1957 Update - Ratings changes and the year ahead. (Using Beta 1 now...) The Pirates had a good spring training with both positive and negative ratings changes for some of their starters. - 37 year old Stan Musial saw his contact increase by 2, his power increase by 5, and his eye increase by 2. However, his speeds, hands and and arm all took decent hits. - 23 year old third baseman Gene Freese got a huge contact boost of +11, but his power and eye dropped by 2. - 22 year old Frank Robinson got a contact boost of 4, but his power dropped by 8 and his eye dropped by 6. His potential is still climbing, so this may still turn around again. - 23 year old Roberto Clement was this Springs biggest dissapointment. His contact decreased by 12(!) and his power dropped by 5. His eye, on the other hand, got a +13 boost. His potential sits at 100, and the Pirates front office is wondering if some time in the minors would do Roberto some good. In media related news, Pittsburgh is this years PSPN pick to win it all, quite a surprise given the Pirates 7th place finish last year. In additon, 3 Pirates have made the annual "Most Feared Hitters" list. - Frank Robinson, who is projected to bat .315 and hit 29 home runs. - Stan Musial, who is projected to hit .320 and belt 27 homers. - Eddie Mathews, who is projected to hit .275 and hit 34 home runs. In financial news, the Pirates now have the highest payroll in the majors. At nearly 21 million, the Pirates are 4 million dollars higher than the nearest team, the Cardinals, who have a payroll of 17 million. Kansas City has the lowest payroll of 11 million. Pittsburgh is now the new "New York" and has some high expectations to live up to.
