This really happend (in May '42, historically). Mr. Jones committed suicide rather than be taken alive. Mrs. Jones and the Aleuts were taken to a POW camp in Hokkaido where 1/3 died. I could be wrong, but I don't think they were treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention.

Interesting that you brought that up. It turns out that Sopporo, in 1942, was the sister city of Detroit and the music scene there had adopted a blues sensibility which presaged the Motown sound.

Clearly a reference to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks. Major Matsumoto, who had a family in Nagoya, realized "the thing wouldn't be goin on" much longer.

The Geneva Convention only applied to prisoner of war, not civilian internees like Ms Jones and the Aleuts living in Attu.

Japan repeatly during the war moved entire island populations to camp thousand of miles away, also in Southern Pacific. Resident of Nauru and Gilberts had a comparable mortality rate during the war (not linked to Allied bombings).

Another example of the treatment of civilian prisoners was in Wake, where hundred of American civilian airfield builders were captured. While a part was shipped to Japan where it shared the fate of other Allied prisoners, more than 100 remained on the island until October 1943 and a raid by US CV, then were all executed in reprisals.

On October 5, 1943, carrier planes from USS Yorktown conducted an extremely successful raid. Two days later, fearing an imminent invasion, Rear Admiral Shigematsu Sakaibara ordered the execution of 98 captured American contract workers remaining on the island who had been doing forced labor for the Japanese. They were taken to the northern end of the island, blindfolded and machine-gunned. One of the prisoners (whose name has never been discovered) escaped the massacre, apparently returning to the site to carve the message 98 US PW 5-10-43 on a large coral rock near where the murdered Americans had been hastily buried in a mass grave. This unknown American was re-captured within a few weeks, after which Sakaibara personally beheaded him with a sword. The inscription on the rock can still be seen and is a Wake Island landmark. After the war, Sakaibara and his subordinate, Lieutenant-Commander Tachibana, were sentenced to death for this and other crimes (several Japanese officers in American custody had committed suicide over the incident, leaving written statements that incriminated Sakaibara). Tachibana's sentence was later commuted to life in prison.[2] The Murdered civilian Pows are buried in Honolulu Memorial, Hawaii

On September 4, 1945, the remaining Japanese garrison surrendered to a detachment of the United States Marine Corps. In a brief ceremony, the handover of Wake was officially conducted.

Reminds me how they recently held a mock trial in Japan (Todai University IIRC)...and convicted Truman for war crimes for Hiroshima and Nagasaki...in absentia it seems.

The Beauforts, Swordfish and Dutch torpedo bombers in the DEI are gaining enough experience to be a real threat against surface forces.
They are murder against transports. The battle for Koepang ahs consumed so many Jap surface resources that the Bali landing goes in without sufficient support. This was one of John's few mistakes.

Bali falls because there is no garrison, but AV support troops are either drowned or sent packing back to Borneo. Bali will not be of any use for now.

The departure of the AP's and AK's from Soerabaja has been delayed too long. I had hoped to use them in a Singapore rescue operation. They may still be of value in evacuation the Aussie brigade remnants and Malaya Command from Tjiltjap should they still be floating upon their arrival.

AVG transferred to Java to aid in a planned air offensive on Palembang. The Japs didn't wait.

China got a Squadron of P-40E's from the PI. The Volunteers didn't seem to mind.

My apologies. In fact, Attu didn't change sides until the next day. :-)

Like the rest of her ersatz infantry squad, Mrs Jones was equiped with a hunting rifle, a machete used to butcher whales and several dozen rounds of ammunition. She signaled to Sleeping Bear, the best shot in the group, making the outline of an officer's insingia on her forehead and shoulders then a decisve slashing motion across her neck. Sleeping Bear removed the glove from his right hand, shouldered the butt of his rifle, took one deep breath, then another, then he seemed to enter a state of torper which was interrupted only when his rifle jerked violently and the quiet of the winter evening was ended by the crack of a thirty-ought-six round as it lept toward it's target.........

There really was a USN weather detachment on Kiska when the Japs arrived in June 42. 10 men and a dog were captured. One sailor managed to elude capture for 50 days. He turned himself in because of starvation.

Captain Marleybone: "Well sir, the level of detail about Royal Navy postions and intentions is alarming. For eg., decrypt number 12 has exact positions, course and speed for Rodney and Ark Royal."
