CYCLONE!!!

I was in the 126 Infantry which was part of the 38th at the time and I wore a Presidential Unit Citation which I assumed was for action in the PI. My "uncle" (every male relative of my father is called uncle, I don't want to know why) was in the 126th INF when it was part of the 32nd Red Arrow Division, the division that saw the longest combat of any U.S. division in WW2, 654 days. He got all the breaks.

The 125th, 126th, 127th, and 128th were Michigan and Wisconsin National Guard units. They did well. Wish I knew more about the Presidential Unit Citation but nobody's talking.

Also was attached to the 107th Engineers. Lots of fun. Enjoy. I think of my service everytime I eat cold eggs.

I'm doing my best Don Rickles here seeing I've heard your basic requests for pizza and beer and VAF rights of passage.;..So, is this just a way to end up with a cheque every month or what? Hey, I'm a vet in Canada who expects zero. And I'm half deaf in the right ear with tinnitus.

Hi, You mean VFW right (not VAF because I've never heard of that)
I talk about beer and pizza more then I actually have beer and pizza. (although since I went back to work I usally have beer at home just no time to drink them)

I went into Guard for several reasons.
1. My country is in a war and I have a lot of training
2. I was close to retirement and could finish up
3. I missed being in the service.

Presently I spend most of my time at work or sleeping after work or doing online courses to learn new military skills. (plus I get retirement points for every 3 credit hours I complete. (I have completed 219 credit hours to date and several courses that do not count towards hours but contained usefull knowledge)
(pest mangement for example. But it did not mention anything about how to moderate the WITP forum)

Okay guys, I think that we need to start a letter writing campaign, pointing out that it is vital to the national defense thas Russ be given two hours a day to moderate the WITP forum. The big question, does it go to the Undersecretary of Defense or to the Senators from Ohio?

Hi, Went to Jan drill on 20th and 21st. Was issued my first complete set of uniforms. The new ACU. Only thing I didn't get yet were my name tags. Had a fun time as usal and an amazing event transpired.
I was walking down the hall when a SFC stopped me and aked me my name. I recognized him (but could not quite place from where). Turns out he was in my company at boot camp Great Lakes in 1981. Figure the odds. So I at least know one person in 1-148th . (He is in Alpha company)
I have another school to go to this summer. Warrior Leader training in July and Aug.

Hi.

Hope your successfull in picking up E7. The difference between E6 and E7 in the USN is HUGE. (Wearing Khaki versus dungarees... Elbow grease vs "supervisory"..) Is it just as huge in the Army?

Stay safe.

Hi, I spent 10 years in the Navy. (GMG1) So I know about khakis. E7 in Army is platoon sgt so it is alot different then the smaller ships. On large ships with large divisions E6 was (I hear) not the same as my being on FFG with just 2 o3 other gunnersmates.

Being recommended in National Guard does not mean you'll be promoted. There must be a vacent slot (billet) for the higher rank

Ok. My only USN experience is on the CV's.

E6's are plentiful, and can conseivably end up with little or no leadership responsibilities beyond Combined Federal Campaign Coordinator.

As an E5, I had no leadership responsibilities at all, and was out waxing the deck and shining knee-knockers along with all the other lowly peons.

I would have joined the military too, if it weren't of my fear of heights. I've never been able to overcome it.

Too bad there are no place for dedicated civilians in the military.

I'm a newcomer to the boards but I've been reading your stuff for years and I'm a former ARMY ROTC Brat now a civilian. I found out that the BEST people in the ARMY were the "high-ranking" Non-coms E-7's and up!
Cant believe they lowered the # of pushups from 40! I used to hate doing 40 pushups!

I can't remember what the push-up requirement in the Army was back in 1980. But I remember back in basic and A.I.T. at Ft. Benning they would dole out to us X amount of push-ups per letter received from home, at mail call. I remember one day being stuck with 250 push-ups to do before I could get up and leave the company area. It took me a while...and don't let your M-16 touch the ground in between.

The more I think about it, I believe the requirement was only 25 for a PT test though...not everybody weighed only 135 lbs!

Mog, good luck -

I joined in '82 and IIRC, 36 was the minimum for both push-ups and sit-ups in a 2 minute time period. I think 70+- was the max. The 2 mile run had to be done under 19 minutes with 13 minutes being max. I could be wrong about all of this...after all, I'm relying on memory here.

Is there a official requirement for those in US Military?

BTW, ever since my army time (20 years ago) I do my push-ups and sit-ups every single day... I can do 75 push-up in 2 minutes and over 100 sit-ups (without holding legs - legs are free, not bent and kept on surface ony by muscle force)...

IIRC, the Physical Fitness requirements are variable, based on the age group of the person being tested.

Yes they are, and as you get older, they cut you some serious slack. (Some need it more than others!)

Good luck and Godspeed Mog,

The security situation here is better than this time last year, and one would hope it stays this way for the duration of your tour.

Good luck with your upcoming deployment.  I was there in 2003, I am sure the facility setup is a lot better than it was four and a half years ago.

The APFT has changed standards since 1982.  They if anything have gotten harder.  18 years olds have to do 42 pushups, 40 year olds like me have to do 34.  I have over 18 minutes to do my 2 mile run (I think I could still pass that, well maybe not).  18 year olds have to do it in 15:54.  The other thing is body fat standards.  Kids are authorized only 20% while older pukes like me are authorized 26%.

I left with 21 years combined active duty and reserve time.  Was a senior Captain (O-3) when I left.  I am getting some interest from the Air Force Reserve as well as the Army Reserve.  They are getting critical in their numbers of critical care nurses and are dangling that oak leaf (major) in front of me.  I am considering it but my wife really doesn't want me to go back in.  Panama, Iraq, Korea, Iraq, she thinks that is enough.  I don't blame here but am still considering putting on the old pickle suit again.

The Air Force is looking better and better as far as reserve duty goes.  Deployments for Critical Care Air Transport teams are only three months right now which sounds better than the 18 months that activated Army Reservists are doing.  In addition, if I get activated as an Air Force Reservist most likely I will end up going to Iraq to work, not just sit as a backfill at some Army Hospital on the East Coast.

That isn't bad duty but I currently do that now as a DA civilian working at Madigan Army Medical Center here at Ft. Lewis WA.  It doesn't make sense for me to join the reserves, get activated and then go to Walter Reed when I am pretty much doing the same job here at Madigan.

Maybe this summer.  I need to get my fat arse into shape first.  Two years off from the military haven't been good to me.

Combined Federal Campaign Coordinator.

HA! I remember those days. Give anything...ANYTHING to make thier goal. They would grovel for $2 a month (I think that was the minimum you could give). Anything for that 100% participation mark.

"No thanks, but I appreciate your efforts." That was always my reply. Anything to keep them from meeting their goal.
