What are your TFs usually made of?

Pretty much wondering if the majority of you vets use large TFs for cargo shipping or if you use the single ship TFs. On top of that do you just compose your cargo TFs of only AKs or do you include some offensive ships as well. I'm a total newb if you hadn't guessed by the way.

I only play the AI. Against the AI, you can use only AKs in the back areas and get away with it. In PBEM this would probably get you spanked.

I do escort my convoys with at least one DD. A house rule I play by. If it is just one supply ship, I usually do not send escorts.

All troop convoys get escorted. If a lone ship, I would escort it but I never send troops in just one ship. Send at least one extra ship....the others can rescue survivors if anything happens. Easiest way to loose a ground unit is to have it's transport sink.

It is wise to have Allied AKs escorted with at least PG/PC, especially when IJN sub doctrine is on. IJ subs tend to attack warships first (as with their doctrine). Way better to lose PG (or even DD) than having AK with air group or ground unit sunk.

Always use escorted convoys, even if you think you're sure there are no Japanese submarines around. ALWAYS.

It depends, but I lean toward large well escorted cargo fleets. Its just easier to manage. However, I will mix in small or even single ship TFs and those may go unescorted.

I tend to use large supply depots and those have large TFs going in and out and from there I will send out small cargo groups to small bases. The more risky the operation the larger the escort.

No, I never mix in offensive ships for escort duty - they are too important and being used somewhere else. Even a bunch of MSW can stand off cruisers and protect the majority of your transport fleet while they get away.

Only invasion fleets will get DD escorts. All the rest get only auxiliaries.

Big TFs from main base(s) to hubs. Small TFs from hubs to outlying bases.

Huge TFs for Japanese oil/resource runs.

On the other hand, if you have to evacuate ships from places like Manilla, Singapore or Soerabaja early in the war, it's better to take your chances by sending them in ones or twos. Less chance they'll be detected and pulverised by our favourite ladies, Betty, Nel, Val and Kate...

Don't forget Helen and Sally. They do good work for me against AK/AP types in the DEI.

Between the US or Karachi and the main depot bases (Colombo/Trincomalee/Pearl Harbor/Pago Pago/Sydney/Brisbane/Perth) I will use unescorted TFs of up to ten large AKs or TKs. From those bases forward into more dangerous waters I will add escorts. For forward bases I will use smaller TFs (anywhere from one to five small AKs or TKs) that are always escorted. These TFs are coming from the main depot bases.

Troops convoys are always escorted by the appropriate ships (never use a ship as an escort if it is slower than the escorted ship!). I will make use of the Aquitania as a fast troopship with no other ships involved (except for a DD and old CL as escort - but no other APs in the TF), but not in an invasion TF. Her value is in getting a whole RCT from the US to a main depot base very quickly.

Ooo, better watch out. A couple of well placed torpedoes can lose you a whole RCT very quickly.
