Hi friends!

I'm playing a scenario on the american side from the Coral Sea battles to the end of the war.
I ordered the Enterprise hellcat squadron to Long range cap on a TF transporting the First marine division.
When the japs air-attacked the TF the message on the map screen before the combat listed 5 hellcats on cap but...
at the end of the combat the report showed an american loss of 20 (twenty!) aircraft!
at the end of the turn I opened the Enterprise screen... and effectively I had only 5 hellcraft left on her (the squadron was of roughly 30) !
Why they did non participate in the combat? They died without fighting...

thanks

Were the 20+ F6F's actually lost (i.e. destroyed), or just being repaired? Also, how long did they have to fly to get to their LRCAP station? The longer you let them fly, the more ops losses (i.e. non-combat related losses) they'll take.

well,

they were destroyed and they had to travel maximum 4-5 hexs

isn't the first time that I note that the number of the aircraft on the map screen don't match the number on the battle screen...

thanks

Well, this always happens. I assume you're playing with FoW on? That means you can never entirely trust the combat animations, because both players in a PBEM must watch it, and the game doesn't present a sanitised version for games vs. the AI.

It does seem like a lot... I assume that the turn in question is sometime back now, but you can always check your air loss report for the previous turn and see exactly what caused your Hellcats to go POOF.

ehm no, I haven't the report anymore. 'cause enraged with the unjustifiable losses and with the Enterprise litterally stripped of her cap, after two or three turns I decided to pick the last savegame available and restart from there

if it will happen again I'll go to search in combat reports as you suggest and I'll report back.
thanks!

I think Japanese got lucky. But I think Carrier-based LRCAP is more dangerous to planes than land-based, IMHO. They, after all, have to find back and land back to your carrier... And LRCAP can be costly with Ops losses anyway. Next time check it they were A2A or Ops losses. Maybe most of them didn't find back to carrier and ditched to sea.

Combat Losses
You need to look at the intel screen to see how many aircraft you really lost, the combat reports are always incorrect due to FOW (fog of war). First reports in battle are almost always bogus. Pilots always claim more kills that what really happened. Just read history, Germany claimed more kills than all of the aircraft the Brits had.

Op Losses
You need to check the Experince, Morale, and fatiuge of your air groups.

Low Experince will have higher op losses when traveling longer distances.

Higher Fatigue will increase op losses.
LR Cap uses all of the pilots and aircraft, keeping an airgroup at LR Cap for any lenght of time will wear out pilots and aircraft.

In Iraq we have lost more helos and aircraft to Operational losses then combat. Bad weather, worn out pilots and aircraft, part shortages take their toll.

ok, surely you're right..
I'll check operational losses every turn in future.
For certain a combo operation with surface fleets and landing forces is really a dangerous thing... even if you have CV to protect them.

the next time I'll do like the japs against me: 10 CV and CVL to escort the landings in buna & gili gili !
.. but I have to build them first

thanks guys!
