless ( only 1 was shot down )
i fear that from one extreme ( stock version) we moved to second extreme -( Nik mod)
carrier battles will be extremaly interesting in this game - a lot of sunk ships should be seen

i gambled to stay with my forces one day longer at canton and i lost
i had some hope that US TFs sprinting from suva will be low of fuel and that battle will occur next turn but they managed to position well
overaggressivness costed me CVE ( second CVE is HD and 2 CVL are MD)
i have 30 fighters but can't lauch them
BTW i was very surprised to see devastators with range of 4

tomorrow assault on manila - it should be taken soon - but i still have no idea what to do with released forces. (2.2-2.5k)
reinforcing singapore is wrong way of thinking - 38th from HK will unload next day at khota baru and my forces will reach 2.5k-3.0k of strenght - enough - it will be my regional reserve force in case Andy realises how strong is he there
local air superiority is still in Andy's hands but it can be contested
there is no way to support with navy and Andy will have 2k + troops on rising forts
looks like unless i starve them there is no way to finish that campaign in malaya - with good luck i can take johore baru but there is no way i can cross river at singapore -with so strong enemy it will be massacre and our nice land combat engine will use shock attack on every troops - bridgeheads are unknown to matrix staff
if Andy will be smart he will rotate troops between Singapore and Johore and counterattack in good moment - i belive he is good enough player to see it - shame on me i noticed that so late

at scenerio beginning there is 40k supply at Singapore
I assume with so many ships at sea in last 3 weeks he could double that figure and he will be able to move troops and supply in as long as he keeps batavia secured
with so high supply he will fight for air superioirity by all means available - atrition fight for Japan with lowered supplies in this mod can be decisive - i hope i will be not the first player who will loose war in 42 during malaya campaign

so my next step will be taking Java - starting with batavia or going by southern borneo with 1 big operation - but i don't have so big transport lift

Question is - is Andy able to push me out of Malaya when he decides to reinforce with 1-2 good inf div within next month??? - i know it is weird but i'm still impressed with amount of changes in this mod - i doubt if Andy is fully ready to rethink whole strategic situation ???
1 bad result of my attack at Johore and Andy's counterattack can push me out of place - weird isn't it ??

there is no doubt - there will be no fight for india - there is doubt there will be any fight in burma in 1st half of 42

One good thing : i think i will end taking Japan player job and next game will be IS2 but as allied - i don't really have any clue how to solve the task Alikchi delivered to me
it is interesting game and obviously i will try to see what happens in DEI in next month
but i would bet all my money for allied player at this moment

So far I have only played as the Allies. In this game it seems to me that the Japanese cannot make too many mistakes from Day 1 or they could pay for them.
It seems that it is very bloody for both sides and I said so on Andy's AAR.
Do you think the Allied are a little too strong at the beginning??
I will wait till later in the year (after 1.8 and some more playtesting of IS) before I try this scenario.

i think they got far too many ground units too fast
andy brown's map is best way to stop blitz inland war

but look at numbers

in stock version there is sth like 500AP in malaya and still it takes many players quite long to bring it down - usually jap forces are +/- 2k AP strong

in IS i have 2.5-3k AP - as JAP forces are slightly stronger
enemy has over 2k AP + forts + river at singapore + air forces at least as strong as Jap ones

show me where operation was planned with amphibious elements without air superiority with low supply margin when there no number/quality advantage against defensor

we are equal with air strenght
there are 20+ fgt/FB sqn in close area + bomber force
strong CD guns cover airfields as well as good number of torpedo planes

i'm 50% stronger in land units ( in stock version Jap player is 3 times stronger)

simply adding same amount of forces changes multiples and favours defender
unless i take batavia i will be unable to stop supply / reinforcements flowing to Singapore

i did not check reinforcements for Andy but i wouldn't be surprised if they are bigger and earlier than in stock version
you need to put 2 inf div in Java fast till end of Jan 42 and Singapore is almost safe for next few months

i don't have supply / equipment for atrition war in DEI -- it is barely enough for blitz in stock version

normally your first decision is to increase zero production to sth like 200 and oscars 120-200
i don't have enough supply to start building up factories over 100 zeros and 80-100 oscars
and i'm forced to atrition fight in DEI

mistakes.... you are stronger but it seems that your margin of loss is even smaller than in stock version

i like concept of stronger navies and new ships but hate what i see in terms of land combat
with java supported by 2 inf div and with 1-2 div/bde units brought to SIngapore - there are many units in india to choose from - there is no way of taking Singapore in 1st half of 42 - even more
there is good chance of retaking malayas from japanese player
with lot of supply and so many units ( there are 49 units in Johore and Singapore) your forts will raise very very fast and i think as long as he is supplied he can build them faster than i can bring them down + what casualty rate should be expected when attacking fortified position without air superiority and with almost equal inf units ??????
i think it is sth Alikchi did not think long enough
and now they discuss how to save UK capitals - i wrote i will not play such game
i'm thinking for how long i will be able to play this game before I give up
if sth like this would be IRL there would be no war
it was report about weak defences in malaya and DEI which influenced Jap HQ about going for war

At least half of the troops present in malayas should be relocated in india and it should be players decision if he wants sending them to Singapore

500 AP at forts 5 needs 2.5k AP to counter and at lvl 9 4.5K is needed
2k AP at forts 5 needs 10k AP to counter and at lvl 9 18k is needed

consider this math with lvl 9 forts which will be in 2 weeks in Singapore + shock attack after river crosing ( i have never seen all troops crossing one day - so there should be 2-3 attacks done by perts of army)
looks like whole Southern AREA ARmy is not enough to attack Singapore

"IF" you get through Malaya and take Singapore, then Ragoon will be at level 9 fort and impossible to take and thus no break into Burma. Thus, India will be like the US West Coast and unreachable except for a possible raid.

It looks more like the China theater with better Allied resources and counter punch capabilities.

Any increase in Allied forces (naval, air, land) needs to be off set with about 3:1 increase by the Japanese to give them a chance. It looks like the Allies will be at Tokyo's doorstep by mid-43.

yes
sadly speaking i don't see any reason why to go for war in such military conditions
2-4 carriers can't offset beeing short by something like 10 divisions :-)

you are wrong war will be shorter as it will be maximum effort for taking Java & celebes - palembang will not be secured as well as java
there is not enough fighters to cover all resource places + supress Singapore and be present in Burma and pacific so allies will be free for strategic bombing immiedietaly after taking them

my usual answer is taking them is a very short time span - each with base force and designated fighter force

more resources damaged with less supply

simple OOB "on paper" comparison is not enough - for me Alikchi made very unbalanced mod in LCU /strategic deployment

there is big fun with navy and new toys but main idea is to secure land objectives

it is weird to me - i noticed p-38F lighting over Singapore in last days of DEC
how the hell i can fight for air superioirity there
1st assault for Johore was very bloody - forts reduced to 5 - numerical advantage less than 2:1 adjusted 1:5
looks like best idea is to withdraw

sweep mission bring 1:1 losses of my zero against his combined cap
my daitais are 60% strong now as losses are too high
i can't win skies over Singapore even if 80% of my fighters is used over Malaya

in iron storm due to several factors air war looks diffrently than in stock version
there are plenty of allied planes inmalaya bases and close to them
as I pointed earlier there are 20 fgt sqns in singapore after few days
and most of them are good and very good planes ( hurris/ spitfires /avg tomahawks , P38F )
ap 250-300 + we all know replacements rates are quite high
there is more 4e bombers at start too
+
there is no way japan can block singapore from supply within first months - i think it can be block after Java is taken
with 2k Assault value of troops there is no way to defeat malayan garrison in fight - it needs to be starved first
meanwhile allies can close any malayan airfield within range of their bombers and allied player is forced to attrition play what in stock version happens no sooner than in mid 42 when industry is built up and planes reserves are available
here is example from last combat report
with problem with dealing with bombers in this mod I already posted in thread in main forum
( durability of bombers are increased to lower bloodiness) - there is no way you can stop bombers from reaching targets - AA Changes from Nik mod are not implemented in this game
daily plane losses are 2x - 3x higher than in any stock game I played - despite NIK mod which decrease bloodiness

shape of zero fighters
there are no planes in the pool
factories are during building up
I can't fight air war for which allies are ready and for which they force me

Sorry Alikchi but i find this scenario too highly unbalanced to play as Japan
it is over for me -too many toys to allies too fast but what makes this mission impossible is deployment of these toys -

my prediction is that :
Manila will fall within next two weeks
PM will be taken within next two weeks
for burma 3-6 months will be needed and there is no way to cover it from air
Singapore will not fall sooner than 3-4 months after cutting off - if allied player is smart and reinforce Java with troops from india than Java will not fall sooner than in next 3-4 months
estimated fall of fortress - june- september 42
meanwhile Japanese fighter force will disappear - monthly losses that allies can survive costs japan more than monthly production

can Malayas be ignored in the opening ?- they can - but you need to be prepared that you will loose resources and HI from Bangkog and Saigon within first half of 42
also you will be unable to take palembang before Singapore is taken as well as resource island close to it - otherwise industries will be in ruins
Japan don't have enough supply to survive such events

I can withstand beating - in myPBEM against Raverdave see him taking initiative but also know that if there is no space for Japan at the beginning war will be very short
Japan will be in full retreat within next 12 months and war in my estimation will end in the end of 43

i want to thank all Witp -maniacs that support Alikchi and us players in this game

YOu amke some good points Sneer, but I don't think it will be so hard to isolate Singapore, and if it can be isolated, is there really a need to capture before Burma offense starts? For that matter, who says Burma must be taken?

You may well be correct, but Japanese carrier power seems very strong, and naval production has built in surplus right off the bat (I have finished the warship production tables - BTW) so a couple carriers can be accelerated and moved up a year or two. So I see Japan have major control over the water for quite some time.

That being said, I'm only into day 3 of my Iron Storm game so I'm not truly qualified to rebut your claims yet!

it is a matter of how fast you can take java - taking java before taking malayas or PI leaves you with too little troops available
you need to go there with troops from PI - i think that clearing luzon and minadanoa in 4 weeks is result i shouldn't be ashamed in the community - these are only troops available to you.
it means that they land java in late January or early Feb - in stock version - basing on easier map it takes at least month to clear java - here allies can double defenders forces easily - 2 months? maybe even 3 or 4 with really sgood defence
so we have april - since april Singapore is cut off but it has 100k-150k suppiles inside and extremaly strong cap - i actually lost fighter war in malaya in first 3 weeks of war - japan can't sustain such losses - allies can - i don't see eggageration in my calculations

Burma - Japan needs every bit of buffer zone for later stage of war
if you leave burma to allies you should forget about Hanoi , Bangkok and Saigan as HI and resource centers - they will be in ruins and you will be short on fighters by this time

killing Japan resources is a key to winning WITP - i managed to take under my boots china easily within 42 in my second PBEM only because i concentrated on resources
if you loose industrial potential of indochina you are toasted sooner than you think

I'm still a relative new comer so you are probably right. Once Alikchi and I pick up the pace we will find out in a few months.
