Update: CHS scenario version is now 2.07. See later post in this thread for fixes.

At long last, the next version of CHS is now available for download - CHS 2.01 (an update to 2.00 has already been uploaded).

CHS ("Combined Historical Scenario") is a scenario that is intended to provide a more accurate OOB and TO&E data set, along with some additional ships and aircraft.

The scenario comes in two parts - a "base" package and scenario files. The base package contains all of the scenario art and documentation (such as it is). The scenario files contain the scenario data. Note also that CHS is ONLY playable using my alternative WitP map (extended version).

The CHS components are available for download here:

CHS Download page.

NOTE: There is a serious fault in the base package - the Aptop.bmp (Allied plane tops) file is rotated for some reason, and does not work properly in the game. I have provided a corrected file on the above web page that must be downloaded and installed separately. A fixed "base" package will also be available soon.

This time round, there are a few different versios of the scenario, due to problems representing the Soviet Pacific Fleet, and to the addition of variants of the scenario with different air-to-air combat mods. The different variants available are:

  1. Soviet Navy variant. This variant is designed to be played by PBEM, or playing as the Allies against the Japanese AI. In this version, The Soviet fleet is present from the start of the scenario. This variant can ONLY be played if the Game Option "Automatic Submarine Options" ("Auto Sub Ops") is NOT used, as the AI cannot properly handle a Soviet fleet.

  2. No Soviet navy variant. This variant is designed to be played by PBEM, playing as the Allies against the Japanese AI or playing as the Japanese against the Allied AI. In this version, the Soviet fleet becomes available around the time of automatic Soviet activation (450801) and not before, even if the Soviets are attacked. Note: CHS is not really designed to be played with an Allied AI, due to difficulties that the AI has with some of the new island bases that have been added to the scenario.

  3. Modified A2A variant: This variant has modified scenario data similar to that used in the "Nik Mod" by Nikademus. Specifically, the following data changes are applied:

    * The endurance values of all aircraft are increased by 50%.
    * The effect rating of all AA/DP weapons has been increased by 50%.
    * The accuracy ratings of all air-to-air weapons has been decreased by 50%.
    * The maximum speed value range has been compressed by halving the difference between actual aircraft max speed and a centre point of 350 MPH.

  4. Experimental A2A variant: This variant has modified scenario data similar to that used in the "Nik Mod" by Nikademus, but with some additional changes. Specifically, the following data changes are applied:

    * The starting experience values of all Allied pilots has been decreased by 10%, except for USN pilots.
    * The starting experience values of all USN and Japanese pilots has been decreased by 5%.
    * The Zero bonus has been removed (this is compensated for by the larger reduction in Allied pilot experience).

This variant is UNTESTED and EXPERIMENTAL. use at your own risk! This variant may also change, depending on the success, or otherwise, of these modifications.

Scenarios are available with a combination of these variants. See the CHS web page for details.

Many many thanks to all who have contriuted to CHS development, past and present. The scenario owes its existence to them.

Extra thanks to Spooky for hosting the base package file(s).

Many thanks to all involved. Maybe now I can get back to playing this great game.

Of course you would announce this just when I am in the middle of downloading CotA.

I have just noticed some problems with the Soviet fleet in the variants with that fleet present. Some ships that should start in play do not, and a couple that should not (i.e. the CAs!) do. I will fix this ASAP.

I also need to check Japanese aircraft upgrade paths as there may be a problem or two lurking there as well.

If anyone else finds any problems, please let me know.

Andrew

There looks to be a big problem (another one) with the Soviet fleet. I noticed a message in the WitP Support forum that ships cannot refuel from Soviet ports even when the Soviets are active. I have to admit that this is someting I didn't test. All of the testing I did with the Soviet fleet was with them not activated - to see how they would behave while the SU was neutral (answer - not very well).

I just did a quick test and I think that other poster ("Yuri") is right. Ships, even Soviet ones, cannot refuel from Soviet ports even after the Soviets are activated. I think this is a bug, as I remember that in the early days of WitP Allied subs could refuel at Vladivostok, which was a huge loophole in the game, and this was plugged by the designers. It looks like they may have made that "plug" so big that it prevents ALL refuelling from Soviet ports for the entire game. And I won't be holding my breath waiting for this bug to be fixed.

Oh well, the Soviet fleet appears to be a "one shot" wonder. I can leave the Soviet fleet variant there for the sake of curiosity, but the fleet will not be all that useful!

Damn! it sucks to see that after so much work you've done on the soviet fleet OOB and to include it into CHS 2.0, most of it will be gone because this issue (until august 1945, that is).

Hope you find some way to fix it :).

I could be wrong, but I think this problem may still be present after August 1945 as well.

Is it best to do a second install for this game??
If so, anything I need to know before doing so?? Not the "most" gifted with software.

I notice that Aden receives just 1000 tons of supply per day, and 2-3 other locations in India receive about 200 tons each per day. There is also not much fuel arriving at Aden. Will this cause a significant shortage of supplies/fuel or is this the design? I did not notice disabled supply/oil centers during my quick scan of the area.

I'm finally going to convert the CHS to a non respawn version based on 2.0. I'll send it to Andrew after I've completed it for verification and adoption.

Umph, a non respawn version certainly is a excellent idea. But are you sure that it will work? I assume that you'll simply fill all slots of the ship database to achieve the desired non respawn result, but it seems that there're many hidden thingys in the code.

I think you may have picked up another major stuff-up on my part. I removed the Middle East base, and transferred the resource production to Aden, but it is not in the current scenario. I "lost" a couple of other changes a few weeks ago - probably due to a mix up with my copies of the sceanrio draft, and this looks like another one. The result is a short-changing of the British as far as resources and oil is concerned. I will be updating the scenario in the next day or two so I will fix this as well.

I should warn people that these sort of stuff-ups also occurred in the first releases of previous versions of CHS. They are probably inevitable given the amount of work put in. I would suggest holding off starting any major campaign games for a week or so until the most obvious of such problems get ironed out.

Scenerio 159 which I am looking at also allows the Allied player to move his units prior to the opening moves of the Japanese on 7 Dec 1941, i.e. the game starts with the Allied player making his turn and then the Japanese (AI in my case). As an Allied player I certainly like that ability, however I do feel that not only will I abuse this, but sadly there may be others who would as well. My doing so is not a problem, it is the others that greatly concern me and I do not want to contribute to the delinquency of those "others".

Most scenarios start with this setup.
The abuse would be not including it, and allowing the IJN to target at sea TF's.

CHS is now at version 2.02.

Here is the list of fixes:

  1. Aden did not have the resources and oil centres, and additional daily fuel and supplies, that were removed when the Middle East base was removed. That had now been fixed - Aden now has the combined oil. resources, fuel and supplies from the former Aden and Middle East bases.
  2. Many Chinese LCUs had incorrect planning targets. Some Soviet LCUs and a few other Allied LCUs were also affected. All Allied LCUs have now had their planning targets set correctly (this was a product of the same WitP editor "effect" that also affected some Japanese LCUs, which was already corrected).
  3. The following LCUs have had their Arrival dates changed to 0 (were in the range 411201 to 411207):
    Slot
    Unit
    3085 9th RDH Cavalry
    144 222 Group RAF
    1740 1st Man. Dist. Army
    1741 2nd Man. Dist. Army
    1744 3rd Man. Dist. Army
    1749 4th Man. Dist. Army
    1750 5th Man. Dist Army
    2896 11th US CBT
    2672 73rd US
    2674 82nd US
    2677 83rd US
  4. The "2nd Marine Para" LCU has had its arrival date changed from 411208 to 411209, so that it will arrive on map.
  5. A number of Soviet ships had incorrect arrival dates in both the "Soviet Fleet" and "No Soviet Fleet" scenarios. All have now been fixed.
  6. The Liberator VI endurance is now the same as the B-24J - 835.

The scenario is available for download from my CHS web page (link in top post).

I reckon you are right, Halsey. I just fired up the stock scenerio 15 as well as the new CHS 2.02 scenerio 159 playing 1.800.1 with the Japanese set as the computer player and myself as the Allied player. In both cases I am able to get in the first move on 7 December. I can form up the battle line at Pearl Harbor and sail them out of harm's way. Just did so in stock...moved all the capital ships and some DD escorts out of Pearl to the south. I can do so many more things to protect the allies on their 7 December turn that I just just very surprised I never remembered doing it before. It always seemed like the Allies never before "got" a turn on 7 December....that their turns began on 8 December 1941. Always remembered the Japanese got first crack at the Allies.....Day of Infamy and all that. Just tried my 3.00 version of RHS and the Allies do not get a move on 7 Dec 1941....the scenerio loads and the game takes off the with Japanese assault. My Iron Storn install works as RHS.

But then I do have five installs of WITP. If Halsey is right then everything is well and fine except for my RHS and Iron Storm. Just need to figure out what to do to get this 7 December 1941 turn that I seem to be missing in them. But then again, I could have buggered up the installs. Did my memory really fail this bad on me???

There is an "Historical First Turn" option on the Realism Options menu. If this is set to "No" the allies get a move before the December 7th turn. If set to "Yes" they do not and just sit and take it the first day.

Everytime I change this setting for testing I forget to change it back, so the next time I start the game it goes joyfully off and starts without me.

I just updated the scenarios to 2.02 and was looking at supply at various bases. In scen 150, San Fran get only 2200 supply per day and 2000 fuel. Is that correct?? It seems very low to me. In the stock game it is 25,000 supply. A decrease of 90% seems very high.

When I play Dec7 41 start, I tend to always play with Historical First Turn option ON. This basically does not allow Allies a first turn.

I just updated the scenarios to 2.02 and was looking at supply at various bases. In scen 150, San Fran get only 2200 supply per day and 2000 fuel. Is that correct?? It seems very low to me. In the stock game it is 25,000 supply. A decrease of 90% seems very high.

Take a look at the "United States" base.

The US economy overall should be similar to that in the stock scenarios. Actually it is about 30-40% smaller, but can be built up to a higher level by repairing all of the damaged resource centres at US bases (which takes 2 or so years). This is explained in the documentation somewhere.

I also just noticed that the "United States" base somehow inherited 10,000 HI! I think an extra zero got in there - should be 1,000. That is more a minor annoyance rather than a major bug as the USA is intended to have more HI than resources, but no that much more! This is the first fix for 2.03 it seems.
