Goblin, you're missing my point. Public forums are for things of public interest. Sure anyone can post anything, but if everyone does so it will degrade the quality of the forums. Please be responsible.

One - getting hold of WB via PM is next to impossible. Alby knew this. Same with email, although Alby also has a problem with his email on top of that. Since WB somewhat regularly checks the forums, his reason to post was sound. Remember, he is also on a time sensitive project.

Two - Within forum rule limits, he can post what he likes, can he not? He did not break a rule, and got some valuable input, plus got to enjoy a thread with his friends. How is that degrading this forum? Any forum should be fun, and no poster should have to worry about getting jumped when he posts something he thinks should be posted.

Three - What constitutes public interest? Would, say, people posting to a thread constitute interest in a topic? If so, his qualifies...

I'm not trying to be a moderator. I have seen several 'private' threads on this forum, so I took the liberty of politely suggesting the use of an appropriate tool, namely Personal Messages, which is designed for that kind of thing, instead. I cannot understand why this sparks such a mass of negative responses. If I, a relatively unknown poster (I presume), used the forum as a personal tagwall then wouldn't that upset you?

Many of us have used the forum for a long time and can feel at 'home', enough so to be addressing comments directly to each other. But this creates clutter for others, so it's best to avoid it if you can. Why is this an unreasonable assertion?

By the way I hold no grudge against Alby if that's your concern (on the contrary I respect all those who invest time in improving SPWAW).

Then why don't you write a thread about that? This thread is a private message.

Why not use an instant messaging service if time is such an important factor?

I'm not saying that ONE PARTICULAR post is degrading the forum. I'm saying that the concept of people using the forum for all their Private Messaging needs will degrade the forum, and therefore such activity should be avoided.

Then the thread could have a proper topic, such as 'An open letter to Wild Bill concerning ....', thus inviting to review and discussion. Anyway I don't mean to officially complain that this one particular thread should conform to so-and-so. My initial post was not an attack, it was a suggestion. Once again, why is my suggestion that PMs be used for their logical (and only) application such a taboo? Do I have to wrap it in excuses before it is not considered offensive?

Why not use PM? Because that message system only applies to the two individuals, the sender and receiver. No option for others to "join in" with suggestions or comments. As this discussion involves reworking existing scenarios, the community at large may in fact be interested in the subject, and may indeed have suggestions for which ones to rework. Private Messaging is just that...PRIVATE. Since this is not a "super-secret cabal" of people trying to mess things up for everyone, why should Alby's message be considered "private" or "secret"?

Besides, why are you so "uptight" over the way this forum is used? It is, and has always been, a public forum for the discussion and enjoyment of all things SPWAW. This isn't some professional website or rigidly-controlled and moderated political discussion board, it's the equivalent of the local bar for us SPWAW'ers. Chill out and just ignore any of these threads that you don't approve of.

Well, nice to be the center of controversy! I've missed that a lot

I can understand concern about the forums becoming a spot for some private chit-chat that might be of little interest to others. In truth, however, I think most folks enjoy "listening in" on a private conversation. C'mon, now, admit it!

Then there is an air of "family" here, so that we tend to deal with one another on a more personal level.

There was, I think, enough public announcement in this post to warrant a public hearing. Alby is revamping some of my campaigns for the latest version of SPWAW which is admirable and deserves my and perhaps our thanks.

It is a time consuming job. I haven't had the time to do it. I appreciate Alby's efforts and have total confidence in his abilities.

So I have to defend this particular post, not because it is related to me, but because it deals with the game that brought us all here.

I think if he had asked about my health, my love life, or my financial well being, it might be interpreted as personal. I am in relatively good health, my love life is great and I'm as poor as ever.

Oops, got personal .

One more thing... there have been times when I have used the forum for a personal note requesting someone's response, whom I could not reach any other way. I do that rarely but it is nice to have this avenue to do such things.

And if we prefaced the title with "Personal-" it would probably be read more than most of the others.

I've been away far too long, Bob. Personal matters have had me buried with "situations" that have demanded all my time and more. Things are getting better and I will be back with a vengeance, just in time to enjoy and utilize the "enhancement" for some more new stuff!

Wild Bill, ever the diplomat :)

Now let's settle this. As of the relevance issue I have already argued that it could be posted as a proper public thread for discussion if need be, but this thread just looks like yet another irrelevant thread from the outside. Please note that my initial post was a one-liner, meaning that this was not a big complaint, and also I stated that I did not want to be 'imposing', which ensured that my suggestion was as weak and un-intimidating as a suggestion can be - thus hopefully conveying that this is not a serious issue. Now people are saying that I'm 'uptight', wear 'panties' and I'm accused of having 'moderator' dreams, and people take further light-hearted pot-shots in the other thread. What kind of behaviour is this? Should I take rubber gloves on when typing? Should I wrap my sentences in apologies and excuses for posting a corrective statement? Who are the real wannabe-moderators here?

Definitely not, Smennevir! No apology needed and much more has been made of this than is necessary. Hopefully this is the last reply in this posting.

It is a public forum, and as such you have every right to express your view on any subject related to the game, the gamers, and the forum itself. Courtesy demands (at least to me) that it be done in taste. To be honest, I find nothnig distasteful, though perhaps a little biting at times. But hey, that is what you do on a forum, isn't it?

I honestly think you stated your view. That does not make it a law. Others then stated their way of thinking. Still no law of the land has been established. It is indeed a subjective call. I take no offense at your feelings about this matter.

I think all of us have given our point of view, some pro, some contra. Nuff said.

We got better things to talk about...like SPWAW and enjoying the game and each other. And let me thank Alby again for trying to reach me and for working on revamping some of the material.

Sorry, Svennemir. I mispelled your name (I was close! ). It is a big handful of vowels and consonants in unusual order, at least for me, but I'll get it right next time.
