A semicomatose man in a US Navy uniform is lying on the deck of LCT-326. The craft is no. 7 in one of 3 long lines of LCT's trailing behind an AVD and 2 AK's. The force is headed North toward Moratai.

Sailor: ENSIGN SHULER! He's singing again. I think it's Kraut..or maybe Dutch.

Cpt. de Baen, KNIL: <the Cpt. is CO of a recon coy. He kneels next to the semicomatose man and listens intently. He stands suddenly> It is the Panzerlied! This man is a spy. I shall have him shot, presently. <motions toward some of his men who quicly grasp the striken man under the arms and begin to lift him>


Ensign Harvey A. Shuler, USN, skipper of LCT-326: <Steps briskly between the KNIL Cpt and the semi-comatose man> OH NO YOU DON'T. Nobody is going to execute a man in US Navy uniform on my ship without a trial and he can't stand trial until he can defend himself.


Cpt. de Baen, KNIL: <despite his rank advantage he realizes the Ensign is in command aboard ship. The two men stare at each other for a good 20 seconds> As you wish.


Whew...that was close. I found Admiral Draemel as "task force commander" for a bunch of LCT's. You would think he might have been aboard the AVD....but hey...who am I to question.

I can think of at least 4 people very happy about this development, the CO of Exeter, the CO of the AVD, Mrs. Draemel and Ensign Harvey A. Shuler, who will be invited to every party the Draemel's ever throw. And there will be plenty of schnaps too.


PS., Ensign Harvey A. Shuler, USN really did command LCT-326. Maybe that could be changed in AE.

Status: offline 		The Allies launch a total of 3 strikes from Menado and Babo. With that many carriers, the CAP is expected to be fierce. It was.

The Jap carriers are parked off Sansapor presumably to block Allied moves to reinforce Sansapor or Menado. They also take this opportunity to send reinforcements to Davao (Mindanao). Hyuga and her friends have disappeared. Perhaps they got cold feet after one of the DD's was hit heavily. It looks like the bombardment runs on Sansapor are over. The USAAF support unit is safely ashore.

Planned transfers of engineers from Kai to Amboina are put on hold until the carriers leave.

Hollandia falls to the Allies.

Awww shucks..that tweren't me..'twas Ensign Shuler. I still don't know how the great hand of 1943(b) fate deemed Herr Admiral should be transferred from HMS Exeter to LCT-326 but I am pretty sure it happened when all those ships were swirling about near Kai.

The Jap carriers and surface groups appear to be retreating up the East coast of the Philippines. As Palau is now being routinely scouted by Coronados from Morotai, it is not a suitable basing option if surprise is to be achieved. Similarly, the approaches to the battle area from Truk are now partly observed with a new RCAF Mariner group at Hollandia. The carriers likely need fuel and could be back soon. Time for Operation Anaconda to begin in the small window available.

This will consist of an air campaign to reduce the airfield at Davao, followed quickly by the seizure of Jolo then a landing at Cotobato in Western Mindanao. A possbile seizure of Jesselton on the North coast of Borneo is also considered. This would be an ideal location for recon aircraft and bombers to shut off movement in the Eastern portion of the South China Sea. Transports will have to move up under the narrow air umbrella of Kai/Namlea/Menado as Kendari and Makassar are still potent threats.

All of the SWPac P-38's (now dwindled to less than 50) have been moved to Menado. When all is ready they can sweep over Davao, clearing the way for the B-25's at Menado and the Heavies from Amboina. The airfield at Amboina is still beat up so some engineers will be shipped up from Kai even if the sea mines are not all cleared.

An Aussie Cav Div is aboard transports at Namlea and will make the run to Menado on the 30th. The 12th Australian Inf Brigade is about 3 days away from Menado. The 6th and 7th Divisions are a week away as are two Armoured Regts.

There are 44 LCT's in good repair at Menado, not enough for the Cav Div or 12th Inf but enough for the Dutch infantry at Menado. They will likely take Jolo as I believe it to be ungarrisoned.

As usual, there is not enough of anything...supplies, fuel, AP's, AK's, long range fighters. P-38's and C-47's will fly down from SE Asia as they are now in range to Menado.

The target date for the seizure of Cotobato is June 14, but this might have to slip if the carriers come back.

Status: offline 		So I am driving in to work on the toll road the other day and it is just a spectaculary-beautiful-thank-God-I-am-alive kind of day. 72 degrees at 08:00, turqoise blue sky, can clearly see all the tall buidling in downtown LA, the ships queued up outside of Long Beach and even way North of the Santa Monica Mountains perhaps 100 miles away, purple ridges receding into infinity. The sunroof is down, Allison Krause and Robert Plant on the CD. I can smell eucalyptus and orange blossoms. It was dangerously close to a religious experience. Then I come around a bend and the soil and wild grass center divider has come alive seemingly overnight with millions of lupines in a dense carpet 30-40 yds wide that literally goes on for miles. It was astonishingly beautiful. At least as dense as the lupines in this picture.




Then I passed a toll station and here is this big tractor with a commerical mower chopping the poor things down to the bare ground. Thanks for that Caltrans. I blame the idiot in the tractor. I would have faked a mechanical malfunction before I did something like that. They coudln't wait 2 weeks? You know if the lupines were that good there were millions of California poppies ready to bloom too. What a bunch of chowderheads.

Mandrake, Caltrans is just doing what it always does: saving us citizens from ourselves. You and I selfishly want to enjoy a natural vista of peaceful spring native flora. What fools we are! But thank goodness Caltrans knows the ugly truth: those lupines are actually the scourge of all mankind!

They are sucking precious carbon dioxide out of the air, and sequestering it into plant material. Ergo, the lupines grow and spread, the CO2 level in the atmosphere decreases, the atmosphere cools, AND SOON WE ALL DIE FROM GLOBAL COOLING! ( Hey, look it up: Hanson and Gore's Textbook of Climate Theory with Modern Slide Rule Modeling, v. 1942b, published by the M&M Enterprises Scientific Textbook Division.)

So Caltrans does the only thing they can do to save a dying planet: kill those evil CO2-sequestering plants. Incidentally, that's also why they are always tearing up perfectly functional roads and causing construction-related traffic jams: cars stuck idling for hours put a lot more CO2 back into the air than if they were sailing down the highway in a smooth, fast and above all quick 70 MPH commute.

You just don't appreciate how much more your government knows than we do!

Status: offline 		A group of heavily escorted transports are headed SE in the Gulf of Davao. Is this an invasion force for Menado? Reinforcements for Davao or Jolo?

As this group was felt to be transport-heavy, the NEIAF and RAAF B-25's at Menado were ordered to attack on the deck and try out the new skip-bombing. Instead, they met a wall of flack from veteran Jap DD's and crusiers. This proved bad for morale. Two beat up squadrons will move back to Kai and that surly USAAG B-25 group (you know the one) will be brought up from Babo. A KNIL Bn is already headed for Jolo....as apparently is a Jap transport force. 6th Aus Cav Div has just arrived at Menado and will try to unload before the bad guys arrive. Prince of Wales and friends are ordered up from Kai, but will have to brave the threat of air attack from Makassar. 6th and 7th Aus. Div and support troops are one their way to Mendao and will arrive in 2-3 d.

The Jap carries are loitering or refueling to the NE and could cause havoc should they sprint back down.

A big bomber raid directed at Davao from Amboina is quite effective
but there is insufficient support infrastructure to support a logn camapaign.

I'm sure I recall an old research paper from an M&M scientist about building giant CVs from ice. Global cooling will make the raw material more accessible would it not?

That is a quite novel idea......I mean the part about the scientist working for M&M Enterprises, Climate Change Divisison.


One should be cautious...nothing is at it seems in 1943(b).

Hotchi Mama! That Tomini Ice Shelf looks like it's just about to break loose and start floating north!

Just think: a perfectly flat mobile slab of ice 10 miles long by 7 miles wide: Room enough to put fifteen parallel 25,000 foot long runways side by side to create an unsinkable "level 23 airfield!" (Not to mention containing a virtually limitless supply of "rocks" for Scotch on the Rocks to calm the nerves of the junior officers). Strong enough to take about 1,000 simultaneous torpedo hits and still have floatation damage of only 0.00023%! Add a bunch of VFs, B-29s, P-38s, and voila: you have yourself a real "DeathStar."

Lease a few M&M Enterprises combo tugs and icebreakers from the Peruvian Navy and you could easily push that puppy all the way into Tokyo Bay.

And Perimeter Defense: Not to worry! Leave that to the polar bears on the edge of the shelf. A couple batallions of IJN SNLF Marines land; the bears have lunch!

Mandrake, I think I'd be landing an aviation support batallion on your new CVI ("I" for ice shelf) ASAP.

For something completely different, Lunga fell yesterday in a one day assualt; as the IJA 36th Division retreated to Tassaforanga in the face of the 43rd and Americal Divisions attack. Casualties are light; except the airfield, where more than 10 Taro plants were lost.

Huzzah! The part about the Jap 36th Division...not the airfield. The destruction of the Taro plants was a senseless act. The WAFFL Commission (Wanton Attacks on Fruits, Flowering (Plants) and Legumes) will hear of this. When this thing is over...a price will be paid. You can count on that.

PS..isn't that officer British? What is he doing with y'all? Fix his stupid IBM card and send him back please.

Status: offline 		Remember those "well-escorted transports" SE of Davao? Well, it seems the information was faulty. They proved to be 3 Jap surface groups with at least 2 BB's, 4 CA's and 3 CL's plus nearly 20 DD's and they paid a visit to Menado on the night of the 30/31.

My replay was out of sync. On my replay 5 DD's were sunk. In "reality" only one was sunk but it coudl have been much worse for the Allies. The airfield was barely scratched and the Aussie Cav Div transports escaped harm.

Prince of Wales (from 250 miles away) might have scared away Hyuga which never took part in the battle. Nice show by the USN Pompano and PT's which drove off the Takao group and the Aussie CD guns which drove off Mutsu's escorts.
