Im playing the October Surprize scenario with some changes in the events and time frame. Hope to keep it very detailed and provide a good AAR.

I have changed little else to the scenario. So most should be same settings others have.

Story

August 23 2006. Meeting in Baghdad.

New leader of Al Queda in Iraq Al-Masri with messenger from AL Zawahiri in Afganistan

"Blessings and peace upon those who carry the swords and the burdens of Islam in the name of the Righteous in the name of Mohammid PBUH"

"To the new Caliph of Iraq I give thanks for the struggle but since the death of Zarqawi in June the Cross Worshippers have been increasing the war on Islam. We need actions now or there will be no Future"

AL Zawahiri sends this plan for all the forces of Islam in Iraq. A new day is to dawn. We now seek a turn in the war.

The plan will set out enemies both Muslim and Infidel against each other. We will have them at each others throats and that will lead us to Victory in the name of the Prophet PBUH.

The time to strike is now. But our target must be one of significance to change the war into our favor.

This message reveils your new Target......

January 23 2007 US Command Greenzone in Baghdad.

US Command in Iraq Multi National forces. Press Breifing

General George Casey

"In the past 8 months of action we have seen a gradual reduction in the attacks in IRaq. Al Queda is decimated and on the retreat. The iraqis Sunnis seem more willing to deal with the new Government. And Sectarian Violence is on the decline"

Reporter " General do you see any chance of Al Queda making a serious Come back in Iraq ?"

General Casey "In answer to your question there is always a chance that Al Queda will launch attacks. They were able to attack mainland US remember ? Iraq is still a target to them and there are signs that they wish to cintinue the Struggle here"

Reporter " What do you think Al Queda plans next ?"

General Casey "Difficult to say. They clearly are not winning the war militarily they only chance for victory is to widen the war. It will take something on the scale of 911 to dramatically change the fortunes of AL Queda in Iraq. They are still however capible of a lot of Mischeif. "

US Greenzone Iraq. Military press Breifing

General George Casey

"We have investigated the Camoflauge that was taken off the dead in fallujah. It matches uniforms stolen from an Iraqi army base last year. There is no evidence of US involvment in the attack on the Mosque"

Reporter "Then why General are Shiia Clerics and the Iranian leaderhip calling for attacks on the US and its allies for the deathof Al Sadr ?"

General Casey "We believe that the attack was instigated by Al Queda and carried out by them. All of the attackers are Middle Eastern and clearly not US Marines. But we see some using this as anti US propaganda.

Reporter "What about calls in Iran for the US to immediately withdrawl or face Iranian "Justice" ?

General Casey "We have seen a rise in attacks in Iraq in receint days. It clearly is being used as a propaganda tool. As for Iran we have prepared our defenses and will watch the border closely. We have seen evidence of Insurgents getting more aid from the IRanian border.

Office of the President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Talking to the Iranian Parliment

"The hour of Iran has come. We have prepared for this day. America's role in the attack on Al Sadr shows the world that America can not be trusted."

"Already our plans go forward. We have anaged to get aid to our Shiia brethern in Iraq. We have also formed an alliance with AL Queda in the hopes of driving the great Satan out of Iraq."

"But our first major overt strike will be against the Zionist entity. That will be in a few months as we are close to acheiving our goal of acquiring "Special" weapons to prevent any attack on our homeland."

"Until then we will aid the Muhajadeen. We also have convinced some Muslim naitons to aid us. We now have Spare parts for some of the American equiptment left over from the time of the Shah. And we have purchased alot of Russian Equiptment."

"For now the battle will be taken to the Americans by the Insurgensts of Iraq. And we will aid them".

Iraq

News reporter "The situation in Iraq has again broken into all out warfare. The Insurgency that was nearly defeated has been revived by the aid that Iran seems to be giving the Insurgencts. But While attacks have increases the Pentagon is perplexed as to why there has been no major escalation of warfare with the Insurgents. Attacks have been sporatic and there are signs that the Insurgents are better armed. Yet they have made little effort to leave their controlled areas. "

"The Military continues to monitor the situation and wonder what their next move is"

Morning of October 10th 2007

Somewhere in Iran

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sat contemplating what this hour meant. Things were in place. The blow to remove the US from Iraq would fall. But it was the hated Zionists who would get the biggest shot of the Day.

The Iranian President leaned forward. He spoke softly into the speaker for the telephone.

"Launch the missile. It Should hit tel Aviv in 8 hours. Allah Bless the Iranian Nation"

Reporter on CNN "Word has just reached us of a Missile strike that hit the town of Haifa near the coast. Early Reports are that a series of Missile Launches left Iran headed for ISrael. Many of the Missiles were either intercepted by Patriots in IRaq or by ISraeli Missiles here. There is word however of a Gas attack in Haifa due to an errant missile. ISrael authorites confirm that Nerve Gas has been verified in the attack"

There are two seperate strategies for the Insurgent/Iran side. Obviously Insurgents and Iranians.

Al Queda and Iraqi Insurgents

This consists of two plans. Large Insurgent groups will hunker down against the Superior Coalition firepower. Moving too many insurgents under the US air umbrella is too dangerous. The larger groups seek to hid in neighborhoods and hold key city blocks

Smaller more moble Insurgent forces will fan out into the streets seeking to hit and run or capture key areas.

The whole strategy is to have the main insurguent forces tie down the Coalition forces while the Iranian Army moves forward. If the Coalition leaves areas vulnerable then go on the offensive. Keeping Iraq Chaotic is their main mission.

The Iranian Army's goal is clear. To move into Iraq and suppliment the terrorist forces. They hope to combine their firepower with the Insurgents forces to cause heavy casualties.

The Iranian armies main challenge is to survive the US air attacks that will occur. Lossies are expected to be heavy moving into Iraq.

The Iranians hope to move into southern Iraq and cut the US troops off from their main suppy port in Kuwait.

They intend to hit the Multination troops and the Brits in Basra the hardest.

Veeery cool start to your AAR, William. Could you perhaps go into more specifics about what you've changed in the original scenario, aside from the date?

Well I changed alot of events. Too many of them seem to favor the Insurgents.

When there is 100% chances of US ships being sunk, terrorist bombings in the US and martial law being declaired in the US felt the events were too unbalanced. The US is too far away to effect events here. VPs should be the decider.

That and Israel was such a big part of the orignal story yet plays no role in the game so shifted the emphasis to the Iranians as the aggressors.

Checked the colors of some units. Mostly to what I prefer.

Started out turning off most Iranian and US planes on auto attacks. Like to plan attacks myself (I dont use Interdiction I just chose my own targets)

Put most MP Coalition Units and Engineer units in defense mode. Sort of setting up roadblocks.

I had to restart my game again but kept the story. Was just that I didnt notice that the original had US and Iranian planes reinforcements coming in in ATTACK mode. Prefer to set up the attacks myself so had to re edit.

Also changed the color for the Bulgarian army units as I had them the same as the Italians.

Have next update due out soon. Restart has gone well. Is a low intenstity conflict and my AAR will read as such for battles between insurgents and Coalition.

AH I see. Didnt know that. What I get for not reading all of the info.

I understand why the creator of the original scenario did what he did. Is also the "Roadside bombs" that he used recoiless rifles for the effects of the bombs.

Hmm should I tell the story as bombs going off or keep the morter angle?

Any input ?

I think you should definitely use the suicide bomber/roadside bomb angle. That's the realistic view, more's the pity...

Yeah thought about it and it will make for a more effective AAR. Is much more dramatic to report about sucide bomber attacks than simple morter attacks.

Changing the back posts to update to this.

Change of pace here

-------------------------------------------------

British zone Basra. 3 PM Oct 10th 2007

In a small dingy house was a meeting between an Iranian Officer and members of Ansar Al Islam. Outside watching the meeting were members of that group.

"Hassiem I do not trust this Iranian." spoke one insurgent

"It is Allah's will. The Iranian is promising us much support today." replied another.

The first spoke. "And what support can those far away in Iran give us today ?"

The reply came. "He says watch the sky. Fire will come from the north."

In downtown

On the Euphrates river in downtown Basra the bridge was guarded by TF Rake. A contingent of New Zealander Engineers.

Lt Reginald McGrew was leading an inspection of the bridge. His group of New Zealander Engineers were charged with fixing and defending the nearby bridge over the Euphrates.

As he inspected the bridge Lt McGrew heard small arms fire erupt from downtown Basra. He knew there was a nearby company sized contingent of the new Iraqi Army.

A firefight had broken out between the Iraqi army and a group of about 90 insurgents. The Insurgents were firing 82mm Morter fire into that area of Basra.

Lt McGrew order his troops to man thier posts. Small arms fire started to strike the New Zealander postions.

Frantic calls for help started to come into the Engineers command post from the Iraqi troops. Lt McGrew started to form up a team to go to help them when a load explosion hit the east side of the Euphrates.

"What happened over there ?" McGrew asked a nearby engineer pointing to the smoke rising out to the east.

"Thought it might have been a car bomb but it was very sudden. the trooper replied. "Wait what is that sou...."

Small dark objects filled the sky from the east. They were incoming Scud missiles fired from miles away in Iran. They were directed by and Iranian forward observer working along side the Iraqis.

"Get under cover men !" Yelled McGrew as explosions rocked the area from the missiles. About 2 dozen scuds hit the area doing damage but no casualties.

The firefight between the Iraqi Army unit and the insurgents grew less and less. Finally a voice raised up calling out to the New Zealanders in broken English..

" Lay down your arms ! The Iraqi collaborators have surrendered ! You Brits dont stand a chance !"

A voice from one of the New Zealanders rose up in challenge. "We're not Brits you bloody Twit ! At least know its the Zealanders who are kicking your arse !"

The terrorists sprayed the Engineer's position with automatic fire. The Engineers replied by shooting at terrorist's positions. they used their prime mover to block the road to the bridge.

By nightfall the firing stoped. The terrorist went into hiding leaving the Zealanders stubbornly holding on to the bridge.

In the end 18 terrorists were believed killed in the days firefight. 105 Iraqi Army soldiers had been killed or captured. The Zealanders lost only one armored jeep.

Umm....aren't Scuds going to be coming in with supersonic velocity? Like about mach 4? You aren't going to hear them until they've already hit and something travelling about 1200 metres per second and diving near vertically is unlikely to be seen either.

Still...cracking AAR! Keep up the good work.

Cheers, Neilster
